Normally, if an aircraft can go Mach 1.1, it can also go Mach 1.6. But there may be exceptions (many aircraft , especially those with high sweep, have their drag peak at M1.2ish).
Maneuverability data is difficult to obtain. You get some from flight manuals, of which many can be downloaded on file share. Western aircraft are easier to get than Eastern, as many things are published. I don’t know of a book that put fighters next to each other, also because people familiar with flight performance and aerial combat know how pointless such comparisons are. The key advantages of an aircraft in en engagement can normally much better be explained using plain language, in case of the F-4 versus MiG-21 it is the better low speed performance of the -21, with the Phantom having the upper hand at higher airspeeds and Mach numbers.
MiG-19 versus F-100: Both ugly, both difficult to fly. Theoretical performance is one thing, the ability to exploit this in a tactical situation is another.

Actually, when you have a healthy cross-wind the seperation can be reduced to the usual 3nm irregardless of aircraft type. The strength of the wake vortex is not linearly connected to aircraft weight, and its dissipation changes with weather conditions. Under some circumstances very stable vortices can form.

I am sure “Greese” was a typo. I would never believe that a 2nd German in the same forum would have so serious problems with Greece.
If Greece wasn’t a member of euro and the EU, it would a be a poorer country, that wouldn’t be at risk of default though, just like most countries in the world that aren’t in EU and euro and simply printed money, because it would have devaluated the currency and had become more competitive to the fields of tourism and shipping , instead of having to play with rules made in Brussels and an extra strong euro, that brings export difficulties even to Germany and yesterday the ECB asked China to appreciate the yuan, in order for the EU to be able to compete with chinese products and of course China declined…
Strong euro = tourism outside euro area dropping, transport for non euro area countries dropping. With economic crisis, both drop for euro zone too.
The real problem of greek economy though is tax evasion and public overspending. These two alone, are more than enough to cover the deficit in 1 year.
If Greece wasn’t in EU, it would also mean that Greeks wouldn’t have the money to buy too much german products , so the current 2:1 trade exchange in favour of Germany, wouldn’t exist and Germany would have to find someone else to buy their products. For example in the past year, one of the measures that the greek goverment took , was to abolish the circulation taxes on every imported car for some months. This was partially a way to warm back the car industry in Europe.
German car industry warms up–> German economy restarts –> german economy boosts production-> greek shipping transports german goods again and german tourists have again money to spend —> greek economy grows.
The EU took Greece for two reasons. The shipping and the geographical position (passage towards Asia, exit to Aegean sea ports).
For similar reasons the european MoDs are asking the “unofficially dead” …eerr… i mean bankrupt, colleague of theirs to buy quicker and more.
The problem is that with the “if” you can’t go on. The EU has every reason to be upset with Greece, if you ask me, the EU should have pressured Greece to make reforms much earlier. The problem of Greece isn’t the economy itself, but the political establishment that is worthy of african country (i hope african countries won’t feel too insulted by the comparison) and only now will do some of the things that should have done a decade ago.
Fortunately, because the greek economy has more resources that those actually used by the goverments over the years, my prediction, contrary to Prof. Sens, is that Greece won’t go on default like Iceland or Dubai did, for the reason that now they are taking measures to increase income and reduce public wasted money. Oh , and this will be done without taking back Hochtiff’s EU money. :p

Why did Greece participate in the Euro in the first place, when it apperently only yields disadvantages? We (=Germany) don’t dial the Euro exchange ratio, we would prefer a 1to1 exchange ratio with the USD, too.
Anyways, Greece didn’t do its homework, suffering from bad government. That doesn’t mean I have any specific prejudices against Greek people, I know a few. But the budget policy of the federal government is a catastrophe.
From you official trade deficit you have to deduct the money that German tourists spend in Greece. Given the low trade (in total numbers), that should compensate a bit.
Anyways, bashing Greece these days is justified, which doesn’t mean I wouldn’t prefer to praise Greece for performing above average economically. We are all “Euro”, so the downfall of the one also affects the other. Do something about it!
I am concerned that when I see German economic growth and budget numbers (which are ugly), but still we seem best performing nation (of the legacy nations of the Euro zone, not considering some smaller countries with impressive economic and budget numbers, like Denmark for example).

Sure, they don’t differ so much in design, so the load paths are similar. Structure is designed for ultimate loads, that is maximum load in service with a factor of 1.5 added. So, when flown carefully there are plenty of reserves.
The ALOHA flight crew didn’t exercise a 2.5g pitch-up or a hard landing, which normally designs the forward fuselage upper shell (and pressurization wasn’t an issue any more).

My point is this: an airplane that is entirely computer controlled- there are so many software operations that the possibility of one small error that could lead to a catastrophic crash one day is frightening, since all it needs is a missing comma in a line of software. Computers are swift idiots. At least have one “old fashioned” backup. I have personally seen a 727 land with all the hydraulics blown out as well as one of the elevator cables, all that was left was one elevator cable. The Intel Pentium had inherent errors. Windows Vista was a disaster. If I had the choice of purchasing an aircraft, I would certainly go for the one with a proven track record over one that is claimed to save a few pennies in fuel. Maybe the economists know better.
The A380 uses technology which is certified since 20 years, and it works quite well. The biggest problem is when people switch to Airbus aircraft and are not entirely familiar with it. Unfortunately, the quality of the flight crews differs dramatically.
The A380 is – in my point of view – currently the safest aircraft when it comes to flight controls. It can fly with all hydraulics lost, it can fly with all computers down. Basically the same as manual reversion on the old Boeing, while you can’t use such system on such large aircraft (guess why the B747 has 4 hydraulic systems).
Greece is a flight hour from Africa, but its budget planning looks more and more development-country like. If Greese wasn’t member of the Euro Group and the EU, it would have severe difficulties getting hands on any fresh cash.
So, stuff it, I doubt they wil buy anything near or mid term.
The A350 will surely be delayed, and United might have an option to cancel without penalty. Additionally, they surely got sweet discounts on the A350. And the B787-9 is too small for some markets.

For a fighter a tandem seat is clearly of advantage, even with modern equipment. The view out of the window still is important, and in tandem config the rear seater has an unmatched field of view of the rear hemisphere.
Varig possibly had different maintenance culture than let’s say Lufthansa. But I strongly doubt that is a factor in this accident. “Bad maintenance” normally reduces operational readiness and causes head-ache in the airline operations department. Airplanes rarely crash due to “bad maintenance”.
The fact that this start-up airline from Africa got an ex-Varig aircraft tells that the resale value isn’t that great (while no freighters sells very good lately).
Apparently the autopilot didn’t work, which meant they were not RVSM compliant. The autopilot not working can be due to several problems, I don’t think that “navigational issues” were the reason.
The list of MD-11 on airfleets reads like the list of a platoon after heavy combat. The phrase “written off” can be read quite often. I think the MD-11 remains on of the most dangerous aircraft of our times. At least it mostly flies boxes.
This one is a bit strange though. 4000m runway. Either a weight&CG issue or wrongly calculated take-off speed (while I doubt that).
840 is a tough call, even for an A380. That would require an average seat pitch of about 30″. On the plus side: unmatched operating cost per available seat mile and very low fuel consumption.
