Having done some further research around where on the aircraft the camera would be located am I correct in thinking that the camera shoots through the aircraft prop on some aircraft?

    A photo from warbirdskies; http://bp0.blogger.com/_iJ5cudRMyZI/SH46MtVO4UI/AAAAAAAAAD0/k8hOQvtoHU4/s1600/P1030282+copy.jpg

With the prop going round and the camera shooting approx 20 frames per second I wonder if this had much of an impact on the clarity of the moving pictures that were filmed. I imagine that at slower engine power settings you might expect to capture the prop appearing to be standing still? Though you might not be shooting your Gun Camera at idle power very often!

The image in the photo above is a Spitfire and has the camera mounted in the wing root. I notice that other aircraft have the camera further outboard, outside of the arc of the prop.

    Any thoughts?

Definitely think some new leader may help.

Today I dismantled the moving parts in the cassette and cleaned all the dirt from them and smoothed them as much as possible and applied some WD40 very sparingly. The film is now able to travel much more easily and the camera appears to function correctly except for an unpleasant sound.

I’m not able to identify the cause of the sound but I’ve been able to video the camera in operation and you can hear the sound……http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=plcp&v=FFA0REyJw_I

For anyone who may be interested in seeing what I’m up to I’ve filmed my attemps at running the camera in an effort to identify the issue.

To help with this, I’m running the camera on it’s side with the film cassette open.

It runs slightly better with all the hatches fastened as they help to hold the cassette in position but it still has the same issues with the film not being taken up and the friction mechanism designed to rotate the take up reel slipping.

Comments and feedback welcome – I thought about oiling or greasing the moving parts in the cassette but I’m reluctant to just in case I later run it with actual film which may not appreciate oil splashing around!

I’ve had the camera running from a 12v Lead Acid battery with limited success.

It powers the camera and it runs well but the film in the cassette isn’t advancing as it should. The drive for the take up spool is based on friction and is partly free to rotate because it must gradually get slower as the spool increases in radius as it takes up film.

The mechanism doesn’t work well as there is too much friction required to drag the film round the cassette and take it up on the take-up reel. The mechanism can’t overcome the friction so it doesn’t take up the film.

Thanks Terry! That’s a great help!

Do you own or run one of these cameras yourself?

Very grateful for all of the responses. I’ve attempted to run the camera with a length of film leader and using a small rechargeable 9v battery, didn’t want to be too heavy handed and inadvertently blow anything. The film advances slowly – the camera appears to function as it should but it’s underpowered so I need a better battery than the one I’m using.

Tried turning the transport sprocket upside down but it’s not possible. The transport sprocket in the film cassette contacts with 2 terminals inside the camera case as it turns. What effect will it have on the camera should the sprocket not turn as it should? Will the speed of the film vary much depending on the amount of film that has been taken up, is this sprocket part of that design or will it be to send information to the footage indicator that would be displayed in the cockpit?

Still trying to work out the wiring but the assistance of a copy of the manual will be welcome help.

Any suggestions on cost effective film to purchase when I’m up and running.

The wiring diagram is a great help! Thank you.

Have you been successful getting yours to run? I rather tentatively tried to get mine going with a small battery – it will advance a few seconds and the battery runs out of power! I’ll have to try something more heavy duty. Any idea what sort of current it will handle? I’ve got the 12v version.

Heating element intact on mine also. All in all the whole camera is a very clever piece of kit.

    Rob,

Thanks for the reply, you’ve given me some more things to think about.

Regarding single perforated film it will depend on the direction of travel of film and the side that is perforated as the camera has some funny moving parts to advance the film.

Powering the camera will be a challenge especially seeing as I want it to be portable. I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to moving film so I hope you can forgive my lack of common sense in this area should I mention something that is straightforward. I’ve run the camera with a battery power supply but the camera advances one frame and then stops until an electromagnet is actuated and releases a catch to allow the camera to continue to advance. A rotating ‘fan’ with a portion cut out moves round and is spring loaded and jerks round in time with the electromagnet that I mentioned earlier. Is this commonplace amongst cine cameras or will this be specific to this design of camera, is it to do with the speed of the frames per second?

It has 2 metal contacts that are contacted when the take up spool rotates through 360 degrees. Will this be causing a response in the camera or is that possibly to do with indicating how much film is remaining or possible speed of the spool depending on how much film it has taken up?

    Any suggestions welcome?

    Thanks For the response Phil,

The other thread talks about the variants of camera and to which aircraft they are fitted. I’m after specific information about how the camera operates and how to check it for correct function – in particular the inputs to the camera to activate it. For example, the camera can operate at different speeds depending on the gun fitted to the aircraft, is the camera manually adjusted or is it governed by a control unit of sorts?

    Any advice appreciated
