Two important carrier-related news today:
First, 35th shipyard has apparently been selected for expansion in order to substitute PD-50. This will imply a slight delay of the docking but the deadline for the update remains 2021:
Aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov to be docked for further repairs in 2020 — source
Russia’s aircraft carrier The Admiral Kuznetsov, currently undergoing repairs and maintenance at the 35th ship repair plant in Murmansk, will be docked in 2020, a source in the shipbuilding industry told TASS. “The phase of repairs in a dry dock will begin in 2020, provided the facilities required are in place and the dock’s capacity is increased,” the source said.
The United Shipbuilding Corporation told TASS the 35th ship repair plant was in the process of upgrading its dock facilities, which would allow for accommodating the aircraft carrier The Admiral Kuznetsov. “It’s a complex package of measures, so we foresee a certain postponement of the second docking of the ship, but the eventual deadline for completing the repairs and upgrade – 2021 – will remain unchanged,” the corporation said.
Shipbuilding corporation president Alexei Rakhmanov told TASS the aircraft carrier suffered 52 defects, which would cost 70 million rubles to eliminate. He said The Admiral Kuznetsov would have to be docked for a second time. Originally the operation was scheduled for the summer of 2019. After the sinking of the PD-50 dock several options of a second docking were considered and the choice was made in favor of creating the required facilities at the 35th ship repair plant. In April 2018, the shipbuilders signed a contract with the Defense Ministry for doing repairs on the aircraft carrier The Admiral Kuznetsov (project 11435). The then deputy commander of the Russian Navy, Viktor Bursuk, said the repairs on Russia’s sole aircraft carrier began in May 2018 and the Navy hoped to have the upgraded ship back in 2021.
Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on April 9 the share of the repair and upgrade work done reached 25% and was to be completed by the end of 2020.
The Admiral Kuznetsov will be armed with new air defense systems, including Pantsir-M. Power equipment, boilers, pumps, flight equipment, observation and control systems will be replaced.

Second, “sources” report plans for a 70 kT CVN to be developed in Russia starting in 2023:
Russia to start development of nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in 2023 — source
Research and development (R&D) work to create the first Russian nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will start in 2023; it was included in the state arms program. A source in the shipbuilding industry told TASS about it on Tuesday. “R&D work on the new aircraft carrier was included in the operating state arms program by 2027 and will start in 2023,” the source said.
He specified that “the ship will have a nuclear energy unit and displacement of about 70,000 tonnes.” The source did not specify the estimate cost of the work and the period of the ship’s construction.
The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) told TASS that they “haven’t received any design specifications for the given ship from the Russian Defense Ministry yet.” The corporation noted that it did not stop the development of proposals on advanced ships, including the aircraft carrier. “In case of receiving an order from the Defense Ministry, the corporation’s enterprises will be ready to implement it,” the USC added.
The Russian Navy earlier stated that the Russian fleet expects to receive an advanced aircraft carrier with a nuclear energy unit by late 2030. The Defense Ministry noted that the contract to build the aircraft carrier may be signed by late 2025.

The defense Ministry announced a tender for repairs of Soviet missiles
The Ministry of defense of Russia plans to spend 150 million rubles for the repair of Soviet aircraft guided missile of class “air – air”, follows from materials on the public procurement portal.
Only the Russian defense Ministry has placed two bids for “execution of works on repair of aircraft and guided missiles” of the type R-33 (the value of the contract as 94.5 million) and R-27 (55 million).
According to the documents, the R-33 should be fixed until 10 November 2020, and R-27 – 10 November this year. Performers will be determined by the results of closed auctions at the end of may.
R-27 is a Soviet guided missile of class “air – air” medium-range R-33 – long range.
Hmm Looks interesting. However the competition for export would be tough as the “medium” AEW market is atm quite saturated with Western and Chinese products. Mainly Western like Wedgetail and SAAB. Chinese also manages to secure some niche with the ZDK-03. Would be nice alternative anyway in case the customer cant by any means accessing western products but dont want Chinese.
I think any non-aligned country would be very interested in buying a Russian, moderately low cost AEW/AWACS plane, especially if they already use Russian hardware for their air defence. Think how such a plane would increase the defensive potential of countries threatened by high intensity CM attacks like Venezuela or Syria for instance.

I think those are old news about an already signed and mostly completed contract.

So it looks like izd.30 will be about same size as izd.117, which makes sense. A bigger engine will need a LOT of structure redesign which Sukhoi probably wants to avoid. I wonder how the size compares to F119 though. According to TEG, F119 is bigger than F110 since it won’t fit on an F-16.
They say they will be able to retrofit the newer engine in the already built units so definitely no structure modifications should be needed. They know this for a long while, so they have surely planed with it in mind. The flying laboratory plane showed no apparent modification to the airframe or change in dimensions. The pictures taken from the Zvezda special show a great access to the engine and an apparently high level of modularity of the propulsion area. Probably fixing points are the same for both engines, and any external diameter differences can apparently be accommodated by the anti flame tubes / nacelles.

