    I hope your memory will recover. So far, the neutral point does shift with speed.
    A F-16 highly unstable in the subsonic-range is no longer so in the transsonic- and supersonic-range. So it is intresting to learn, why the control-laws were changed and what are the benefits from that. I hope I did not mix it so late!

    The F-16 has “relaxed stability”. That is, the aircraft is not naturally stable. In the area of CG at 0-5% MAC the aircraft is unstable but with quite large doubling times. The phugoid becomes unstable, but the alpha-oscillation is still marginally stable.
    Negative CG results in increasingly unstable aircraft. I doubt that control laws were service-ready in 1974 to build an unstable aircraft with very low doubling time (<1sec).
    As you said the neutral point shifts with speed and AoA, as does the CG with weapons and fuel used up.

    So am I.

    I can only think of:
    – cheaper price (when the mirage was stil available)
    – engine MADE for high speed, so some advanatge while at supersonic speed (which isn’t really common)

    People here often speak of manouverability and supercruise and all that stuff to win an engagement. The Mirage 2000 can achieve higher speeds in BVR-attack and is due to increased G-load more manouverable (until the energy is drained). Radar cross section is also relatively low.
    So it is a useful intercept platform (actually its original task). This job will it do better than any Rafale. The other jobs can be done reasonably.

    I think the appealing fact is the relation between performance and price (procurement & operation). When I had to choose a fighter regardless of cost, the Mirage 2000 wouldn’t be my first choice either.

    We should remember that if a country really want to order new fighters, the maneuverability will be the first consideration out of them, so more powerful engine always being better.

    Wrong! Manouverability will hardly get under the Top 10 of reasons to chose an aircraft. When we reduce it to the performance issues, it possibly gets under the Top 5. Only if it is a showstopper it might be considered more.

    Just about the Rafale, let’s not forget that the Rafale doesn’t come out of nothing… It’s the same company behind, and they’ve learnt even from the Mirage 2000.

    BTW, one of the points I consider important on the Rafale is the integration of electronics, especially regarding the Spectra suit (which can be seen on the aircraft structure itself). This kind of electronic integration has big impact on an airframe, and couldn’t be done easily, I think, on the Mirage 2000.

    Yes, you are right. What fascinates me about the French fighter design is its very unique way – up to the design of the Rafale.
    Most French fighters were very successful on the market: MIII, MF1 and M2000 were all sold in large quantities and met the need especially of small air forces. I don’t know what went wrong with the Rafale, but it is very very unlikely that the Rafale will achieve a similar success, I actually even doubt that they ever score a major sale and will shelf the whole program in a few years.
    Dassault went in a interesting direction with the Rafale by making it smaller than the Eurofighter and take out some requirements (supercruise), but I think if they had build something simpler/smaller it would have helped.

    Between Eurofighter, F-16, JSF and Gripen it is misplaced.

    I agree that the Rafale offers more manouverability, more multi-role, easier handling and can call itself “4th generation”. But, is it superior in the end? From the pure performance point of view (avionics are interchangable) the Mirage is actually superior to the Rafale in some areas. Manouverability is worse, but I doubt that this is of importance.

    The Mirage lacks the proper engine. Especially is it basically an upgrade of something that was never intended as multi-role.

    I don’t want to say that the Rafale is no advance, my point is: When one would design a Mirage 2000 today with up-to-date engine, avionics and flight control integrated from the start, the lack in performance resulting from the tailless delta would be small.

    Does anyone know the empty weight of the multirole Mirage 2000-5/9? I guess the enhanced capability does not come for free.
    Also, what about price of the Dash 5 compared to the Rafale (which is vastly superior in every aspect imho)?

    edit: OK, I have found 7500kg for the 2000 and 7900kg for the -5

    7.9 tons is my info, too.
    You must consider two things:
    – it is still 1 ton lighter than standrad F-16C
    – it is faster than most available jets (not by itself an advantage, but some people may want it)
    – it is known for very rugged structure and didn’t show any fatigue problems, something the F-16 cannot claim
    – it is 3-4 tons lighter than a MiG-29 while having mostly similar capabilities

    Under the Mirage 2000 the only available designs are the SAAB Gripen and possibly the FC-1 and T-50 (but both 20 years younger).

    The Gripens twr is not that great with the rm12 so the ej200 would be a good option imho. The ej200 is a much newer design and theres still a lot of potential in it (120kn+) whereas the rm12 is at the end of its life cycle.
    A Gripen with 12 tons of thrust would be a real monster. 😎

    Like always some people in this forum tend to focus on maniverability first and forget other things about it. The fact that the Gripen is able to achieve Mach 2 with a lower TWR than some American designs (incl. F-18) shows the aerodynamic benefits of the design. The TWR is surely not the best in the world, but it is sufficient. There is no need for “super-manouverability”, so designers re-think.
    Fast is that the Gripen with its current engine is a marvelous machine: very low weight, high capability, true multi-role, easy maintenance and handling, very competitive flight performance. It is not the best performer, but for the customers in question it is not of importance. When you see how much some designs sacrifice for the extra deg/sec, you doubt that it was worth it.

