I hope it takes a while to make a decision on the F-4EJ Kai replacement………I’d like to see those birds in service a while longer.
FYI, in the JDA official site, according to the Defense of Japan 2005 White Paper, at
http://jda-clearing.jda.go.jp/hakusho_data/2005/2005/html/17s21000.html
as of 31 March 2005, the JASDF has 27 RF-4E/EJ and 91 F-4EJ, the latter include 84 F-4EJ Kai.
(Don’t know how many operational F-4 do Greece, Iran, Israel, Turkey, &c, have?)

I thought russian AAM design already weird enough, but this Japanese AAM seem come straight from Ultraman series.
FYI, the JDA official site at
http://www.jda.go.jp/jasdf/gallery/yuudodan.htm
also has a small pic of the gnarly AAM-3 Type 90 air-to-air guided missile.
] and about the Soviet era licence fee part, do you mean that it essentially came free
ISTR when China and the FSU broke up their friendship, China had to repay the FSU?
For example, China “exported” a lot of steel to the FSU?
] Provided ofcourse that Mao didn’t opt for a peculiar sort of nationalist-communism,
] which he of course did.
After the purges, the PRC under Chairman Mao wasn’t too different from the Qing Dynasty China under the Emperors that was overthrown, IMO.

(Possibly my “dumb question of the week”.)
In screen shots of the computer game Battlefield 2, which
came out on 2005.06.21, such as
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/battlefield2/screens.html?page=203
the Chinese Su-30MKK/MK2 has the nose number 03.
Does anyone here know the details of the real PLAAF or PLAN Su-30MKK/MK2 that has this nose number?
Such as unit, military district, home base, &c?
Don’t know if anyone here already seen this before.
Yahoo! China News has a special section about the China-Russia joint military exercises, on 2005.08.18 to 2005.08.25 in the Shan Dong Peninsula, at
http://cn.news.yahoo.com/news_maneuver0503/index.html
which, for example, summarises the involved hardware and units.
BTW, in the computer game Battlefield 2, which comes out on 21 June 2005, the F-35 has the nose code 21, “MARINES” on its fuselage, and tail code VA.
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/battlefield2/screens.html?page=121
http://www.virtualwarriors.co.uk/e107_plugins/kig_menu/_imagefiles/flybyresized.jpg
The real tail code VA is the 149th FS “Rebel Riders”, 192nd FW/OG, Virginia ANG, 9th AF, ACC, USAF, based at Richmond IAP/Byrd Field, Virginia, USA. Not USMC. The 149th FS is equipped with the F-16C/D Block 30 Fighting Falcon.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/050730/481/tok80207300521
reported:
On 30 July 2005, about 11:45, an USN UH-3H, While returning to base, made an emergency landing at a fishing port area, about 30 m from the Katase beach, Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. About 400 m south of the Katase Enoshima train station of the Odakyuu line.
It belonged to Atsugi AB, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Lubricant oil pressure warning light came on.
Four crew were not wounded.
Because it was Saturday, thousands of people were at the beach.
At 10:15, it took off from Atsugi AB, for a two hours training sortie over the Sagami Bay.
Oil leak was found near the main rotor shaft.
After repair, about 18:45, it departed and returned to Atsugi AB.
From the news photos, that UH-3H, marked “COMSEVENTHFLT”, looks like TA-11 of Detachment 11, HSL-51 “Warlords”, USN, based at NAF Atsugi.
(It would be funny if the 7th Fleet commander was on it when it emergency landed.)

In the Chinese (China) news site China.com, an article at
http://military.china.com/zh_cn/critical3/27/20050723/12507287.html
mentioned: the location, consequences, and other details of this crash.
But the reliability of this article is uncertain.
FYI, I’ve been curious about the position and type of the cannons on the new-generation jet fighters, like the Gripen, J-10, JSF, Rafale, Raptor, Typhoon, &c; so I’ve been searching the Web, on and off, for public domain information about them, then using the Search function of this forum to help update the related threads. 8)
For comparison,
http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread35304/pg6
and
http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/planes/q0163.shtml
claim the USAF variant has a built-in GAU-12 25 mm gun, above the left intake; and the USMC/USN variant has a GAU-12 25 mm gun pod.