Regarding compared size of F119 etc, I think that info should be already available. Only the 2D nozzle makes comparison a bit difficult, but F100/F110/F119/AL-31F/AL-41F1/izd-30 are all in the same size niche AFAIK. AL-31 like 10 cm longer and thicker than F100, bit higher BPR, roughly same weight and thrust depending on versions.

During the first study in the zero years of documentation on passenger aircraft Il-112 Ilyushin design Bureau found that the projected military transport vehicle will be a few peretyazhelena. But, as in 2010, the topic is closed, in this state, documentation lay before resuming in 2014. About it in interview to the edition Aviation Explorer told the Chief designer of AK them. Ilyushin Nikolay Talikov.
By 2014, KB was reorganised, and there was also a change of generations. The new management at the expense of quality sought quickly release design documentation. The task of weighing the design has gone by the wayside. In the end, the documentation and found the errors and omissions, and excess weight was 2.5 tons.
After serious complaints against the Ministry of defence, the Bureau developed specific activities which are currently implemented in serial production. Was released a schedule approved by the KLA in June 2018. Was issued an internal order for all developers, reducing the weight of the aircraft will be paid a premium. EDO has appealed to all partners-developers, urging them to make every effort to reduce the mass purchase of components.
By the beginning of may 2019 could reduce the weight of the aircraft at 2082 kg 500 kg will be removed in the course of works on modernization of aircraft and equipment, the transition to electric remote control system, optimization of the hydraulic system. This set of measures will allow to reduce weight of the aircraft at 2472 kg. All the updates will be implemented on the following machine (0103), the shape of which will comply fully with all subsequent production machines.
In addition to airframe several peretyagina and turned the engine TV7-117СТ. The developer – JSC “ODK-Klimov” have to reduce the weight of the motor is 90 kg, the corresponding work is carried out. Until the end of the test plane engine weight will be reduced.
All-Russian scientific research Institute of aviation materials (VIAM) is also involved in work to reduce the weight of the aircraft from the point of view of application of new materials. To date, the Il-112V is used quite a lot of composites, mainly in secondary structures, which does not affect the power circuit. The transition plan from duralumin alloys aluminum-lithium, which will reduce the weight of the plane is approximately 150 kg.

Is izd.30 about the same size as izd.117? I think it is because the plan is to replace izd.117 with izd.30 with minimum airframe changes. How fast Su-57 supercruise depend on how the engine is designed. For example if F-22 had F120 engines it can probably supercruise even faster.
What is airflow if izd.117 and izd.30? Both engines are smaller than original AL-41 for MiG-1.44. Don’t know how their size compare to F119.
Dont find the source right now, but IIRC guys from KnAAPO said no big change was necessary in order to go from first to second stage engines, they have been developed to fit both on the Su-57.
I dont have official airflow data for the engines but I have read from knowledgeable people it should be like 120-130 kg/s for the 117. They are indeed smaller than the original AL-41 but very close in size to the F119.
EDIT: I found the source about the compatibility of the airframe with 1st and 2nd stage engines. He adds that already built planes are foreseen to be updated with the second stage engine.
The engine of the second stage “Type-30″ is created in the same dimensions as installed on the su-57 AL-41F1, with the use of the su-35 is unlikely, said the Deputy technical Director of the Komsomolsk-on-Amur aviation plant named after Gagarin Yuri Kondratyev.
”The engine of the second stage are trying to do in the same dimensions, so large improvements in connection with its introduction, we do not plan,” – said Kondratiev.
According to him, the aircraft that has already entered into force, will also be replaced with motors.
”The planes will be supplied with engines of the first stage, because the engine of the second stage only being tested. But in any case, after their testing and recommendations will be further developed in the replacement of the engine in the operating parts,” – said Kondratiev.
https://z5h64q92x9.net/proxy_u/ru-en.en/https/tvzvezda.ru/news/opk/content/201809061155-x4ac.htm
The big modification of the 11711 project has been a surprise. But in retrospective, the director of Yantar said that they could grow up the project up to 14 kT:
“Have the opportunity to increase its displacement to 7 [thousand], 8 [thousand] to 9 [thousand] and even up to 14 thousand tons”, – said Efimov.
He recalled that the Nevskoe design Bureau, the initiative is developing a draft landing craft on the basis of “Ivan Gren”. According to the interlocutor of the Agency, the new ship will be compared to a predecessor to have greater displacement, length and width, will become more capacious. “We need to increase the technical capabilities of the ship and landing capacity, and increase the number of vehicles that can be stored on Board”, – said General Director of “Amber”.
The composition of the air group on the new ship will depend on the tasks that will supply the Navy. “I think that in designing the new perspective of the ship the number of helicopters should be increased. How is will depend on the tasks that will supply the fleet,” – said Efimov.
Earlier in an interview with TASS the General Director of the Kaliningrad shipyards reported that the series 11711 will not continue – it is planned to develop a new project larger displacement. The President of the United shipbuilding Corporation Alexey Rakhmanov also said that the Navy will be built two or three large landing ship “Ivan Gren”, but modified the project.

The thrill is now whether new LHDs will be developed with full flight deck and bigger displacement (and eventually STOVL planes) and what will happen with the carriers and their air wing. Big decisions ahead.
