I think David is right – the we retrieved the tailplane from a Scottish estate and understood that the aircraft had either been mocked up for a crash scene for a film or tv series or blown up for one – no idea what the film/tv series was –

Would you chaps mind if we used the photos on this thread for our in house beech restorations newsletter?

    Cheers

    TT

Okay for mine! Don’t mind anyone using my photos from here, as long as they are not exploiting them for money.

And I must say that Albert did very well indeed. Great to see a shot of the Beech in happier days. As for interested in a Riley Dove, when a Beech 18 is in the frame, not really. 😉 😀 By the way, what kind of Scanner do you use? I am going to buy one tomorrow, and judging from price, the reviews I’ve read, and what it does I am leaning towards a CanoScan 5200F. Hmmm, looks like those long Norwegian evenings will be spent scanning all my old slides. 😎

Thanks very much! Scanner is an EPSON1200 PHOTO PERFECTION with slide adapter. I’ve had it for a few years and am very pleased with it, although there are now several of equal quality on the market at very cheap prices.

Albert challenge time again….goes to slide archive, scans G-ATUM at Biggin Hill in May 1966 and uploads….voila!! :p If anyone’s interested, that’s a Riley Dove conversion, G-ASUW, behind.

Albert, I think the choice of Norwegian colours was accompanied by some folding money, generated by a Norwegian TV movie, which the Shuttleworth needed at the time. I’m sure one of the SVAS members can give you chapter and verse so if the numbers come up on Saturday night you could contibute to a restoration to RAF colours?

Absolutely right, but that was several years ago! I was talking to Chris Morris, Shuttleworth’s engineer, about this during the summer and he told me they were planning to repaint the Gladiator in a RAF Malta camouflage scheme this winter…so we will just have to wait and see!

Re the BBMF aircraft, at least they retain their RAF identities including correct serial, although regularly change markings. I think the most significant warbird tragedy is seeing the Shuttleworth Gladiator flying in bogus Norwegian colours! I don’t mind if squadron markings are changed as long as the aircraft retains its correct nationality and serial number. I long for the day when the Gladiator returns to being L8032 and in RAF markings!

I remember seeing G-ATUM at the Biggin Hill Air Fair in May 1966, but looking at the state of it ten years later, it could well be scrapped now!

I think it was found at Wigton,Cumbria in 1962 and recovered by the Solway Aviation Society who passed it on to the RAFM. From what I remember if was brought by a local farmer in the late 30’s and was stored in his barn. The farmer passed on and it was then discovered and the local society was contacted. But I might be wrong  .

Almost right, it was actually still on RAF charge when placed in store in 1938(by the RAF, not a farmer) and spent the early war years in a succession of maintenance units until 1943.It was then given the maintenance airframel number 1764M and was issued to 1546 ATC Squadron for use as an instructional airframe. It was then stored in the late ’40s(by a farmer?) and rediscovered dismantled in a barn near Carlisle by the Solway Aviation Group.
After that, it was presented to the RAF Museum and refurbished by 19 MU at St.Athan, being completed in 1968. I first saw it outside in the rain at the Biggin Hill Air Fair in May 1968 and it was moved to Hendon in 1972.

Only 54 Days until the First Rearwin Flight!

Don’t wish to steal your thunder but I think you’ll find Melv will fly it secretly before that, rather than be under a lot of pressure to fly on the day with everyone watching!

if you ever see a double video, altho i suppose it will eventually get onto dvd, of farnborough “the glory years” or some such title, get it! its of all the old cine film taken during the week, with a fair bit of air to air filming too…amazing stuff…thanx for sharing!!

It is already out on DVD at an amazing price of just £4.99 on e.bay. I’ve just replaced my VHS copy and looking at the VHS copies being sold(or rather offered for sale) on e.bay, so have many other people.

Who mentioned 1948? The period was 1958-1966 and who mentioned profit….but perhaps the worldwide sale of 444 Vickers Viscounts perhaps might be worth mentioning, or all the Hawker Hunters that served worldwide, or all the Avro 748s…do you want any more? Have you been to what is called the Farnborough ‘Air show’ in the last couple of years??? It just doesn’t compare to the period I mentioned.

Give it a few years and the number of museum Hunters wearing spurious Black
Arrows schemes should just about cover the whole team ! Seems a shame when the Danish Hunter at Farnborough looks quite pleasing in genuine colours.

Quite agree….the one at Brooklands looks very nice also!

Well in MAM’s defence they have an F.6A in an accurate scheme, which is in the queue for a repaint. The F.4 is just a gutted shell, so it’s basically in use as a ‘crowd pleaser’ hence an aerobatic team scheme rather than the Danish colours (which it had worn previously anyway, and which were pretty dull!).

So you’re saying that if a museum aircraft has no interior, that makes it okay to paint it in false colours???….hmm, okay tomorrow we’ll paint the F-100 pink to ‘please the lady visitors’, as there is no engine in that??? :diablo:
