Ive just posted this to UKAR too.

The fast taxiing element of her retirement will be used as a money spinner for them.

Can you really see the Airport Authorities allowing a few thousand Vulcan fans airside next to the runway to watch 558 put through her paces, paying or non paying? No chance. You’ll be watching from the fence. The logistics of getting people in, organised in position and out afterwards would take ages, detracting from the main purpose for the existence of the place: an airport.

I think it’s more realistic that VTTS will charge a much smaller group decent money to see her taxi, maybe as part of a whole days ‘experience’, watching her started up etc.

Last time I saw her, as in underneath her, was in 2010, she was really suffering. Any news?

FFM, I agree with what you’re saying to an extent but I think we should all wait for the enquiry into this terrible incident to reach it’s findings and then decide whowhat was wrong. The fact that Dave Stock couldn’t eject from this is the biggest tragedy, the circumstances surrounding the crash sound so familiar to how Lightnings used to behave in service, one reason why the CAA won’t let them fly here any more.
The big issue is to why that poor bloke could not eject after trying three times. I have a Thunder City DVD I was watching a couple of days before where he was putting a paying customer through ejection seat training. His words were ‘I never have and I have no intention of ever using the ejection seat’. Sadly ironic that in this situation, maybe he could have saved himself and was unable to do so…

I’m still numb even thinking about this, for the loss of the machine, without doubt, but the fact that this fatality could possibly have been avoided. That is the biggest tragedy. Rest In Peace Dave, Blue Skies… 🙁

She flew right over my house at very low level around two o’clock, what a sight and sound!! Was in the front bedroom and knew it was her before I even looked out – there is no mistaking the sound of those 4 Merlins!!

i saw her at RAF manston air day 94, and i will never forget it!

It’ll have been earlier than that, she was grounded at Bruntingthorpe in March 1993, 1992 being her last full season.

Really? I doubt you can even start a Lightning for less than £15.

You’re not kidding!! I remember talking to Andy about it, he did say how much a barrel of Avpin was, can’t recall the exact figure, but it was just slightly short of stratospheric… 😮

    From VttS Website:

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) and Marshall Aerospace are deeply disappointed and saddened to have to announce that the planned displays of the Vulcan at the RAF Waddington International Airshow on 4th and 5th July have had to be cancelled.

As part of the 2005-7 Major servicing, a number of structural inspections had to be deferred, because it was not feasible to complete them on XH558’s airframe. It was planned by VTST and Marshal Aerospace, in agreement with BAE Systems and the Civil Aviation Authority, that these inspections would be carried out before the renewal of XH558’s Permit to Fly on 3rd July 2009, using the airframe of BAE Systems-owned Vulcan XM603 at Woodford, as part of the scrapping process of this aircraft. Unfortunately, despite best intentions, it has not yet proved possible to complete or establish mitigations for all these inspections. Consequently, we have currently not fully met the conditions that would enable the issue of XH558’s Permit to Fly renewal.

XH558 is however is fully serviceable and ready for flight, and Marshall Aerospace together with VTST and BAE Systems are doing all they can as quickly as they can to resolve this unexpected, one-off issue within the next few days. We are very sad that it is not going to be possible for the Vulcan to display at Waddington over the weekend of 4th/5th July.

Not specific to 558 I know, but could anyone explain to me what the block between the starboard engines? I thought it was something to do with the ECM possibly? In older photos of Vulcans some have the device on both sides too.

The counterpoise panel between the starboard jet pipes was used to carry the aerials for the various ECM equipment carried aboard the aircraft. Aircraft with panels between both jet pipes were the aircraft modified to carry the Blue Steel stand off missile for the reason that the missile, being carried slightly proud of the bomb bay, was interfering with the output from the sole panel carried to starboard, hence their duplication to port.

Seen this yesterday, gutted to see it to be honest. Yesterday, there was half a hangar still up and today, the lot was down bar the walls of the one nearest to Burtonwood service station junction. 🙁

Speaking from experience it is quite conceivable that the Vulcan could have done a flypast at Cosford without a permit. There is a big difference between a flypast and a display.

Fire cover was put on standby for the Sunday, whether that was for Cosford or not…

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust is determined to ensure that XH558 appears at at least one event in the 2007 season.”

They just keep on making outrageous statements that they know have no basis in fact, presumably to keep people fundraising.

With regards to them not flying last year, if you remember there was the minor issue of excessive corrosion of the undercarridge stringers, amongst other things which put them back several months. Then the delays getting parts back from OEMs, the PFCUs alone were nearly 2 months late.

Then minor snags like fuel tank leaks, PFCU problems etc etc so, no doubt, there was every intention of getting her up there last year, even if just for a flypast but, sadly, minor hitches like these are only to be expected when you’re returning a highly complex 4 jet nuclear bomber to the sky…

certainly looks like Vulcan parts to me….especially the U/C door

Flipflop Man is right, they are 99% certainly Vulcan parts. These will be all that now remains of XL392, last flown to RAF Valley on the 24th March 1982 for the fire dump and her charred remains scrapped in August of 1993.
