I think you go a little far mon ami,a normal forum member would be severely censured for this sort of comment.
I am really surprised by this comment,Planemike is a really nice guy !

I am sure he is but his opinions stick in my craw. For me to get so passionate about something like this is indeed a rareity, see all of my previous posts on numerous threads over many years of contributing to this forum.

I am a normal forum member but one with a huge amount of experience in airshows, over five decades in fact as both poacher and gamekeeper with over 2,300 public display performances under my belt.

To quote George Orwell – “All men are equal but some are more equal than others”.

A public forum like this does not differentiate between those of high experience and those with none. I accept that Planemike has been an airshow enthusiast for as long as I have but his opinions are totally unacceptable to me on this question.

Can’t believe I missed this post. Almost wet my pants.

You are not the only one and some swallowed it whole. Such is the level of speculation surrounding just what and who will appear on the final programme for what, in any case, will be two utterly scintillating weekend days at Duxford plus the entertaining arrivals and practice day on Friday.

I am certain all who go will enjoy the occasion immensely even the few scroungers that might be in the vicinity. Let us all pray for a safe display on both days with some cooperation from the weather gods.

appears it is not the season of goodwill. I do not like usually like ‘spongers’ at airshows, however, if someone falls on hardtimes, I will not be the one to be unkind.

I am disappointed that this thread has become a slanging match. Reasoned discussion is one thing, insults are not really required.

I too am disappointed and sad that times are hard for many these days. I fully agree there is worse to come in terms of the amount of disposable income that will be available over the next decade or so. What will the situation be for airshows in the years ahead? Will there strill be the number of airworthy warbirds that exist now?

Nevertheless the risk to the individual enthusiast and to the airshow pilot is such that watching the show from outside the crowd enclosures is a stupid and thoughtless action. Tragedy has happened at Duxford and elsewhere in previous shows over many years taking the lives of friends and colleagues in the aircraft. There have been no third parties involved in the UK and that is a blessing. The funerals were heartbreaking but the guys were doing what they loved until a millisecond or twenty before impact. Those who were left behind still grieve. As I do also.

After Rouen I am passionate about this question and will not assist those who elect to risk their lives as non-paying spectators and uninvited guests on someones property. If I could prevent them doing so I would but I cannot.

You are entitled to your view point. I am entitled to mine even although I have not been involved in drafting any regulations. Is it unreasonable to expect a little respect ??

I am sure other forum readers are perfectly capable of forming their own opinions.

    Planemike

The mentally challenged are not entitled to an opinion expressed in a public forum. They should remain securely in a sound proof padded cell.

Is this something new?? I should imagine in Roman times there were a few people who sneaked in to see the Gladiators!

But they did not sue the tribune if they got eaten by the lions. In these PC and ambulance chasing lawyer days they would. Et tu Brute

Should any landowner of land or property outside the airfield boundary allow folk in to watch and even more so if a charge is made then he had better have a zillion in public liability insurance just in case.

Errr.. WRONG. Nothing to stop one of the vintage aircraft that fly right over my house before turning finals crashing into my garden or property on the edge of Duxford village.
But as i have just watched four Spitfires, a Buchon, two Mustangs and a B17 land.. not to mention the two Apaches that just flew through and the F86 that just took off… i’ll try not to think about it.

Some would view you homes location as being Heaven, some would not. Most of Duxford was built long after it became an aerodrome in WW! and those who bought homes there had a choice. I think you were probably pleased to acquire your own home though whether a Wyvern ever landed there I have no idea. Certainly not in the last 50 years or so.

Enjoy the view next weekend. It is, after all, your own property. I envy your location but will still use the tickets I bought a month ago.

Your slightly insulting attitude are neither necessry nor appreicated. Calling a fellow forum member “stupid” is not warranted. By all means take a different point of view to me but please respect my right hold an alternative view.

Maybe I misundertand what you are saying but it seems to come over as, inside airfield = safe, outside airfield = totally unsafe.

My point is that there are safer places to watch an airshow from outside an airfield. Not so an unreasonable point of view I would submit.

    Planemike

It was necessary and I care not if you appreciated it. The post was truly warranted. Read again what I said about the regulatory situation, I had a large part in drafting it, you certainly did not.

The safest place to watch an airshow is on your TV from the comfort of an armchair in your living room. This on the Planes TV DVD issued some time after the event. With all due respect to that companies expertise they cannot capture the live atmosphere on the day. It is, however, as safe as your living room can be.

Your point is crass and should be viewed as such by all the thread readers.

