It happens all too often.
I’d say Airlines go for the cheapest deal 90% of the time.
Perhaps, but the point is that the product will be of high quality as well- otherwise the airlines would not buy it.
When it comes to buying a computer, most people will normally choose what suits their needs best at a reasonable price. But few would buy a computer put together from loose parts from a dodgy geezer in a pub car park, even if it’s 75% cheaper than one in the shops, because most people know the computer in question would break down within weeks or months at best.
Airlines are not any different. If price was the main factor everyone would buy third-hand russian airliners.
Picking up isolated incidents is perhaps not terrible fair though. I’m sure if there were any safety concerns about any aircraft civil aviation authorities both here and across the Pond would jump on it fairly quickly.
As for which aircraft is better, well it’s a never-ending argument. Only the other day someone was saying that price is only one consideration to take when buying an aircraft. If some models were bad value for money airlines wouldn’t buy them, end of. However if one model is only marginally better than other, and the latter is considerably cheaper then yes, it’d be stupid for airlines not to buy them- they’re going to save themselves a lot of money (i.e. earn more) which is the aim of the company in the first place.
And I suspect that in many cases we’re talking about performance. So much as it might excite pilots and aviation enthusiasts alike, I suspect airlines don’t care much for superior power, massive engines, good looks or impressive climb rates but for economics, cost per trip or maintenance costs. So the answer of ‘which aircraft is better’ depends in most cases on who is asking the question.
Don’t get me wrong, I would dream of suggesting that. I’m simply saying that if a little green man from Mars came to earth and started reading aviation forums he would get the impression Airbus aircraft are badly built buckets with wings not worth their weight in scrap metal, given the number of ‘problems’ and reports of ‘inferiority’ one can read online.
The reality is clearly quite different and in my very humble opinion things get over-reported and a lot emphasis is put in problems that are not only common but found across the industry. However Airbus sure does seem to get most of the attention.
Don’t know where you have been for the past 4 years, but not too many airlines are making profits these days, just record losses.
So yeah, it’s a miracle they are still running.
But is that because of the choice of aircraft they operate? I very much doubt it. As a matter of fact, it’d be interesting to see the breakdown of airlines in financial trouble by aircraft manufacturer  😉
The point I was trying to make is that if Airbus aircraft were so bad why on earth is it the best selling manufacturer in the world? Judging by comments heard on various aviation forums it’s some kind of miracle the buses don’t fall off the sky! And yet airlines keep buying them by the bucketload, and they do generally fine. So are airline bosses completely incompetent and riding on their luck? Should they step down immediately and let aviation enthusiasts take charge of the airlines, since they clearly know which aircraft to buy and which to give a miss?
Or perhaps things tend to get blown out of all proportion sometimes?
Or perhaps is that all aircraft get problems here and there but once they are successfully corrected by the manufacturer they are fine performing aircraft.
Either that or hundreds of airline companies clearly don’t know the first thing about running a business, despite making profits year after year after year, and keep being conned into buying faulty and low quality products.
A miracle they’re still running eh?
You haven’t flown Airbus Sandy? You really don’t know what you’re missing mate.

That’s right, Boeing would not take the risk of bullying a government, when bribing its officials is so much easier and more effective !
The US government is more than happy to bully foreign governments on Boeing’s behalf anyway, if that Indian government officer is to be believed.
Generally speaking there are no aircraft that are vastly superior to their competitors between the two companies. Some of them offer more performance- the others are more economical. Some of them are more advanced- the others use proven technology. Some of them offer lower costs per trip- the others lower manteneance costs. And so on.
And as such, some airlines will choose a certain model and others the competition’s. It is normal and expected for both A and B to leapfrog each other as new models come out. Airbus has had two or three years of dominace. Now is Boeing’s term. And we should hope the cycle continues in this fashion. It can only be good for all concerned.
The 737NG is on a roll and is enjoying some well earned success lately.
Just shows that these things come and go like a see-saw.Though I beleive the recent successes are due to the reorganisation of Boeing as a whole. Ever since they got Stonecipher back… Boeing has been getting steadily more aggressive. And now they have a new head salesman its seems to be paying off, even without Stonecipher now.
I said it last year that “Now that Boeing has a new CEO expect a more aggressive sales pitching”.
I told ya’ll so 🙂
Either that or they’ve started to sell them cheap 😉
Just kidding. Great news for Boeing.
There is a brand new order for for an A300-600F! 😮

Must have been the first one for ages I’d imagine.
Many thanks for all the answers! I think we’ll make it to the city and have a quick look around then. 🙂
Cheers. I’m a Madrid fan, don’t get me wrong. But Barcelona had the previous week secured the league and neither team was playing for anything more than pride. You would think that it would have been enough, being the last game of the season at home and all, but it was a terrible, boring, 0-0 draw in which both teams simply kicked about the ball and made little effort. They got savaged by both the public and the press. At least Gravesen and Beckham did make an effort and played well.
(Sorry for derailment).
Cheers lads. 😀
Yes, basically went down with two mates to watch a football match (Real Madrid vs. Atleti Madrid- rubbish game on the night, sadly) and spend three days drinking, going out, sitting by the pool, etc. I’m originally from Madrid myself anyway and my family still live there.
I saw this on the a.net forum days ago.
But not wanting to quote from such untrustworthy souce, I didn’t say anything  😉
