    During my education we used only SI system,and we were told that it is the only measuring system that should be used.The fact that here is used imperial system, makes it very hard to understand.

    You get most of the weight and area data in the internet easily. The derivatives, which are the really interesting part of the document, are the truly interesting content. Where else do you find drag data over Mach number for fighter-like aircraft?

    You are painting a brighter picture . The problems that are occuring now were known atleast upto 6 months ahead of time (for some of them) , boeing were tweaking the FCS requirments for longer then they had promised honeywell , so the FCS is late , the fastner shortage was there prior to this aswell . The UNEXPECTED problems for all practical purposes havent even started as of now , they will also come and put pressure on the team . INTERESTING times for aviation enthusiasts ..

    Flight test is bad news season. Sounds like a damn rainy winter is coming up in the Evergreen state.

    In an open offensive battle on Israel soil not much. They are good in hiding and Guerilla warfare, but fighting a real army on hostile ground would be futile. An attack by Syria might be more promising, but using the Golan heights for a strike is quite ambitious, especially given the poor state of the Syrian military forces (air and land).

    If we exclude foreign help in terms of inflight refuelling, no country’s aircraft will reach the other country in number. Maybe Israel may be able with a small strike force using buddy-to-buddy refuelling, but the punch would be limited. Iran lacks information on targets in Israel. They could maybe opt for a PR bombing mission on Tel-Aviv, but really reducing Israels military strength is out of reach.

    A strong support by Syria (for example by allowing Iranian machines to refuel at the bases) would trigger a massive strike by Israel. Turkish and Iraqi airspace would be off-limits for Iranian aircraft after first Iranian aircraft are detected. Turkish and American aircraft are able to completely lock off the airspace.

    That report has a lot of issues IMHO , I KNOW FOR CERTAIN that their arent 1000 types of fastners on the 787 , he got that quote wrong , also regarding further delays carson was pretty confident infact IIRC he used that delay in FF beyond mid december was “VERY VERY UNLIKELY ” so if their is infact a delay expect some Legal action from investors and the SEC to step in.

    The SEC comes along when he lied to people despite better knowledge. I actually think that problems occuring now are to some extent unexpected. That is the nature of flight test. The people at Airbus believed in their delivery schedule, too. There was no consensus that the aircraft will be delayed, just the usual talk of “challenges” and “tight schedule”, so basically the same BS you hear now with the Dreamliner. Nobody truly knows when the B787 is ready for first flight or delivery.

    The F-16s FCS makes 9g a hard limit. The FCS won’t allow maneuvres over 9g, so the F-16 can’t do any maneuvres over 9g. Period. Being a rather lighweight design which has suffered through it’s life from quite a bit of structural issues, i doubt the airframe was designed for even just a little bit more than 9g.

    An Iranian Phantom allegedly survived 14g to come home, being bent and all. With this in mind, i wouldn’t be surprised if a Flanker would be able to come home after pulling 13g – but i wouldn’t expect it to be able to fly ever again, or even be able to remove the engines without any cutting tools…

    I say again: check out definition of limit load. What you write is sadly all wrong. There are some realities in structural design. The F-16 was designed light weight, but it was also designed to handle 9g (in no previous aircraft it was so straightforward to get maximum g out of the aircraft). The F-16 even had a structural health monitoring system.

    This arms shipments is actually confused because they dont mention that the shipment could have been to Iran from North Korea, it could have been North Korean Nukes sent to Syria to hide while north korea gets sanctions lifted.. etc etc.

    The North Koreans failed to test their bomb, never did they develop a tactically/strategically useful nuclear device. And if they did, they wouldn’t sell it. But if they had sold it, the Israelis wouldn’t have tracked a device fitting in a car. So I doubt that was the reason, however, North Korean supplies still might be the reason.

    The best place for canards is … on someone else’s plane.

    J-10 is kinda nice, especially for China it is very nice. (Qualified statement, isn’t it 😉 ). But the formal grace and conceptual clarity of the F-16 it has not.

