You are contradicting yourself. The Tu-128 was a very special thing. The Su-9 had similar shortcomings like the Su-7 (short range, field performance). The F-106 was only effective in its role as ground controlled interceptor and in this role quite effective (proven by its long service time). Short ranged missiles are not really a problem when your opponent does not have any real chances to defend. A MiG-23 (speaking of the earlier versions until late 70s here) entering a defended airspace will be easy prey, its radar insufficient to really give a good situational awareness.
On equal terms (no external radar, no speed or altitude advantage) I rate the MiG-23 superior.
Its rate of climb was OK, proven by it low wing loading, acceptable drag-ratio and the reasonable thrust.
I had no intention to go that deep into analyzing US foreign policy for last 4 decades (fact is that Russians were not better) but the fact that some aircraft has fought in a real war does not automatically render it either good or ‘battle-proven’. The fact stays that a fully loaded Thud had quite a problem even with old SA-2s. I, for one, would rather have taken something less complex, but more rugged, reliable and much more survivable.
As I said: Survivability was not a primary design consideration at that time. The F-105 was a dedicated nuclear bomber with all ingredients. No aircraft used in Vietnam was really designed for such a war. The SA-2 was no really “old” at that time, although it clearly was not the best to intercept fighter aircraft.
I think if there had been real targets to attack, less political inteference and if the whole war in general was not such a mess, the Thud would have come out with a better reputation. Attacks like flown for the 1972 raids are more grateful. The Thud had overally not an exceptionally high loss rate, it was lower than for WW2 designs or over Korea (don’t take this comparison too serious).
We fall back to the one conclusion that nearly always applies: conflict oftenb have so many special conditions that they can hardly used for a prove of design. A Thud on nuclear strike mission was a formidable opponent (like the Su-7 was, too, on a shorter nuclear strike mission).
As a bomber interceptor for the CONUS area the USAF never saw the point of fitting short range AAMs onto the F-106 or F-102, but who really thinks that it would be a big issue to do so, if the USAF felt the ‘Six’ needed them (AIM-9Bs typically), and I can’t see any structural or aerodynamic problems arising, it would take a few weeks design, testing and certification if it came to it! Add on the Sidewinders I’m sure the F-106 has what it takes to be a frontal fighter, when you compare it to the likes of the MirageIII/F1, MiG-21/23, F-4, etc.
Although the F-106 might look somehow capable, I doubt that it would make a good stand. A fighter has several parameters that are essentially different to that of an interceptor. The MiG-23 (early version) was in some regards more an interceptor than a fighter, too. But still I would rate it more capable in a fight on equal terms.
Equal terms are, however, unlikely. If a MiG-23 on offensive meets a F-106 on defensive mission with the normal support by ground radar and short legs to/from base , the F-106 would be in advantage. The same would of course apply the other way round.
All aircrafts mentioned have one thing in common: due to excessive fuel consumption they really need to decide an engagement within a minute or two, otherwise they would not have the fuel to return to base (at least when they are on an attack mission).

A MiG-23BN and most other contemporary attack fighters would have performed equally bad. How do you think a Su-7 would have performed, carrying the frightening amount of 2 bombs to its target, which should be placed rather close to the airbase fitted with close-to-infinite runway. The Su-7 was the counterpart of the F-105.
The Su-7’s combat capabilities were limited. With a tiny internal fuel volume of 2,940 l (647 imp gal), its operational radius, even with drop tanks, was poor – seldom more than about 300 km (200 miles), and it had almost no useful range at all with maximum ordnance. Take-off and landing speeds were also very high, requiring long runways. Su-7BKLs had provision for JATO, but this only made logistics even more complicated, so it was rarely used. An additional problem with early models was that the afterburner took six to seven seconds to light, a handicap in combat.
Regarding the significance of its technology, Thud’s legacy is clear: don’t design overweighted attack fighters with single engine and almost nonexisting hit survivalability.
Really, who didn’t learn the lesson? The Soviets. MiG-27 and Su-17/20/22 were built in thousands long after Rolling Thunder. The lessons learned in Vietnam served future aircraft. Combat survivability was not exactly a design parameter for the first generation of supersonic jets.
The F-105 has a pretty good thrust-weight ratio (0.74), it was very fast. The high loss rate was caused beside the named shortcomings by the high sortie rate, long distance from base and a quite accident rate. The J-75 was not exactly reliable. The F-105 thus represents a classical late 1950s/early 1960s supersonic jet. When did the Soviets had something comparable in their inventory?
Interesting comparison. For the start I must say that the F-106 is kind of illplaced in this comparison. It is a pure interceptor. Against a MiG-23 it wouldn’t make a good stand if both engage on equal terms.
The F-105 is in some terms pretty similar to the MiG-23M: comparable weight, comparable engine thrust. The MiG-23 wins in field performance, while the F-105 clearly wins in carrying capability.
In an engagement the MiG-23 was clearly in advantage as it was designed as fighter. It has in most altitudes a speed advantage.
But both never met on the battlefield. The Flogger entered service when the F-105 was mostly out of service. The F-106 was based in CONUS and no MiG-23 had the range to go there.

