    Only because US are currently the only country that has refineries set up for Venezuelan crude. But that will change, China is already building their own.

    While aside his political ambitions Huge C. cannot evade the fact that the USA is much closer than China and hence his profit would be much better (especially as his whole spendy policy is linked to the crude oil profits).

    Additionally, he might find out that China is not much a better ally than the USA. China is not likely to commit to Venezuela because they have such an affinity to Chavez but rather because they see advantages for their country, which translates into USD saved for crude oil.
    In the end, the political visions will not be prioritized over the naked economic facts.

    By the way: between the China and Venezuela is the Panama canal, which is officially controlled by Panama, but guess what China’s leadership would bet on this in times of crisis.

    You know, I have a question, a little off topic, but do the other categories (commercial, flight sim, etc.) experience regular pissing contests, arguments, and flamewars like the Modern Aviation category does? Or are we the bad apple of the keypublishing forum?

    Actually, there are really decent threads in this forum, a few key words that stir trouble, in lose order:

    1. USA, any sort of reference to
    2. Soviet Union/Russia, especially their ability to compete with item one
    3. Venezuela, Kookonistan or any other nation having foreign policy disputes with item one, vastly increased discussion-potential when the nation receives/has received arms from item two.
    4. China, in general

    Now you’re getting silly. Of course there’s a US ambassador! What do you think, there’s a war on? Trade continues, Venezuelans buy US products, the USA buys Venezuelan oil, people travel back & forth unhindered. A bit of government ranting doesn’t change any of that.

    Actually, the USA and Colombia are by far the biggest trade partners of Venezuela, while Bolivia and Cuba hardly make it into top ten. It looks stirring trouble with the biggest importers/exporters is the key element of Venezuela’s foreign policy.

    Wasn’t the Tu-28P supposed to be an interceptor for the vast spaces of Siberia? Performance was sacrificed for range, loiter time, & the ability to carry a large radar & long-range, & therefore heavy, missiles, to shoot down bombers coming from over the arctic. I’m not sure it was a mistake.

    The empty weight is given with 24.5t while normal loaded weight is given with 40t. That would allow for about ~13t of fuel or a fuel fraction of .325, which is good but not exceptional. It remains to be shown that the Tu-128 really had a good range/endurance that allowed it to operate at considerable distance from its home bases. The size itself does not necessarily determine the range/endurance.
    The first generation afterburning turbojets AL-7 don’t really promise best fuel economy.

    Except the MiG-25 and 29… The F-14… J-10 etc, etc.

    Oh man, you quote the worst examples.
    If you had said “the F-16″* I would conceded that it sometimes work, but all your examples are essentially fishy:

    • MiG-25: Needed 10 years for service entry and really got mature with update to PD. When finally fully operational its replacement was already flying its first hours.
    • MiG-29: Needed 8 years for EIS, with the first version being an essential compromise between time and capability (the “A” version).
    • F-14: Was not considered as ultimate aircraft until the engines got fixed, budgetary issues made the F-14/TF30 more or less the final version. The F-14 narrowly evaded cancellation in the 1970ies and was reason that F-18 was procured.
    • J-10: Just 15 years of development, copying, inspiring help from Russia and finally an aircraft nobody knows any details of.

    Good for you you didn’t mention the Suchoi 27, too.

    “Great Leaps” don’t work as things are complicated.
    What works is the the great leap in small steps, building something step by step with careful increase in capability, starting with rather simple “Block 1” solutions first and increasing complexity if the systems are understood.

    So development is hard… it starts with things like prototypes and for the PAK-FA that will be next year. A lot of prep work has already gone into the design. Now they will looking at how the real world differs from what they thought it should be and things will be assessed and perhaps even change to make sure it meets the needs of the customer.

    You will see that the “Great Leap Forward” will not work out, as it never works out. Taken past performance as a yardstick, we can even assume that the PAK-FA will run into even more serious problems that will not see it operational before 2020.

    Typical air superiority mission take-off, full internal fuel, full internal AAMs, guns, chaff, flare, no external stuff.

    Assumed 0.35 fuel fraction, 120kg gun ammo, 4 MR-AAM (220kg each) and 2 SR-AAM (100kg each), I see an OEW of ~15t. Less than F-22. In the class of the F-35A.

    Supercruise is just about thrust to weight ratio and aerodynamics… and apart from stealth there is nothing aerodynamically exceptional about the F-22.

    You have no idea, man!

    State of the art is always on a drawing board. The US has no patent on gifted engineers. They have shown their solutions to the world, there is no reason to think that the Russians have tried to adopt the exact same solutions. Comparing the PAK-FA with the F-22 is like comparing the BMP-2 with the AAVP7A1. Both are amphibious but one is designed to operate from the sea and occasionally go on land, while the other is the opposite.

    There is a huge difference between an idea, a sketch/calculation, a prototype and an operational system. The friction involved to get from one to another often escapes notice to not involved spectators, but exactly this friction is what makes operational systems so expensive.

    So the west had high off boresight missiles and HMS in service in 1990?

