    Private collectors or museums should get in touch with PAF high-ups. I am sure they will be more than willing to accommodate folks who can give these birds a new home.

    Manufacturers lie constantly and journos without technical backgrounds eat up their claims. Thats nothing new. I wonder if certain members are going to argue that SAR/ISAR can see shadows because certain brochures show the same? 😀

    There are actually shadows (they appear so to a human eye) in SAR pictures – it all depends on how the signals are being echoed back to the radar. Here is a good explanation:

    A useful rule-of-thumb in analyzing radar images is that the higher or brighter the backscatter on the image, the rougher the surface being imaged. Flat surfaces that reflect little or no microwave energy back towards the radar will always appear dark in radar images. Vegetation is usually moderately rough on the scale of most radar wavelengths and appears as grey or light grey in a radar image. Surfaces inclined towards the radar will have a stronger backscatter than surfaces which slope away from the radar and will tend to appear brighter in a radar image. Some areas not illuminated by the radar, like the back slope of mountains, are in shadow, and will appear dark. When city streets or buildings are lined up in such a way that the incoming radar pulses are able to bounce off the streets and then bounce again off the buildings (called a double- bounce) and directly back towards the radar they appear very bright (white) in radar images. Roads and freeways are flat surfaces so appear dark. Buildings which do not line up so that the radar pulses are reflected straight back will appear light grey, like very rough surfaces.

    In the first half of the 80s (1983?-84?, I cannot precise) during a NATO Exercise, the Portuguese Submarine “NRP Barracuda”(S-164), Daphne-type, (currently the sole submarine in service with the PN , until the commissioning of the 2 new U-209PN being built in Germany takes place, in 2010 and 2011), also “sanked” the US Carrier USS Einsenhower (CVN-69)

    Any plans to extend the production run further?

    As far as I know the initial order is for around 300 tanks (around 6-7 regiments) and after that production of another variant (Al-Khalid II) will start – this will happen some where at the end of 2007 or mid 2008.

    Regarding Al-Khalid/MPT-2000, according to Rommel (who seems well informed about these developments) and i quote him…‘three regiments are equipped with MBT2000. Other than that School of Armour and Mech. Warefare also has the tanks. Some tanks are given to DEPO for demos and HIT has quite a few for testing new things. BTW, the tanks for the 4th regiment are also almost ready’

    If a pakistani tank regiment has 44 tanks, that means 132 already delivered to 3 regiments with others gone to certain places as mentioned above. This leaves another 44 that according to Rommel are almost ready. Once these are handed over the total should be 180+. Last tanks were handed to a regiment sometime in Nov 2005 (?), and if another one is converted this year that means another 44 tanks. Now an army guy could perhaps give us an opinion about the production rate.

    That is correct. Currently three Pakistan Army Regiments (31 Cav, Guides Cav and 18 Horse) are equipped with Al-Khalid MBT’s. A fourth regiment will also be equipped with Al-Khalid’s soon – possibly within next one to two months time. Currently the production rate is 50 Al-Khalid tanks per year and this is mainly due to the allocated budget. HIT has a stated production capacity of 100 Al-Khalid tanks per year, and this full capacity might be used in future if budget is increased.
    HIT is also busy with upgrading other tanks in PA service (T-59, T-69 and T-85IIAP etc.) and is also producing various APC’s, Armor Recovery and Logistic Vehicles.

    Thanks for the article. I have one question though. What is the source of your statement that the Mistral has been exported to Pakistan ??? I would be interested in reading about it as this is news to me (I would be interested in figuring out the dates, quantities…). The fact that Bofors has been exported to Pakistan is know of everyone (you can find it in many publications), but that is not the case of the Mistral.

    Mistral is in service with Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Army. In fact it has been in service for many years now.

    PAF Faisal and Jinnah Int Airport do not share the same runway.

    Axctually I think you are looking at the ORP Orzel the Polish Kilo, she was scheduled to go out on NATO training excercises this month.

    I think you are correct because I saw white-skinned people in the conning tower when it was quiet close.

    I take that back its a Kilo class on the way to refit, based on where the wind turbines are, I take that to be the DK side near CPH.

    I used to live on the other side in SE, in Malmo.

    Yes, close to the DK; Nordhavn to be precise. Of all the subs, I never expected it to be an Indian KILO in Danish waters and that too close to a Pakistani who was busy trying to catch the Big One 😀

    I had assumed it flew between 100 and 1000 feet, depending on the profile. 30 m is probably the minimum possible height. Is this correct?

    I’ve just been reading that Denmark have retired their entire Submarine fleet, can anyone confirm this, Terran?

    Yes, the last submarine was retired couple of months ago. The Defence Minister didn’t even bother to appear on the decommissioning ceremony, and received lot of flak when he made the comment on the lines ‘I do not need to appear in every ceremony where just some equipment is being decommissioned.’