    Unfortunately, the Gripen (like the M2000) lacks the backing of a powerful nation to achieve sales in the market. Instead air forces buy crappy used F-16 or horribly expensive new F-16C.

    I have read elsewhere (can’t remember the source – sorry) in an interview with an M2K pilot that the M2K has a lower sustained turn rate than an F-16C. He said that he thought this of little importance, since no sensible M2K pilot would allow himself to get into an engagement where it mattered, & the F-16 should not be able to force such an engagement.

    Especially because the Mirage 2000 is significantly faster than most other jet fighters, the advantage above the F-16 and F-18 is particularly large. The instantaneous trun rate is exceptionell, but the Mirage loses energy very fast and does not have the best thrust to weight ratio.

    The end of the Mirage 2000 is very sad and I think that its performance versus its price/complexity/weight makes it good value for money. The M2000 convinces with long airframe life and reasonable maintenance. The dash 5 is truly multi-role and beats the F-16 in some mission profiles. For India I think the purchase of the whole Mirage 2000 line would make sense.

    I found this website to be very interesting. The author is comparing the Mirage to F-16 and F-18. He surely is biased, but the remarks he makes have some truth.

    Please note that all this max turn-rate blabla is only of secondary importance. Yes, I said secondary. Although people on this forum tend to rate fighters after their turn rate, it is not that important when other things are good. A Mirage with state-of-the-art IR missiles is a very tough contender for any fighter (not talkingof BVR here).

    The Mirage appeals by its low empty weight and very competitive high-speed performance. The -5 is apparently very multi-mission capable, however, the payload-range seems not to be too attractive with a real bomb load and under combat conditions.
    Anybody numbers apart from the usual wiki-stuff?

    This thread needs some schooling on aircraft pitch trim, specifically, how it is done on tailed and canard aircraft. The NASA tutorial in the link gives a basic explanation of pitch trim.

    So really what’s the point of aerodynamic design now? It has become moot in the face of magic bullets. You can design an airframe with less considerations for maneuverbility now, put priorities in radar cross section reduction, more space inside to put electronic stuff, considerations of easy access and maintenance, considerations for ruggedness, reliability, airframe life. The product will fly like crap once it’s done. But put a big honking motor, TVC, fancy helmet and fancy missiles, and you’re all set to go with your next wonder fighter.

    The perception that “aerodynamics don’t matter that much any more” are completely wrong! Only a well designed aircraft will fullfil its requirements. You can achieve a lot with second class aerodynamic design but you put your performance at stake. Look at the F-18E.

    I agree that canards or not are more a decision. I think that canard aircraft offer a basically better option for agility, but the offset of other designs is small. It is a decision that people make in the design process. In the definition phase of the Eurofighter everybody was after canards. Today things look different, but the design of EF and others proved well. Let’s remember that the technical possibilities in the early 80s were not the same as today.

    This “staibility thing” is very tricky (thanks again djcross for his useful post). The X-29 had highly negative stability margin (about -0.25 MAC) and the control system design was very tricky. There are hard limits about how unstable aircraft can be. Beyond a certain point several issues will make control design impossible.

    The long canard looks good on paper, but brings a truckload of problems for the real-world design. In my mind only the XB-70 had a proper implementation.

    So does conventional design. The forward wing will influence the wing behind it. The tailplane is in the downwash of the main wing. The canard has the inherent advantage that you have full pitch authority at all AoA.

    After all, canards are by itself no major advantage when looking at the total system performance. But I think they look cool.

    multi layer vortex generators.

    The first being the chine nose that at just 3° AOA; generates a votrex, redynamized by strakes above inlets, themselves redynamized by wing apex.

    The diamond wings is better for that, having aft MAC section with flow inwards thus decreasing induced drag, light sinned structure wings, compression lift on the lower part of the fuselage.

    With a useful vortex seperation starting at 3° AOA the aircraft would be an aerodynamic wall, quite draggy. Maybe there is a vortex, but it doesn’t have much energy.

    why have TVC if it is just as agile without it it

    I believe it helps flight performance at high altitude (reduce use of control surfaces) and in sustained turnings.

    And you get useful results without it. The agility of the F-15 in most speed/altitude regimes is OK although it can be outturned by F-16 and Su-27/MiG-29. But it is pointless to invest so much money in a relatively unimportant feature.
