Last week I wrote – “Well folks, it looks as if all the efforts may have been worthwhile. There are unconfirmed reports that the Eurocontrol council of ministers have totally rejected the proposal to levy charges for using the SES concept on VFR flights or on IFR flights in aircraft of less than 2MT. In other words the current situation as has been the case since Eurocontrol started charging back in the 1970’s.”
After attending the CAA seminar at Manchester it rather looks as though those unconfirmed reports were in error. In fact due to the UK governments refusal to pick up the tag of exempting UK aircraft flying VFR and IFR if under 2MT in terms of paying the ANSP for their costs we will ALL be stuck with EUROCONTROL charges for all of our flying. I suppose there may be some letouts to be announced but do not hold your breath if you fly any GA aircraft, powered or otherwise: heavier or lighter than air.
Hope fully when they look at the complexity of any charging scheme they will back off but I really doubt it.
We tried – we really did.

Albert,
As far as I know the RAF Museum does not rely on 10p in the slot for its electricity supply so torches should be unnecessary unless you know something I dont. In previous years the HAA event has been well worth while with excellent catering for the lunchtime buffet in the mezzanine art gallery. Should suit all fans of historic aviation.

Another trademark Duxford display with something for everyone, including the FDSC…!!
The finale was awesome and the services put on some great displays however the Sea Fury had to abort its slot unfortunately. A great end to the 2004 season but dont forget next Sunday 17 October and the excellent HAA symposium at Hendon with a fascinating collection of speakers plus the chance to look round that world beating museum.

Well folks, it looks as if all the efforts may have been worthwhile.
There are unconfirmed reports that the Eurocontrol council of ministers have totally rejected the proposal to levy charges for using the SES concept on VFR flights or on IFR flights in aircraft of less than 2MT. In other words the current situation as has been the case since Eurocontrol started charging back in the 1970’s.
I am sure all the efforts put into personal responses either direct or through the GA representative bodies have played their part in forming, or even changing, the opinions of those who control Eurocontrol.
The CAA SES seminar in Manchester on Tuesday next, 12 October, may now be a bit of an anticlimax however there is still the matter of ATS approvals and aerodrome approvals and the impact on UK aerodromes and smaller regional airports. I am certain there will be much of interest there.
If the reports are correct then a huge thank you to all who got off their butts and actually DID something to assist GA fight those who would attempt to make our flying more expensive, more complex and less fun.

Having flown G-ATBG frequently over around twenty five years the airframe was to all intents and purposes identical with the Taifun but the inverted straight six Renault engine was substituted for the Argus and that meant all new cowls firewall forward blending nito the original fuselage cross-section designed for the inverted V engine cowls. The propellor was completely different being a French electrically operated VP/CS airscrew. Engine starting was by compressed air in a similar fashion to the Stampe SV4A and SV4C. The overall length was a bit greater in the Nord and, IMHO, made it more aesthetically pleasing as a nicer cruciform planview.
Hope this helps.

PS – It may be that G-ASTG goes into the restoration shops in the not too distant future. Now that will be fantastic. I do hope it happens.
Damien,
Watch out for those mixed grills – the chlorestorol count is huge. But they were sooooooooooooo delicious.

Propstrike,
Really enjoyed your great photos. That closeup of G-ANDE is going into my logbook as soon as I have cropped it to fit.
Many thanks indeed.

Frankly I hope ALL the GA representative organisations really apply some pressure on the CAA for an explanation as to why our national aviation regulatory body can ignore such a huge number of “stakeholders” in all the varied aspects of GA. It really is appalling.

What a cracker it was. My cousins Wyatt Werp and Ivor Bolokov along with uncle Ritter von Shiessen Hausen had a fabulous time after locking me in the car boot. Everyone I spoke to in the crowd enjoyed it enormously. Thanks to the organisers who put together a first rate airshow that was a great credit to all those magic past shows at Sywell

PS – It was the fifth anniversary today of Mark Hanna’s tragic accident. I think he would have enjoyed the show today. Perhaps he did – I certainly would like to think so. Rest in peace Mark, your enthusiasm and skills will always be remembered by all the airshow family.
Local TV tonight says Sunday should be good weather so keeping fingers crossed.

Here is the charging scene CAA position paper. Other aspects are covered in the same series. Hope it helps.

A great job by Damien today at the press day. Rotten morning so left the Skybolt tucked up in its Leicester hangar and drove down with my cousin Colonel Ivor Bolokov, SovAF(retd) who enjoyed the day. Press and TV out in force so it should be on BBC East and Anglia tomorrow, Friday, plus lots in the local evening paper whose delicious damsel of a reporter thoroughly enjoyed her Wilga sortie for air to air photos. Some nice flying today and all the show preparations are going nicely.
See you on Sunday for a great aeronautical day out.
Cheers,

I will dig it out of the maze of the CAA website however the clues are there as they say in that TV programme viewed by couch potatoes in the afternoon.
I will list the http address as I fear the cost of the download on my steam internet.

Barry Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. No, John is still intact as far as I know in the wedding gear region but is currently suffering from a dreadful cold, cough, throat and general yurgie. Helen is her lovely self and coming to the end of a fantastic but knackering season with the Utt Butt’s. Finally I am recuperating after an unprecedented avalanche of electronic responses to EASA, EUROCONTROL and the EU in respect of consultation on measures surely designed to put general aviation out of the aviation business. The latest is the CAA position paper on SES that, in the charging scheme area, makes no reference to GA at all. This totally ignores the fact that, at the moment, GA aircraft grossly outnumber CAT (commercial air transport -you know, Aircoach and Boinggggg thingies that chuck out more greenhouse gases than the worlds f**ting bovine population does). Ah well, tempus fugit and I have to get off to the Sywell airshow press day in the rain.
Cheers,
