That looks like the nose section at Cosford.

Because the modification did not meet the CAA’s requirements.

The CAA stopped Paul Morgan using the back seat in the Sea Fury so i don’t suppose they would allow the use of that.

Damien, as you mention the Battle of Britain display, i thought it was brilliant but i think it has served it’s cause and it’s about time for something else. That area could be used by IWM to display other significant displays. The Falklands War could have been displayed in there instead of cramming it into the OFMC area. A Korean War display could have been in there for this year, where the Blenheim and Spitfire were diplayed could have been used to display the F-86 and T-33 and anything else IWM have for that era. Then for the future there would obviously be a Gulf War display. Where will they cram the Tornado, Buccaneer and Jaguar for that?

Yep Lancmans right with the Beryl in Bluebird. It was one of the engines from the SR/A1 flying boat that used to be at Duxford and is now i think at Southampton. The engine is on display at Filching Manor Motor Museum in Polegate. When it was restored about 10 years ago it still had fuel in it.

Donald Campbell bought the prototype Gnat T1 XM691 in 1966 and fitted the tailplane and orpheus engine to his boat Bluebird K7. This engine was subsequently destroyed when the air intakes collapsed while doing static testing. He purchased a second engine and that is what powered K7 until her crash at Coniston on 4th January 1967.
As a little extra on Donald, Nevile Duke was one of his best friends and supplied him with his flying helmet which was used for these attempts.

I have finally got the whole set and i don’t think anything comes remotely close. I unfortunately buy all the others at one time or another especially if there is a certain theme of article that interests me. I actually bought Flypast for the 2nd time this year last month.

John Marlin has got the original drawings from Martin Baker and has had full co-operation from them regarding the project. Due to costs he has had to use as much of the P-51 as he could. The replica is 18 inches shorter than the original and it is also being built with a full dual controlled cockpit. John’s original plan was to have it ready and race it at Reno then sell it, but i can’t believe he’ll do that now as it has taken him twice as long as he expected. To help finance the project he sold his airworthy P-51.
He reckons that performancewise it will give all at Reno a good run for their money.
I for one love it, o.k it doesn’t quite look right but who else is going to have ago at building what was most probably going to be the most potent piston aircraft ever.

I’d prefer it if it had a Griffon, or if it was a Mk16 with the Packard Merlin. Coz as with everything, the Americans took a British idea and made it better.

I hate Spitfires, i’m a Mustang man. I love all that highly polished alumminium, not the same old dreary green, brown or grey.

    Bentwingbomber,
I only said add the wingtips because of the photo. Personally the only Spitfires i like are clipped winged griffon engined ones.
