The obvious presumption is the Commies must have an equivalent aggressor or test squadron with NATO/US aircraft that they may have borrowed/salvaged from China, Iran, North Korea, or South Vietnam?

“Recent Mossad Undisclosed ‘False Flag’ Operations”
by repost Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006 at 6:00 AM
Just when Clinton was considering a pardon for Marc Rich because of his role with Israel in helping Milosevic combat Yugoslavia’s Muslims and their ambitions, the Chinese Secret Intelligence Service’s Director of Strategy, Colonel Xu Junping, defected to the United States, threatening apparently to tell all about Beijing’s assistance in the process, plus much more. China became so alarmed, it seems, at the prospect of the defector telling all about Israel’s and its assistance to Milosevic – undercutting any proposed trial of him at The Hague – that it forced a confrontation with Washington. On April 1, 2001, Chinese fighters forced an American EP-3E Aries II spy plane, with 24 US crewmen on board, to crash-land on China’s Hainan Island, expecting to force Washington to hand over Xu Junping for the crew, especially since Beijing had lost one of its pilots in achieving the forced landing.

“Details of secret MiG squadron unfold”

Imagine having to fly and maintain Soviet MiG fighters without tech data and spare parts.
That was the challenge airmen assigned to the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron faced for 12 years when the unit secret assignment was to fly about two dozen MiG fighters.

“Air Force declassifies elite aggressor program”
11/13/2006 – WASHINGTON (AFPN) — After decades of secrecy, Air Force officials acknowledged Nov. 13 that Communist-built fighters were flown at the Tonopah Test Range northwest of Las Vegas, Nev.
Threat aircraft flown by the Red Eagles spanned several decades and technical generations of capability. There was the MiG-17 Fresco, a small, agile single-seat transonic fighter placed in service just after the Korean War and used extensively over Vietnam and the Middle East; the MiG-21 Fishbed, a high supersonic fighter used world-wide in large numbers, and the swing-wing MiG-23 Flogger, likewise in global service, an attempt by the Soviets to match the sophisticated capabilities of the F-4 Phantom.

[Some commented the penalties to these PLAAF REMFs were relatively lighter than when a few years ago, several PLAN REMFs were fired, after the crew of a PLAN sub were all killed, and a fishing boat found the sub surfaced and uncontrolled in Bo Hai (Bo Sea).]