Have to say I do not understand this logic. There must be places where it is possible to watch a show “from over the hedge” without putting oneself or others at any great risk. Being on the airfield does not guarantee safety, I am sure I do not need to list the instances where display a/c have fallen on spectators within an airfield.

Any activity in life including travelling to the air show involves some element of risk.

Were I cynical (perish the thought!!!), I would say you may be trying to ensure the airshow organisers can swell their coffers.

    Planemike

    PS Rouen 2001………???

    Planemike,

You are quite obviously an infant in these matters. Airshows are revoltingly expensive to organise, especially for an event like Flying Legends. Do you really think the organisers stage this for their own amusement. Profit may or may not follow, depending on so many factors virtually impossible to predict. Been there and worn out many T shirts. Sadder but not wiser as a result. My passion for the airshow circus remains undimmed and I do pay to attend.
In the UK CAP403 and the regulatory environment does its best to ensure the safety of those attending to the greatest possible degree. The same level of protection CANNOT be given to those who choose, for whatever reason, to watch from outside the crowd area. Yet if they should find themselves injured, or their families bereaved, the litigation that will surely follow might finish airshows in the UK for ever. Are you prepared for that eventuality…??? If you are, then you are selfish in the extreme and not merely a bloody fool.

PS – The Rouen tragedy was totally avoidable and caused by folks with the same ideas as you. A fine pilot dead and a magnificent Spitfire destroyed when the problem could have been solved so easily. Is there any wonder I find myself incensed at your stupid post.

    Hello all,

Does anyone know of a good place to watch the show from outside of the airfield? I very much want to go this year but its looking like money might be an issue. Can anyone offer any handy tips??

    thanks alot

    Ross

Sorry but I have no sympathy or advice to give you other than to bite the bullet and fork out the entrance fee. Hedge guests put themselves in danger and give display pilots an extra hazard to avoid in the event of a problem. In missing you they may die…. do you want that…??? I think not.

If you cannot afford the cost then for God’s sake stay away.

For those coming from far away, like my friends & I have done every time… stay for both days. Considering the expense & energy involved both days is the best.
Don’t worry about the Ticket cost. Just spread it out over the year if you need an excuse! (or quit smoking!!!)
What we have also done is look at the museum & the airfield activities on either the Friday before or Monday after. This way you can spend time in the museum with fewer people than you will have on Sat or Sun.
For those coming the first time…Good Decision. You will never forget your visit and after the show you will be thinking about coming again.

What wise words. Having attended all the FL shows through the years, both as spectator, poacher and gamekeeper, I could not agree more.

For sheer spectacle, if not backdrop and photographic attributes, it si the best I have encountered in some six decades of attending, or flying as a participant in, airshows riound the world.

But is it in need of a total rebuild, or just lots of TLC… ;):D

    T J

TLC would indeed be much appreciated. Possibly by the polishing posse from Old Warden whose talents are indeed tantalising. A total rebuild must await considerable progress in the stem cell research programme though hope springs eternal. I am having some problems in that it is taking industrial quantities of viagra to get it off the ground….!!!!

I can say with complete confidence that there will be at leasr one Tempest at Legends, possibly two. They will not arrive in a container either, or at least I hope not.

I think there are probably regulations against closer display flying, but I agree with you about these huge shows on the whole. I have no interest in them what so ever anymore, and it does seem like they are just trying to cram in more and more aircraft (usually multiples of the same type), so that thousands of people can get the same photos and all sit in jams on the way home.
Much prefer the smaller, more informal events, such as the coast shows, the odd flypast at old airfields etc.

You are right about the regulations which are nevertheless more permissive than in North America for example. Our Fed’s are better than their Fed’s in terms of allowed distance out from the crowd. Duxford’s problem is the concave crowd line that means the primary axis display line has to be a lot further out to ensure separation at the ends. Now if it were convex like Old Warden………!!!!

There is a solution but it would need a huge amount of investment in land and infrastructure in a time of recession and cut backs. Planning permission would also be difficult bearing in mind Duxford village who just might be up in arms.

Without doubt Legends is the finest warbird show in Eorope and possibly the World despite the display line constraints. Every year TFC organises a fabulous spectacle for all of us through the brilliant Jane Larcombe and her band of assistants.

Bernard is great along with whoever is the straight man in the commentary team. All it needs is a producer with a mute fader. He determines when to fade out the rabbitting and fade it back in. It might be wise for him to be remote from the commentating pair who might give him one otherwise. Surely a knowledgable individual can be found who will watch for appropriate periods of silence and those for chat. C’est facile n’est ce pas……..!!
Felicitations Bernard. A bientot, Seulement cinq semaines a le premier meeting d’aviation dans tout Europe pour 2010.
