Prompted by the NATS staff newspaper I have looked today at the CAA response to the SES charging proposals. It is a well thought out position paper BUT there is no mention whatsoever of General Aviation and the likely impact of the proposals as posed by EUROCONTROL on our side of aviation.

A side on which the airlines depend for their future supply of pilots but one that has no way of reclaiming the added cost of the charges proposed other than by digging deep into taxed income or by increasing the astronomic hourly charge of hiring a club aircraft.

What a dreadful comment that the CAA cannot even mention the impact on us – merely the airlines who enjoy so many advantages in taxation and the low duty on Avtur.

I would just love to be wrong here but I do not think I am.

If you want to make a response then the email address is –

    or

I will refrain from any jest on the surnames of these two, no doubt excellent, ladies who are to field your blitzkreig.

Tomorrow, Thursday, is press day from 1200 so the view from the normal public enclosure should be good. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the weather on Sunday but there is time for it to improve. I should be flying a Tiger in the show after a long break from Barnstorming so am really looking forward to the show.

The Storch is unfortunately out after its Gransden debut as the owner is struggling to finish his new home and the builders are a little uncooperative to say the least.
Its a great menu of items from which to craft the programme that should appeal to the GBP family and the aviation enthusiasts alike.

Do come as it is once again for a good charitable cause – the local air ambulance which does so much vital work in our region.

You never know. your contribution might just save your life one day……….!!!!!!!!!!

What a tragedy. I spent a magic week in Florida in the winter staying at Stuart, just up the road from Fort Pierce. No interesting aircraft based there but there were large numbers of GA machines and transient aircraft. Nice friendly airport with the usual Florida atmosphere so rare in the UK and Europe. I even got badly sunburned on 1 February which is indded a first for me. Also visited Paris Air at Vero Beach which was the finest FBO in terms of organisation and appearence I have ever encountered in 50 years as a pilot. You could literally eat off the hangar floor.

Well to the three souls who did look at this thread thank you for coming to Leicester today along with a host of other aviation enthusiasts to see the race. It was won by P Wadsworth in a Grumman AA-5B Tiger and J Spooner came second in his Bonanza with Bob Miller third in a Bulldog. Another close race with but10 seconds separating the winner from the seventh home. There were plenty of visiting aircraft and Malcolm’s cuisine extraordinaire filled everyone up.
A grand day out however its a rotten evening now and looks like being so for a few days.

    Steph,
Glad you had a nice day. Though it looks a bit like Fort Knox Sywell is an aerodrome with so much history and some superbly restored art deco architecture. Far nicer than Shoreham which is getting a little tatty and neglected, at least it was the last time I visited. There is the Sywell Airshow on Sunday 26th September with a fabulous programme of items including the Warbird trio from Breighton and the Catalina. If you can do come as it will be the only airshow in Northamptonshire this year.

    :dev2: Moggy,
It certainly has not but then, what self respecting daughter ever tells her dad anything of real interest other than what birthday present she would kill for. I must say the leather outfits made me blush at times as they strained to climb up to the rig. Tried to persuade them to have a bad weather alternative of rubber and pvc but they all gave me funny looks and did not speak to me for days.
I met the Hollander outfit in Sweden three weks ago. They fly a single 450hp Grumman Agcat with a rig and two wing riders who are gorgeous Swedish girls. One blonde and one brunette. Again tight suits are de rigeur and their smoke system would empty an Esso road tanker if they went on any longer. Ljungbyhed aerodrome went IFR for 10 minutes till it cleared a bit. Magic.

PS – OK Moggy I understand. It takes a fair amount of bottle to ride the rig, still less do the cockpit/rig/cockpit transfers. Brendan O’Brien split his jeans seam when he did it and I was unfortunate enough to be his chauffeur. With Brendans dimensions it was a veeeery difficult transfer but he loved the aerobatics.