What bugs me is when people use the “generation” idea to justify their point in the forum.

Deltas are never good low level, stable but not comfortable. (Except probably the TSR2, but that was a very small delta). Buccaneer and Tornado should be about equal regarding low level stability and comfort, but the Buccaneer had more range.
Interesting, I read several accounts stating that deltas are well suited for low level due to low lift increase. Most important is the wing loading, it should be relatively high. The classical delta fighter has low wing loading (or needed it to become airborne on a finite runway).
Whilst the Tornado was superior tecnologically the Buccaneer had much better low level stability and often it was said there was nothing to match it in the world.
The Tornado has a pitch stability augmentation system, so I cannot really believe that stability is an issue. The Tornado is also a very stable design and with wings swept back stability shouldn’t be an issue.
I actually heard that the Buccaneer is very fast low-level (faster than the Tornado without afterburner), but I have never heard anything about better ride quality.
But is this still the case today or do the more modern fighters, Typhoon, Lightning II and Gripen to name but three have very good low level ride quality to match the Buccaneers?
The named designs have control systems that are 2 generations ahead of those of the Tornado. The pilot does not need to “stabilize” the aircraft. The fast actuators help for quick stabilization. As I stated the most important is the wing loading, so that all modern fighters loose in low-level flying against the Tornado.
Why not? Developement was initiated at the same time and both types entered service nearly simultanously. Both types were designed to replace older types of aircraft nearly at the same time. As mentioned technologies and capabilities aren’t really factors which define aircraft generations.

– list major charcteristics of F-22 and F-35
– mark all that apply to both aircraft
– scratch those that only fit to one aircraft or may vanish during testing
– takes these characteristics, paint them on a big poster and carry it to every layman event.

Typhoon isn’t a stealth aircraft and doesn’t even have AESA for starters.
The funny picture in the beginning said “Stealth (VLO)”. So Lockheed Martin left a backdoor open if somebaody says that F-35 can be detected: It still is “Very Low Observable”.
The funny picture doesn’t say anything about AESA.
The most serious reason for the Typhonn being crappy 4th generation while the hyper-modern F-22 and F-35 are shiny 5th generation is the fact that it isn’t produced by Lockheed Martin.
Supercruise and supermanuever are not 5th generation defining characteristics.
The generation thing is obviously defined by Lockheed Martin tailormade for its aircraft. That is the reason that F-22 and F-35 are fifth generation and no other aircraft is. It is pure marketing with a portion of arrogance.

I love these discussions. A pretty naive question aimed at some information about possible scenarios. Everybody unpacks his own conclusion, normally focussed on his favorite aircraft/weapon/something. So we end up in discussions if the MiG-31 can shoot down an AWACS, how many PGMs the Soviets had (if that would decide a conflict) and which system has which detection range.
The issue is far too complex to give any conclusion. From the pure dogfight performance the F-16s were roughly equal to the MiG-29, but neither were present in excessive numbers. Still F-104s, Phantoms and other aircraft dominated the squadrons while the Soviets were heavily relying on MiG-21 and -23. Air fights would most likely result in massive clashes. I don’t think that dogfight performance would have paid off.
In a conventional conflict the NATO had to be defensive due to lack of equipment, but highly doubtful that a conflict would remain conventional for prolonged times.
Since the original design was aerodynamically unstable, wouldn’t that necessarily mean that the airframe itself would have to be altered/modified for it to suddenly be a stable design? True, the airframe has been tweaked here and there, but enough to negate all of the instability? Sounds questionable to me.
The F-16 was never very unstable, it had “relaxed stability”. The actual shift of CG is small (a few inch), which may be done without big changes. The later F-16models had bigger HTP and stronger engines, possibly a reason.
The comparison of late sub/transonic fighters with early supersonic fighters clearly shows the sacrifice for speed. Aircraft like the Su-7 and MiG-21 are good examples for that.
The comparison of subsonic fighters is less straightforward. The skills of the individuel pilot are much more important. Lack of any BVR-capability and any offensive avionics make engagements a very equal game. We could compare TWR, but that doesn’t really say anything (actually, it never does).
