    Nekomimi X F-2 Super Kai

I Googled “F-2 Super Kai”, and according to

the photos were from about 9-11 October 2004, at the Lockheed-Martin booth at an international aerospace event called Japan Aerospace 2004, at the Pacifico Yokohama, in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

As you may know, the “kai”, as in F-4EJ Kai and F-15CJ Kai, means “change” or “modify”.

If the original article is true, then of course I don’t intend any disrespect to the PLAAF pilot.
But personally, I tend to be sceptical about PRC military news, unless they are posted at an authoritative site, such as Xin Hua Net and Yahoo! China News.
For example, in late 2004, several PRC regional newspaper sites cross-posted an article that claimed some ROCAF F-16s had defected to PRC, escorted by PLAAF Su-27s. But PRC Netters who read the articles weren’t as daft as one may think, as they wrote such funky comments as: former ROC President Li had joined the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), and current ROC President Chen would declare unconditional surrender tomorrow.

the conformal fuel tanks look like cat ears, IMO.
Maybe the Lockheed-Martin design department has been infiltrated by Hello Kitty fans.

In the Japanese (Japan) news site Yomiuri On-Line, an article dated 2005.04.15 at
    http://show.yomiuri.co.jp/photonews/photo.php?id=6851
has an accident photo that shows the tail number of the MU-2S: apparently 73-3229.

In a Japanese blog, an article at
    http://www.webee.ne.jp/myblog/archives/2005/04/mu2.html
    claimed/mentioned:

The Mitsubishi aircraft called MU-2 by the JASDF, is called LR-1 by the JGSDF.
The JASDF had 29 MU-2J and MU-2S. The JGSDF had 17 LR-1. That is, the JSDF had up to 46 such aircraft, and six of them (13%) have crashed:

    1970.09.02. JASDF MU-2.
1973.04.11. JASDF MU-2, based at Nyuutabaru AB. Four killed.
    1977.06.13. JGSDF LR-1.

1981.08.10. JGSDF LR-1, based at Utsunomiya. Two killed.
1990.02.17. JGSDF LR-1, belonged to 101st Hikoutai. Three killed.
2005.04.14. JASDF MU-2, belonged to Niigata Kyuunantai. Four killed.

Most of the LR-1/MU-2 have been phased out. Before the last crash, the JASDF had five MU-2.

    reported:

On 1 March 2005, the CO of the Touhoku Houmen Koukuutai, OOYAMA Yuuichi Taichou [see below], explained: in a list of 164 [sic] locations of helicopter landing zones during accidents/disasters, maps and photos of the Nakamura Daiichi Middle School were confused with those of the Baryou Kouen Nagatomo Ground.
Although the list was revised in March 2004, they didn’t know the maps and photos, prepared by various people at various times, were erroneous.

(“Taichou” is a designation that means the “captain” or “commander” of an unit, such as the “captain” of a soccer team, and IMO it isn’t necessarily a rank.)

    reported:

The JGSDF had done their homework, after four JGSDF choppers mistakenly landed seven times at the Nakamura Daiichi Middle School (Nakamura First Middle School), in Souma City, Fukushima Prefecture, on 18 February 2005.

On 6 April 2005, the Touhoku Houmen HQ, JGSDF, announced they have investigated all 165 [sic] landing zones in six northeastern prefectures. For the Prefectural Shiozawa Farm Village Square landing zone, in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture; in the relevant 1:50,000 map, its location was off by 1 cm. The indicated location was about 800 m south of the actual location.