    The lack of a real threat and real war has led tacair onto strange ways those last 15 years. On of them, that bias against single-mission planes, resulted in loading up the F-16 with 6 tons of a/g ammo and re-modeling it as a fighterbomber, thus keping the design from developing its full a/a potential. But if I’d have to get a country a counter-air capability, I’d still start with a F-16.

    That picture you show, with CFTs. Too much (foreign) money (for military stuff) and not enough sense, these people. Should better buy F-15E for the medium tactical bomber mission. (God only knows for what usage).

    6 tons of a/g ammo would be exactly the best loadout for an attack at Newark International from JFK: short radius, cold climate and long runways. For anything else, the normal bomb load is more around 2 tons.
    The USAF did something right: otherwise they had built the MiG-29A, which is as multirole as the MiG-23M.

    Rostislave Belyakov Chief Designer for Sukhoi stated in an interview that the Su-27 is capable of withstanding 13G’s.

    And always remember that if 9g was standing in the manual, the maximum tolerated load would be more like 14g. Of course with permanent deformation, but some airframes make it to 11-13g without (Mirage 2000, Eurofighter).

    When the F16 entered service in 1978 it was the first fighter to be deliberatly built to sustain 9g turns and is one of the few jets with a thrust to weight ratio greater than 1 giving it excellent acceleration.

    This aircraft is still being built (the Indian airforce are seriously considering it to replace their MiG-21s) and many varients in service with at least 24 countries.

    Why hasn’t anything been built that performs better than this? Is it because in designing this General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin have designed an aircraft that will never be bettered?

    In Russia the new MiG-35 is actually the MiG-29 but with thrust vectoring engines (also called MiG-29MRCA), can this aircraft be improved or have MiG reached the design apex?

    Because:

    1. There are physical limitations, in this case we have trans- and supersonic drag, human capabilities and the high trade off to built something even better. So the investments does not justify the benefit. More agility is too expensive and would cause enormuous trade-off.
    2. The need for agility is actually satisfied with the F-16, more agility does not provide more success in combat.
    3. To have a sustained 13g turn capability a drastic increase in structural weight and in consequence installed thrust, fuel and finally again structural weight. If you don’t make such an aircraft tiny small, you end up with imitations like on the Su-27.

    Apparently it was a strike on Syrian nuclear-related targets, having not one thing to do with Hizbullah, and therefore being a completely illegal breach of Syria’s territorial sovereignty, especially if the bit about commandos being in the country is to be believed. In the spirit of equality, I’d say a strike on Nahal Soreq would be perfectly justifiable in retaliation. Dimona would be equally effective but is in an unpopulated area and would lack the shock value.

    It does also bring to light the fact that Syria’s internal security, to include the air defense network, should now officially be classified as archaic, outdated, and useless.

    The apparent lack of public protest from other Arabian countries indicates that those governments apparently understand the nature of Israel’s strike. If it really was a strike on a “nuclear target”, the other Arabian countries would not really be upset. The Iranian-Syrian-Hizbollah connection is of concern for many Arab states, too.

    The F-16 remains the benchmark for performance in many fields. Some performance was sacrificed over the versions with increasing weight. The F-16 is also exemplary in terms of multi-role. It cannot perform extremely well a2g-duties, but it can do it quite OK and still be a very lethal a2a-fighter.

    The F-16 much more than other fighters focused on useful flight performance and abandoned unneeded capabilities like Mach2+ capability. It convinces with range, punch (6 AIM-9 while still having 3 free wet stations), pilot view, a small but very useful radar, unparalleled performance and generally affordable costs (even for non-Western nations).

    The revolution it started with its flight control system is unknown to most, but the F-16 not only used relaxed stability (which I wouldn’t overrate), but a complete change in the pilot’s control interface and revolutionary approach to pilot handling.

    Considering the way modern jetliners are constructed (long pressurized–i.e. no large holes– fuselage tubes to which the center section is added) I rather doubt that!

    I do agree that the aircraft was a long way from being flyable when it wes rolled out.

    I guess you fasteners to make the landing gear bays. Those were short in supply and landing gear bays are not essential for roll-out. Anyways, I just read it. It may be wrong.
