    AIX forum

Many thanks to all those who have registered so far. Let’s all start using the forums, share news, pictures and information, ask questions etc. This can be an excellent source of research and reference IF we all use it.

Thanks again and thanks to the mods.

Any chance of a “sticky” for a few days!!

Not an uncommon practice to be returning former airfields to their original use – part of the recycled concrete runways from Bircotes [RAF Worksop??] were crushed and used as hardcore for the approach routes to Newark’s second hangar.

    Hi TwinOtter

RAF Bircotes and RAF Worksop are two different airfields. Bircotes was a small grass surfaced field just outside Bawtry. Worksop is near Scofton, to the east of Worksop. Indeed most of the concrete from the runways has now gone. Have a look at RAF Worksop on my website which shows the main runway extant, and later the remains, here

Some of Bircotes can be seen here

    Gingie

A few words about Gingie! I’ve been researching airfields for a number of years now. I usually visit and research with Chris Percy – cdp206 on here who has the Airfield Archaeology website http://www.airfieldarchaeology.fotopic.net/

We’ve also done a bit of bit of “work” with Richard Flagg – REF on here he has the airfields and aviation memorials website http://www.airfields.fotopic.net/ my website is Old Airfields http://www.oldairfields.fotopic.net

Chris and myself have had a book published, given academic presentations, conducted tours and many other airfield related activities.

It was through my website that I first met Gingie, or Jerry to give his name. He wanted to know if we could meet him for a days exploring, something he was just starting to get into. We met him at North Witham (with his very well behaved and genuinely interested son, Jakob) we “did” North Witham and Saltby.

Chris and myself, and indeed Richard have always practised seeking out owners and obtaining permission to visit sites, not only is this the correct thing to do it invariably leads to more opportunities for research and photographs, information forthcoming from the landowner etc etc.

Jerry took this on-board from the outset of his “career” and in many cases his research and preparatory work surpassed ours! Jerry WILL NOT enter any site, unless public, without seeking permission beforehand.

I think most people in this thread have recognised this about him, I’d be disappointed if he was to be criticised for doing it the right way.

As for the 28 days site.. if people can post genuine, well researched and legal visits on there it could just change things around.

    Thank you.

Chris and myself were discussing this on the way home, the usual “whys” etc. Last week in the national papers there was an article relating to a lady visiting a memorial – can’t remember where or what type. On arrival she came across some youths causing damage to it, a rebuke brought the usual “FO” response from one youth who swiftly received a clip about the ear from her. Guess what? next thing she’s being arrested for assault!! That’s an example of where we are today and why these things are “allowed” to happen.

Great website, I endorse any project of this nature. Soon all the veterans and their airfields will alas no longer be with us, so sites like yours are important.

I’m sure you have some but you are welcome to use any from my website

As is the Lanc!! Just forgot to mention it – fantastic models though, a real credit to the builders. I seem to recall that the operators of large models needed some form of CAA approval / licence, is this correct?
