Sometime after the wars end a huge trench was dug just off Donna Nook, where the air weapons range is. A large amount of ordnance and other bits, were then buried here. There’s at least one tallboy bomb, and a Lancaster which crashed on the range and was also put into the trench. I was told this a couple of years ago by the RAF range ordnance safety officer, he pointed out the location of the trench and indeed at low water levels it can be seen. Apparently a lot of this equipment and ordnance is starting to surface, potentially putting the ranges future in doubt. Further down the coast at Theddlethorpe a similar situation exists. One of his comments was “you’ll not believe the amount of stuff which got buried after the war”, I go along with Moggy.

In respect of the qouted post from me earlier I remembered I posted some photos of a buried tank at Theddlethorpe on my friends website Theddlethorpe tank . Not sure what type it was (Cromwell??) not aviation I suppose but interesting.

I’m not sure if the tower was open last year, all the other buildings were so I can’t see why it won’t be.

This event at EK is superb, I strongly reccomend it. Usual format is a “normal” Lancaster taxi-run, the Spitfire display then the night run. The following firework display is, or at least was last year, awesome. There can be a bit of waiting particularly for the night run, but there’s an awful lot to see in the museum itself, also take the airfield tour aboard a Queen Mary, if the old lady (whose name I forget) is doing the commentary you’ll love it.

The actual night run is very evocative, it’s very easy to let your mind wander back in time, the hairs on the back of your neck will be standing up and you may even have the odd tear in your eyes, unless it’s just the cold weather, that’s the excuse I used anyway!

Seriously go, you’ll not regret it.

If it’s in the woods to the west that was where the bomb dump was, which you probably know. I’ve seen similar structures in other bomb dumps, it’s possibly a fuze store.

    The airfield you refer to is (was) RAF Balderton, the “new” A1 has sliced through the eastern side of it. There’s not a lot to see now of this former bomber airfield. The clocktower you mention was part of Balderton hospital, taken over as the officers mess for the war years. This may be useful;

    RAF Balderton

    Hope that helps

This one is nearly impossible, a genuine WW2 airfield, Lysanders amongst other types were based here.

    Thanks guys
Yes it looks like it is across the road, fits in with everything, particulary what Bruggens father remembers. It was the John Deere bit that was throwing me, they are, now anyway, in the area NW of, and connected to, the airfield, clearly shown in EN830s link. This area also looks like a hangar complex but I assume it was part of the operational airfield.

    Thanks

There is a God then. Glad I’m not in your office, “sorry guys we discussed that last April” Unreal.

Thanks for the constructive replies, to my mind the information in Flypast was valid for further debate, possibly new debate for some people. As I’ve said it’s the loss of historical accuracy that concerns me.

As for the search facility, which I acknowledge the use of is part of the code of conduct, I can understand it’s use when several threads are started about the same topic within a period of time, in cases like this one I have to disagree. I hope DaveM2 and JohnathonF have suitably rebuked Flypasts Jarrod Cotter for daring to raise this topic again without consulting the forum!

My only interest here is in historical aviation, I have no desire to enter into a battle of wits, particulary with unarmed opponants.

    Dave

I don’t get the time to read EVERY thread, sometimes because of career commitments I “miss” a week or two. This information was very recently in the Times, not noted for speculation. Also it’s more a case of being annoyed at the loss of accuracy than being “over excited”!

Can’t stand the pointless silly squabbles and people trying to score points, the forums are a good source of info and advice ruined sometimes by the small minority.
