Wonder how that compares with other popular kit planes engines given their shorter TBO times? Yet that’s not he whole picture is it?
TCO factors: TBO, cost of unit replacement, parts, maintenance, fuel burn
I feel a formula coming on! 🙁
About £6 per dry flying hour
2400 hrs TBO on the -L2A 118hp variant (such as in the Robin HR200 and C152 I think) at around 5gph and in full training service making it a very tough, long living engine.

Thng is when you take the rag off any tube a whole multitude of other problems surface 🙁
FLYER i think did when they reviewed the Zlin a while back.
The Airmaster (C165) is for sale and very nice it is too.
Yes perhaps we could go back to square one and ask why the Druine came out top amongst all other options?
Well it’s all okay if you have money to burn. Have had a Saitek in the past but parts kept detaching themselves, not even through overuse or abuse. My mate had 3 Wingman sticks all decided to stop working.
So on the basis of this, I bought the MS FF2 stick. Again shame they stop making them. Everything else you can use the keyboard for.
Like many who’ve been up in Maggie, it’s been a real treat. I did though have it sprung on me so the anticiplation hadn’t been allowed to build so apologies if I didn’t appear immediately taken. What really did make my hairs stick out on end was primarily to do with being topless 🙂
1. Looking left and right out along those yellow tapering wings toward the blue contrasting horizon, you see that there is nothing holidng you there but the wings. The magic of flight 😎
2. Peter stuffing the nose down toward a tree to get into a good downwind position. Now that abstract degree of reality by having a canopy in front of yu is no longer. That tree is really there looking good, hard and dangerous if we hit it.
A Hairyplane supporters club (no donations other than sweat and beer in my direction) sounds like the deal of the century to me.
You have my number … I know some decent local pubs 😉
Glad the PT22 stayed in the area by the way
Cheers

Bought a share again this Spring by setting up an aircraft group. Meant got an hour or so on a Maule M7-180 GWALY) at Sywell.
Then have flown a few hours on my Maule M5-235 (GBVFT) but not enough. Like the Jodel, I’ve had a problem sourcing a full-time instructor with spare time. Arrangements have recently been made to fix this problem.
Hopefully can go solo and then some before bad weather of Autumn/Winter sets in ….
..and then went into a Jodel group at Bidford the folllowig Spring. But it was a poorly run group and the aircraft had maintenance issues. It toasted itself last year though I wanted to continue initially, l took the money and ran. Good riddance with hindsight!
I found out taildraggers can be fun by doing a tailwheel conversion and farm strip course at Clacton two years ago
Along the way, I have tried many an aircraft (sage advice from certain people) and yes a large amount of blagging, networking and luck involved. Here are some notable examples (in no particular order)
Wittman Tailwind
Europa
Miles Magister (thanks Hairyplane)
Kitfox Mk2 (tight fit)
C182
Gardan Horizon
Cub L4
Couple of glider flights (Hus Bos and Syerston)
Aviat Husky
Chipmunk
18 months later and long bouts of bad weather in between, I passed and of course, learnt about how to fly a Warrior.
I rather think Great Auntie Wendy here on BTBC looks like a bit like Mrs Moggy (about same age too). An ex-Moggy mount too 🙂
GYTO is a Warrior 3 and has taken me some time to master the twin GNS 430s contained within.
I first had a trial lesson about 4 years ago in a HR200 Robin. Spent some months a further trial lesson ina PA38 wondering if I could afford to take it up and which aircraft to fly in.
I finally though “what the hell” started and went for the Robin, though didn’t get the lovely Louise to fly with. Luckily John turned out to be a good egg and so did Rick later on.
