Charging a fee £10 is reasonable for a photo day would be an excellent idea. I cant see it happening though. In the Trident and Comet hangar there would be so much other stuff to move out of the way first it would take weeks to get everything else moved. In ‘Propliner’ magazine some years ago there was a picture of the TWA Constellation parked outside and it looked superb.
Thanks Ian, that was MY photo (we know eachother!) which was way back on 9th Sept.1985 when John Bagley was Manager. He invited me up there when the aircraft were being moved from one hangar to the other!
It’s all about money! Since the Government decided that the London aviation museums should have free admission, Wrougton comes under this heading also, as an annex to the London Science Museum. They can’t charge to go in and gripe about having to even pay staff on their Open Days. Those aircraft NEVER venture outside since Ross Sharp left as manager of the collection. He took over from John Bagley, who recently died and both were aircraft enthusiasts and got things done. There was also talk of a Viscount being acquired from Southend. The trouble is, there are no aviation enthusiasts that can do anything there that would not cost the Science Museum money. I would like to see the DC-3 put back into its original United Airlines colours, as I believe this is the oldest surviving DC-3. Friends of the DC-3 volunteered to repaint it for nothing, but the Museum refused on the griounds of material costs. That just about says it all and with no initiative to raise funds, nothing will change. I have tried to get individual aircraft pushed outside for photography, but I was quoted £125 for the Gnat to be moved 20 feet outside the hangar! VFWE has also not been held there again due to the beaucratric attitude of the Museum and ridiculous fees charged to use the airfield. This is NOT the way to do business or raise money. If they pulled all the aircraft outside for a Photo Day and charged a reasonable £10 per head, THAT is the way they would raise money! Am I being unreasonable?
This is all about money!! We have Vulcans preserved all over the country and now £2.5m has been allocated by the Lottery Heritage Fund to get XH558 flying again – what a waste! We have one sole Beverley left in existence and if only a little of that money had been allocated to it, it could have been transported to Elvington without all this fuss and worry about who outbids who.
🙁
Re Trident fund raising.
If you can sort the security out with BAA and BA, suggest fence off an area round the Trident, and organise a ‘Trident photo day’ to raise funds. I for one would gladly pay £10 to take some photos and have a look inside. Anyone else interested?

Best aircraft
All these Flankers are just so BORRRING!! Single modern fighter aircraft with no history or character that sounds like all the rest!
Here’s something that has grace, character and a unique sound and can land on land or sea;)
OFMC aircraft
As far as I’m aware, nothing has been SOLD, just loaned to Wanaka for a while, possibly only for a year. Ray Hanna being a New Zealander has connections down there and he has loaned some of the fleet for their air show. Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll see them back before long;)

That Mitchell is a new one on me…:eek:Flood.
The Mitchell was certainly there when I visited in 1997, parked with the A-20 Havoc and Li-2, as I recall. They were all in much better condition then and look as though they need a repaint at least!:(

humm – unlikely, I’ve never been to Abingdon.I should look at these things before posting!!
It’s an 80 shaped formation, of 21 propeller driven aircraft – that look like they might be Spitfires – or possibly Tucano’s – they’re too small for me to distinguish! Probably taken in the mid ’90’s.
RIAT Fairford
At the tender age of 8, watching the “Black Arrows” beat the looping record with 22 Hunters at Farnborough in 1958.
Watching a Vulcan ROLL at Farnborough in 1960, I think!
Abingdon Battle of Britain Day 1963, the Belgian “Red Devils” Aerobatic Team with four Hunters do a cross-over from all four points of the compass and meet in the middle….L O W !!!!
Badminton Air Day 1989 – the Chilean “Halcones” Pitts Specials
did exactly the same thing but from beind a hangar so they couldn’t see eachother until the second they all crossed!!!
Heart-stopping moments!
….having my hair parted by a Red Arrows Gnat at the end of the runway at Biggin Hill – 1968 I think!
All are still flying in military colours, but privately owned
WK609 is now G-BXDN and still flies in its military markings from Booker.
WK517 also retains RAF markings and is G-ULAS (University of London Air Squadron?) based at Denham.
WB697 is G-BXCT based at Wickenby.
