Anyone have the original concept of the f23???

I’ve never seen the F-23 proposal itself, but here’s an old Northrop patent drawing … sorry for the low quality, but maybe somebody else has a better copy?

Actually one of the main problems with that there design was instability. They might have kept it, but good luck getting it to fly 😀

From the articles I have read, the instability was addressed by narrowing the “glove” that runs from the nose to the wing roots. In fact, the weapons bay was rearranged and the entire fuselage was narrowed.

It was very controversial within Lockheed when they ditched this design and started over with what we now know as the YF-22. The engineers who favored this design must have been convinced that it would fly, and fly quite well.

I’m not saying this design would have been better than the YF-22, I’m just saying it’s an interesting what if. 🙂

My favorite could-have-been design is Lockheed’s original ATF proposal. Maybe it doesn’t count, because the project wasn’t canceled, just this particular design. But I still think it’s a fascinating “what if.”

Lockheed worked on this design for years, then abandoned it because it was considered overweight. But some Lockheed engineers fought passionately to keep this design, arguing that the weight problems could be solved and that the inherent stealthiness was better.

I just think it looks cool 🙂

MiG apparently had something like this in mind as a modern Foxbat.

Well, for what it’s worth, here’s my attempt to reshape the nose, wing and tail. I don’t have time to do a 3-view, but I envision a 1.42-type chin inlet.

I’m sure the pros at Mikoyan will do a much better job 🙂

I’m very glad to hear that MiG is still in business and thinking about the future ….

    Fascinating, Deino.

But not a darn thing like Lockheed’s early ATF 🙂

Second that. Great pics. And they would make a nice reference site.

For some values of “similar”, probably. 😀

Well, I should have said somewhat similar instead of remarkably. I mean, look at the “catamaran” style mother ship that carries the spaceship slung underneath. The design concepts are similar, indeed. 🙂

Overscan, a very special thank you for this post. Somebody like you should put together a “what if” site for Russian designs, kind of like Luft46 but not tied to a specific year.

Doesn’t this design look remarkably similar to Rutan’s SpaceShipOne, which flew Monday?

I thought the Amerika Bomber was a six engined derivative of the Horten IX. It was pusher-propellor or jet powered proposal based on the Horten brothers tailless design.

The Amerika Bomber was a project, not a specific plane. Germany wanted a plane that could deliver a nuclear bomb to the East Cost of the US, and several companies submitted proosals, including this flying wing design from Horten.

ELP said “At the end of the day, all it is, is a piece of artwork, with just initial concept, some lab testing and no flying.”

That’s all any aircraft is when the design process has just started. Yes, Sanger was thinking way ahead of technology. But that might be a compliment, not a criticism.

Part of the explanation is the very lack of information that you mention.

If you want info about Russian/Chinese aviation, your local bookstore and newsrack won’t be much help. You have to turn to the Net and forums like this one. And when a tidbit of information leaks out, it gets pounced on.

    I wouldn’t call it a bias …

Maybe we could call it “sneak preview” advertising … 🙂

    But I see your point.

OK, Bug Lover, I’ll reply 🙂

Your design is quite good, and I’m certainly impressed with your drawing skills.

But it seems a bit small for Srbin’s requirements. Probably too small for internal weapon bays, and not enough fuel space for supercruising. It seems more like an advanced trainer/lead-in fighter.

I wish I could draw my design like yours … oh well.

Nice looking aircraft, Overscan. Is it related to an “MFI” top view that you posted a while back? Looks similar, but I think your MFI had a chin intake, which I liked.

Maybe somebody should start a thread for people to post what they think the PAK FA should look like, before we see the real thing.
