    Indeed it is.

If you were lined up on the runway, not moving, with 20 knots of wind blowing on your nose, then your airspeed is 20 knots. Groundspeed being stationary is nothing. Think of the wind going over wings at 20 knots so creating lift; velocity is relative and is a function of the lift equation

So if we land into wind, we have a reduced groundspeed and so a shorter roll. Conversely landing with a tailwind means the ground roll is much longer and you require much more runway. It’s also a trickier thing to do a with tail and crosswind component.

If the wind is bang 90 degrees across the runway, then either direction on the runway is valid (0 knots head or tailwind). But you have to consider the aircraft’s ability to maintain a straight line on the runway given i) the control authority and ii) your ability to cope.

In all cases, before landing it is up to you to decide if the runway in use is a good choice given the conditions.

Are you thinking of doing or are commencing your PPL, Stephen?

Chaps, it seemed to me at the time an odd thing to ask on a forum with little experience of that type. The obvious method surely to answer the question would be to ask the design bureau of Zenair? 🙂 Unless they’re being really unhelpful.

Or perhaps now come to think of it, the LAA (nee PFA) forum (but you need to be a member to post)

Incidentally I saw the Vice-Chair of the LAA the other day. He’s the guy who highlighted the poor efficiency (traffic:area) in the Coventry airspace proposal. Despite his day job for a UK airline, it would seem he has an interest in GA and protecting it. Top man.

    Thread resurrectus from Aug 2006!

Given the above thread didn’t get very far, forumites should have had a chance to read Blue Man Falling by now. How did you rate it?

I have some free time now for a few weeks and BMF popped up literally out of the blue as a possible one to read.

Warwickshire has traditionally not used fixed speed cameras rather has gone down the insidious “safety van” route. But now they are putting a GATSO on the main road next to me.

Yes some people do take a while to slow down from 40 to 30. But there has never been an accident on that road. Should they have an accident case before installation?

By request, title amended for Janie’s benefit. Let me know if I’ll ever get to the front of your P2 seat – I have MCC training you know so am completely house-trained 😉

It would appear that http://www.tvoc.co.uk has gone u/s, likely under the vast load!

    1. Look at the power outputs of a gas turbine compared the last greatest piston engines fitted to warbirds
    2. Compare the masses of those engines
    3. Look at all the big shiny metal that is now able to fly around the sky on a jet engine

    Also get this maybe

It will not be Tuesday, the weather is not right. The CAA insist on the right conditions and tomorrow’s is not right.

    Generally moist…

The Government will claim that it is not within their remit to influence operational procedures or matters both with BAA or NATS (esp if those companies are technically privately owned – even if the quiet shareholder is them!). Nice try but it will not get very far I fear given how past petitions have been handled.

I can’t see that Grey said anything on this thread 😉

Mel C was on Scott Mills/Radio 1 the other day and denied the story along with a bunch of other myths iirc.

Does Travolta posses a 757 TR?
