Bad tracking ranges of the radar, inability to support AMRAAM and AAM-4, structural defects on the wings prevent testing of larger AAMs.
If any member’s interested, here’s a probably incomplete list of F-2 accidents. Mostly TFOA (Things Falling Off Aircraft); no crash yet.

During training, JASDF F-2 dropped static electricity rod into sea.
Based at Matsushima AB, Miyagi Prefecture.
Length 13 cm, diameter several mm, weight 10 g, graphite.
After landing, during maintenance, one of three rods on right wing missing.

Two test pilots not wounded.
About 14:45, took off at Nagoya AP.

About 16:04, emergency landed. Runway temporarily closed.

Panel and five safety pins inside panel, missing at bottom left side of fuselage.
On 6 September, after flight data analysed, ADTW announced panel dropped into Japan Sea, near Ishikawa Prefecture.

9:06, JASDF F-2, 03-8103, emergency landed at Komatsu AB, Ishikawa Prefecture.
9:02, during test flight before delivery, about 5,000 m above Sea of Japan, engine overheat warning light activated.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries mechanics checked aircraft at Komatsu AB, found no evidence of engine fire, and thought warning was false alarm.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries test pilot, while operating other instruments, accidentally activated drag chute switch.
Drag chute, diameter 7 m, length 8 m, weight 23 kg.