    An error not to develop&procure those, but according to your own logic and as Western technology was as (or more) advanced, “we” basically could have built them in a single day.
    Anyways, Russian industry was trailing in many key technological areas, although the applied technology not necessarily determines the system’s overall performance (simple example: a machine gun made from titanium would be very difficult to manufacturer, still it wouldn’t be any more lethal than a metal machine gun; however, when another titanium product is needed the party that can produce titanium machine guns will have an advantage)

    Hahahaha… if making an aircraft only came down to calculating power I’d be making 5th gen fighters… A computer doesn’t make you Picasso or Mikoyan or Burt Rutan, or John Browning. The difference between F-117 stealth and B-2 stealth was processing power. Processing power gives curves to stealth and also controls the machines that build the planes… there is no point having a super dooper computer that is precise down to the 1000th of a mm to create perfect stealth if you build the plane in a high school metalwork workshop made with mallets and rivets and wire.

    The key word is “organizational skills”.

    But more discussion would be wasted at this point.

    First of all what makes you think the Russians can’t make a full stealth fighter that can also supercruise? The US made two in the late eighties (YF-22 and YF-23) and todays home computers have much better processing capability than some of the super computers of the 70s and 80s.

    The F-22 is not being exported yet so there is no need for the Russian AF to have the PAK-FA in service… except pride and export sales. The Russians have long had a tradition of getting similar or even better performance from their planes at much lower prices. Even if the PAK-FA costs the same as the F-22 per unit it will be Russians spending money on their own Aviation industry. They might only buy 200 as well and maintain fleet numbers by not retiring the Mig-31 and keeping 300 Su-27BMs and maybe buying 3-400 Mig-35s.

    I don’t give much on opinions about those topics because these are highly biased and often rather based on wishful thinking and pride than on facts (which are rare). I just look at what basically was achieved. And here I see the big nothing since the Suchoi 27. This aircraft was constantly modernized and has now arrived at its ultimate version, just as the F-16F/F, the F-18E/F and the F-15E.
    But apart from that nothing has come out of Russia and your assumption that they are eye-level with US industry is pure speculation. The civil side – although being much promising from a business point of view – has seen continued decline and now has to start pretty much from the scratch to compete with US/European competitors.

    The later Russian designs actually were much more expensive when you look at the relative costs (per unit, excluding development).

    I know some people don’t believe it, but when we look at technology (not performance) the Soviet/Russian industry was trailing 10 years (in some fields more, in some less) behind the US aviation industry in 1990. The 10 years after 1990 were basically a huge loss (in terms of capability as capability declines when it is not maintained). So where do we stand now?
    Russia had secretly spent billions on research and now surpasses US industry with the power of will? Common, that is just plain naive.

    And Garry: if it was the calculation power that let’s things come together, the Chinese must have built an F-22 successor by now (considering that all the laptops come from China nowadays).

    I disagree. They already have a Typhoon-class fighter designed, the Su-35(BM). If that is enough, then why bother with PAK-FA?

    Modernize the Flanker and produce a smaller more versatile aircraft with supercruise and stealth features, probably above those of the Typhoon. As I said, the full eye-level solution versus the F-22 will run into serious problems on either the cost side, or the time, or the technical performance, or the operational suitability. Remember how long the last aircraft that was aimed at a specific US design (F-15) needed to become operational. No operational PAK-FA before 2019?

    On a national level it is more important to bring one new aircraft from requirement status to operational status in order to keep this capability within the industry.

    i’M GUSSING IT WOULD look a lot like the saturn design , a bit of raptor , a bit of f-23 and a bit of flanker thrown in . The basic design is based on computational analysis of aerodynamic laws etc etc and given similarities in requirments (Supercriuse =/> then 1.5 , clean , stealth etc) the design approach can be very similar to what is known to excel in the required envelope ..

    While the achievement of supercruise requires lots of detailed solutions to get down drag in transonic regime. Additionally, it requires dedicated engine technology. Making that all stealthy will add additional headache.

    In the end, you need an aircraft that can be operated by the air force and afforded by the nation, and will be operational within a realistic time-frame. It should be useful to other nations, too. The now a decade old Joint Strike Fighter will need another half decade to become operational, assuming a similar time frame for the PAK-FA it won’t get operational before the end of next decade.

    To be honest, I can’t see this coming. With the F-22/F-35 the USA has set a mark other nations might achieve one day, but will probably not attempt as the associated costs a too high. The USA enjoyed a lead in aviation technology when Cold War ended, and now enjoys an even bigger lead.

    Russia will built a rather conventional aircraft similar in specifications to the Eurofighter Typhoon and rely on other weapon systems to beat stealthy contemporaries, most likely ground based net-centric air defense.

    Sounds like lame excuses to me.. Especially given the fact that with EVERY previous design both sides were breaking their legs with trying to break as many records as possible (remember Streak Eagle, Ye-155 and P-42?)

    The thing is: you probably can’t beat any record with the F-22. At least none that goes into the direction of max speed, max ceiling or time to climb.

    The supercruise ability of the F-22 is very good, but when getting close to Mach 2 the performance will drop. I don’t know exactly how P-42 or Streak Eagle achieved their records, but both will beat the F-22 on top speed.

    So, to achieve a record you have to “invent” a new category that would suit well to the F-22’s performance (which is undoubtedly very good) envelope, but I guess that wouldn’t really be the way to go.
    Additionally, the record hunting is over for more than two decades now. If Airbus really wanted it could also take the record of heaviest aircraft.

    Come on…whit out afterburners , big deal, i mean thats all?? that plane has such huge T/W and cant beat any REAL record?

    Issues with stealth? man what you think , you need supercomputers for that?, that the russians cant reach the “gaussians” (HA!) stealth concepts?, at least on the stealthy field they arent designing a f-117 and to reach the 22s stealth level isnt a great challenge
