    Regardless, those three engines are designed for different flight envelopes than your standard turbofan and the static sea level thrust doesn’t tell the whole story contrary to what Mig-23MLD was alluding to.

    I do not thuink the F-14 is a need in 2007, first there are new longer range versions in design of the well proven AIM-120 and second the F-18E armed with AIM-9X canbeat even the Su-30MKI, as long as the US gets a Meteor or the AIM-120D

    Please don’t make it the notorious F-18E vs. F-14 debate. We have had all this s__t.

    Believe or not, the Nazi German V-1 buzz bomb actually entered limited service with the USAF in the 1940s as the JB-2 Loon. Over 1000 were built in American factories, including the Pulsejet powerplant.

    J-93, J-58, and the engine in the Foxbat were all low pressure ratio engines.

    Pressure ratio is for dry thrust, when in afterburner the way of the jet turns and it becomes more like a rocket engine. The J-58 chieves pressure ratio by inlet compression. It is hardly comparable to other jet engines, even those of the MiG-25 are not as much optimized for high supersonic flight. Note that YF-12 and SR-71 could sustain nearly on Mach more than the MiG-25 (~2.4 compared to ~3.2)

    The F-14A is not the best teen fighter in terms of performance and agility, the F-18 is more agile, its TF-30 restricted it a lot, as a whole the F-14 was superb before the 1990s but …

    No intention to compare something. I want to find out if why the Navy went for the F-14 and remained loyal to the design even after many problems surfaced. From today’s perpective, the F-14 has some major shortcomings even for its time (weight, reliability, engine, accidient rate), which would have justified a bail out from the program. But it looks like the Navy was well aware of shortcomings and saw them solved in the evolution of the aircraft (as I said, the A-version of an aircraft never performs outstanding; in Russia anything before the M-version was extended prototyping :diablo: ). But the evolution was cut due to budget constraints.

    Although it won’t achieve ranges quite in the MICA class (under comparable launch conditions) the USN is currently working on a datalink for the AIM-9x plus the BLKII
    rnd will incorporate pre-programmed loft/Loft glide logic. The combination of these two will significantly extend useable 9x ranges (especially when launched from the F-22) though absolute max ranges will probably be under 40km – limited by the existing motor and the power available for controlled flight (mission duration <=60sec).

    However note that whilst in *theory* the 9x seeker closely matches or even outperforms the airframe/motor in *practice* under operational conditions the atmosphere doesn’t behave like a theoretical ideal.Hence adding the datalink actually does make sense (because in practice the airframe/motor are frequently not the limiting factors) and hence the USN remarks about potentially doubling the range (i.e. operationally practicable rather than theoretical range).

    REFS – see my article JM&R (oct 2005) and B.sweetman’s recent (Feb or Mar 07) article in IDR.

    This is interesting, that an inflight guidance via data-link is added to a “short-range” missile. But your points make total sense, that the IR sensor might not acquire the target due to atmospherical conditions and is augmented by other sensors.
    Modern IR-AAMs are quite lethal, so that any advantage which keep one out of the kill radius of an opponent are worth exploiting. With such a missile, an incoming opponent can be greeted with a BVR-IRAAM and the firing aircraft can turn around before the other has a firing option.

    I know that the IRIS-T (IR-AAM for the Eurofighter) has something comparable, to get target information when launched “over the shoulder”.

    The advantage of IR guidance would be that you can also engage stealthy aircraft. I think even a stealthy aircraft like F-35 can be detected, but not sufficient to gain a missile lock. Such a weapon would work best when it is able to receive inputs from several sources, so for example AWACS or other aircraft. Or possible guidance by linked RWR when the stealthy aircraft has its radar activated.

    Rafale pilots also aren’t “short of praise for the shear power of the aircraft”… But this kind of comments, really pleasing, isn’t very interesting in fact… Don’t you think ?

    The pilot in question has experience on various aircraft. But in general I agree. Especially since Eurofighter and Rafale are so close together that even a fly-off would end in the conclusion that “both are good”.

    Foofone is beneath contempt, and his barely comprehensible pidgin English is not worth reading. Insult is the only proper response when he starts talking about Typhoon as a ‘fat mama’ and when he starts trying to deliberately provoke a reaction by insulting the Queen. 😮

    I haven’t read his post as he his proud member of my ignore list. If I took serious everybody around here, I would have blisters on my fingers due to excessive typing. I think the Rafale is a decent aircraft (like nearly all previous Dasault designs), in my opinion sometimes not well acknowleged. The biggest problem of the Rafale: the market, which doesn’t make decisions based on rationale analysis but is very “political” when it comes to fighter procurement.

    I recommend you to put him on the ignore list, too. No insult of the Queen, no stupid commenting on the Typhoon any more, which is without doubt the best performing aircraft besides the F-22 and will – in my humble opinion – will keep this position as no contenders are in view. Had the pleasure to hear a presentation of a German EF-pilot some days ago, he was not short of praise for the shear power of the aircraft, while he also pointed out the excellence of the F-16 when it comes to pure dogfighting.

    You have to look to the starting-point in the 60s.
    It was the F-111, the AIM-54 and related radar to start with.
    A lot of related money was spent already! So what to do? To make the best from that at hand already or to start with something new. In that Cold War times, every year a new fighter saw service everywhere and some upgrades of other ones too. The pace of development was similar to that of the personal computers in the 90s to give an idea about that. If it is for office-work only a 32 Bit PC is still enough most of the time. But none of us did stick to that economical considerations really. So no cheap blames please. –
    The AF had no need for the AIM-54 and could stick to something lighter, what it did. The frontal area of a design had something to do with the radar-dish in those days. Neither the navy nor the airforce people were fools really. The technology advances in the 70s did allow to break the trend of heavier fighters.
    I do remember about the Tu-28P and the MiG-31 of today too.

    Yes, that sounds very reasonable. I guess one has to understand the mindset of the 60ies to get behind these procurement programs.

    What it does not say, is anything about the performance of the F-14.

    The “lightweight fighter” requirement was based upon CAS/Tactical Strike (A-7) and Battlefield Air Superiority (F-4) (protecting CAS aircraft from enemy aircraft), while the F-14 requirement was all about fleet defense. Two completely different mission specs, and the F/A-18A/C/D had nothing to do with fleet defense. The “Hornet” only got into the F-14’s mission field when F/A-18E began to replace the F-14 in the fleet defense mission.

    Really? Why was the “most capable aircraft” unable to fullfill the air superiority mission on its own, especially as fleet defense was a mission that was sized by Soviet capabilies. A war against any other nation would leave the F-14 unemployed, no Badgers to defend against.
    I think the Navy figured out that basing the air to air component of their carriers solely on the F-14A (the letter A is important) would be a gamble.
