Willy :
Many thanks…yet another one for my collection ! Coincidence because I visited BRU in 1958 (on a school trip!) and well remember the Sabena S58s flying around – BTW have yoiu seen the other current thread about them ?Albert :
Just been to TAHS, what a little goldmine ! Have bought the Eagle book, also British Independent Airlines 1946-1976, thanks for the tip ……so plenty to read instead of finding liquid libation tonight
DC
Great I have both those books, which are the best references you can find on BE. Great friends of Tony & family at TAHS, always very helpful and knowledgable! Ah,happy memories of the comings and goings of Eagle…….
That’s a shame and it has the wrong shape nose for the KAL Connies, which had the original radarless nose as per this shot taken in the early ’60s at Hong Kong.
Personally, I don’t mind where it goes, or who buys it, as long as it is looked after and kept flying. I really like the idea of perhaps seeing it make a European tour in Korean Airlines livery for a change, as I’m sure the MATS scheme has been seen and photographed to death!
British Eagle pics.
Here is Dove G-AROI. This is one of many photos in the excellent book “The Eagle Years 1948-1968” by David Hedges, published by The Aviation Hobby Shop at West Drayton and currently available from them.
Yes, thanks for that Willy! I wish every aircraft type had its own website like that.
By different powerplants do you include ex-Shackleton Griffons in Spitfires?
Are you talking the right mark of Merlin for that mark of a particular aircraft?
Just interested, is all…Flood
No, would you know if a Spitfire had its original Griffon or a Shackleton’s Griffon in it? If the sound and handling qualities are the same, then that’s good enough for me! Can you tell the difference between Marks of Merlin? I can’t! One Merlin Spitfire sounds just like any other!
For me, if an aircraft has its original engine and most of its original parts, that’s good enough for me to call it an ‘original’. It’s obvious that an original aircraft will have to have replacement parts at some time. Look at the DH88 Comet racer, G-ACSS, at old Warden. Although much of it is fibreglass, it has its original engines(as far as I know) and there is enough of it to be ‘an original’. I hate replica aircraft that have completely different powerplants, which give the aircraft different handling qualities and different sound( Fairey Flycatcher replica with a Beaver’s engine), Vickers Vimy replica with RR Continental engines etc. Anyone else have thoughts on these?
here’s a point. How many of the Original Gee Bee’s still flying 😉
The replica’s therefore must be safer 😉
Oh and hey, some of them Cessna’s are now Antiques 🙂
Not so, I think the illustrated replica has since crashed! Perhaps someone can confirm this?
The final cringe for me comes near the end, when two Anson C.Mk19s taxi in with the survivors on board
Of course we shouldn’t let Albert loose near an aircraft with cleaning materials, lest he clean the top deck colour off and replace it with something else 😉
…who do you think you are, my Tutor, or someone???? :dev2:
I only live down the road in Swindon, but there just aren’t enough hours in the day. However, I would do anything for a flight in the Hunter, as long as it doesn’t involve drink, drugs, s*x, or money….well, drugs or money anyway   😉
Yes Roger, it’s a shame it’s actually an airline variant with all those windows and would look much nicer restored back to its original SABENA livery. It was actually Belgian AF B15/OT-ZKP and here it is in its previous scheme and in its original SABENA livery as OO-SHP
If I’m correct, this is a ex Belgian Air Force craft. Does anyone recall the belgian serial it had?
J.V.
I think it must be Belgian AF B15/OT-ZKP as I think that’s the only surviving former SABENA machine with the extra passengers windows and was OO-SHP.
So many people come up to the fence and ask me for a flight. Conversely, how many have actually come up to me at the fence just to volunteer to help me get the oil and bugs off? Er..less than one……
HP
…err how about a deal – I’ll volunteer to clean the oil and bugs off…………for a flight? Don’t have a Magister in my log book……..yet 😉
I’m sure you do, but he was a Group Captain!! :p
Yeah, but I’m modest!