    Moggy,
You really are a crawler in your quest for a trip on top. Seriously though, your comments are well made since without sponsorship all our professional UK airshow acts would just disappear and we would all be much the poorer. I am sure Helen and Vic will appreciate your plea. Incidentally anyone could always write to AeroSuperBatics at THe Old Engine House, Rendcomb Aerodrome, The Whiteway, Rendcomb, Cirencester, Gluocestershire for a signed photograph anytime. They are up to their eyeballs in airshows now but if you give them a bit of time I am sure the Aerobabes will oblige……………but only with a photo…………..sod it…………..!!!!

No one has mentioned one of the nicest colour schemes and for that matter sponsors many moons ago and that, on a single Stearman, was the motoring journal “Car magazine”. Gorgeous blue with really great air brush artwork.
I probably have some prints of it somewhere but they are not catalogued and sit in their original packets. Perhaps some keen retired gentleman might like to undertake a real labour of love with my assistance, and that of my 23 volumes of logbooks, on captions
I took it to Newtownards and Baldonnel one year where it was plastered with temporary fablon logos for an Irish company, “Electravision” or something like it. No doubt someone out there will have the odd photo but it all predated digital and to scan all of my photos would need at least the surplus Met Office Cray supercomputer recently retired and replaced.
AeroSuperBatics, which is the operator of the teams four 450hp Stearman’s, is run by Vic Norman, aviator extraordinaire. He has attracted many sponsors over the years, far more than any other airshow team. This year the “Utterly Butterlies” will give well over 100 displays all over the UK, Ireland and Western Europe.

    Damien,
You and me both, and I was supposed to know. He really is an ace aerobat and I think EXXON, his sponsor, will be well pleased since the four minute freestyle is more akin to an airshow performance that the other elements of the contest. Dave Perrin who the trophy commemmorates was one of the finest ever freestyle guys and those who saw him in the past saw a true artist at work. The video “Man in the sky” that was produced for Rothmans and featured David is an absolute classic. See it if you can borrow it.

Well its over for yet another year. The 2004 champions are as follows –
    Unlimited
1st Tom Cassells – that taciturn Yorkshireman in a CAP 232
2nd Mark Jefferies – a true man of the soil in his Elite Extra 300S
3rd Gerald Cooper – aerial photographer and my namesake restorer extraordinaire in another CAP 232.
    Advanced
1st Mark Walden – every womans dream of a pilot in his CAP222
2nd Garry Ferriman – garagiste fantastique in his Super Stinker Pitts S1-11
3rd – Tim Jenkinson – from the worlds favourite airline in his utterly immaculate and colourful Pitts S1 (modified)
The winner of the “David Perrin” trophy for the four minute freestyle was Mark Jefferies in the Elite Extra 300S
The start was delayed due to a wait for the cloud cover to break and then lift clear of the box so flying did not start until after 1200 however the afternoon saw non stop aerobatics of a very high order.
There were loads of folk there to enjoy the occasion.

Looks like the last day of the Nationals will be another one with superb weather. Will drop in at Sywell on the way to Turweston for the PFA AGM so should have an hour or so watching the action at this feast of aerobatics. Saturday is usually the day of the four minute freestyle for the David Perrin trophy and this gives contestants an opportunity to go beyond the Aresti confines and into the wierder gyroscopic manoevers to fill the aerobatic box with their brilliance (or otherwise). The judging standards do lean towards subjectivity as opposed to the fairly rigid objectivity imposed by the CIVA judging rules. Come along and test your own assessment of the various pilot’s skill.
Once again I emphasise it is all FREE. Viewing facilities could not be better and if you have an interest in aerobatics, actual or latent, then Sywell is the spot for you today – cos its just gone midnight and geriatrics should be in their beds (or someone elses).
    Cheers and good night,

    Damien,
Could be down to 100 metres before incurring penalties so that keep them a bit higher as a precaution. Yes, the percentage of time they are in the front of the 1000 metre cube is limited but so is the time they are over at the far side. Halfway is the FAA munimum aerobatic airshow line in the States anyway. AND IT IS ALL FREEEEEEEEE….!
