I rememer meeting Hartmann and Barkhorn at Coltishall a few decades ago along with Johnny Johnson and other RAF aces. It was at a BoB Fighter Pilots reunion coinciding with the, then, annual BoB display.

In the bar that evening I asked Johnson who, apart from himself, was the best fighter pilot he had ever known. His answer was most profound – he said “the best was a guy killed on his first sortie, he had the skill but no luck”.

The phrase that “Old age and treachery will always beat youth and skill come to mind”. Wish it were true in my own case. Sod it.

To have had the chance to meet such a fantastic group of WW2 pilots, now the very best of friends, was one to be remembered always.

If Shuttleworth want to acquire a Pitts then perhaps they should approach John Jordan who, I believe, still owns the first Pitts S1 built in the UK. It was actually built at Old Warden for Neil Williams back in the early 1970’s by a couple of Shuttleworth stalwarts. I think the registration is G-AXNZ but I might be wrong. Perhaps some anorak can correct me.

Rob Millinship has light years of pleasure ahead in his Pitts so although he might commute to Old Warden sometimes in G-FLIK he will not, I feel, be donating it for a long time yet.

Past policy at Shuttleworth was, in my opinion, flawed in that so many aeroplanes were allowed to leave either by sale or a less than positive attitude towards private owners. I saw the Gull at Auckland about four years ago and I swear both the aeroplane and I shed a tear at the forever grounded state of the aeroplane. Remember those grand displays by Angus McVitie? I do, and miss them still.

Really do not care where Stephen is from but I suspect it is the UK.

What I do care about is the enormous pleasure his devotion to warbirds has given to us all. God knows at what cost over so many years but we all owe him a debt of sincere gratitude.

Apart from that he is a really nice bloke with a fantastic family behind him. As a company doctor, friends tell me, he is without equal.

Really wish TFC and the PFA could avoid a clash of dates. It is difficult to choose. Duty calls one way and pleasure the other. I suppose it will be a flight back to base on Saturday evening then drive to Legends on the Sunday, at least if it is a bit cooler than 2003.

Would really like to see the FlugWerk replica FW190 but would prefer a Dora variant one day. Happy memories of years gone by in G-ATBG with all the “gear” on….!!!!!!!!

Had a great time out in Spain many years ago flying Lindsey Walton’s Nord 1002 for the film “Bethune”. On arrival at Cuatro Vientos the Luftwaffe marks were hastily obliterated and Spanish civil war Nationalist marks substituted. After the filming was complete I flew it back to the UK via Biarritz, Poitiers, Le Touquet and Southend to Lindsey’s home strip. It was still in the Spanish markings and generated a lot of interest en-route.

Congratulations to RAF Breighton for a brave decision which I do hope is as indicated. To see another Buchon in the UK Airshow circuit will be great. Bet Taffy and Brian have to get into sphincter tensioning mode fairly soon.

Just looked at Damien B’s post and superb picture. My only comment is that if the foreshortening continues it will soon be best to ask for Runway 15 or 33 due to the fact that 06/24 has shrunk to marginal for even a Cub.

“The display routine that 558 use to do, screaming take offs, rollers and all that, have been approved by the CAA, so I would expect to see a similar display routine in civvy street.”

A quote from earlier in the thread. However the Vulcan was in RAF service in its previous display career and any routine would have been authorised through the military system. The CAA was not involved in any way other than to observe its participation in civil airshows and, very occasionally, to make the odd adverse comment to the RAF display monitoring system thorough the, then, Inspectorate of Flight Safety.

The civil Display Authorisation system is rather different and can be found in CAP403 if anyone cares to look at it on the CAA website in “publications”.

I write this as a former CAA airshow inspector so have a fair idea of what I am saying………!!!!!!!!!!

It would be great to see a Vulcan back in its element but I doubt if the operator would fly it with quite the verve shown by its former RAF display pilots. They both entertained and occasionally frightened me.
