Whilst doing this, it would be a good idea to identify which are actually ‘Sea’ Furies and which are Fury ISS variants (ex Iraqi) with fixed wings and no arrestor hook.
( But you’ve got to admit it looks the dog’s whatsits in white!)
.
…….so would the Vulcan !!!!! 😉
Interesting, I always wondered where the tail pipe on XA699 went to? Here is my earliest shot of her at Cosford on 23rd August 1971 when used as a training airframe by No.2 STT. The tail pipe was intact then, so I guess it got removed during the ‘training’. Interesting to note that the nose cone was bare fibreglass colour? The second shot is the first time I saw her at MAM on 31st March 1989, devoid of tail pipe!
Don’t take umbrage so quickly John. Rob’s fishing like mad here but nobody’s taken the bait yet! 😉
To answer part of your question – the thing was bare metal for its initial test flights I believe and was painted overall yellow when it moved onto “real” research flying. It never flew in a white scheme. (But now, dozens of anoraks will say it did ‘cos they’ve seen a picture of it painted white, innit! Gods bless ’em)
As for flying supersonic, don’t know. But it had a Nene jet engine! 😉
.
…so we have to be positive and that this ‘white’ finish is just an undercoat for the real yellow final coat…………please say YES Les? 😮
Trying to keep all my balls in the air at once has always been my problem! (oor, er, missus! ). By that I mean burning the midnite oil with too much aviation – photography, modelling, writing articles…and another book…doing reearch for model companies…keeping friends happy, trips to the post office, to air shows, airports, museums. Somewhere amongst that lot comes eating and sleeping and holding down a full time responsible day job. Then the lure of the PC gets all too much and I switch off, cuddle up with the cat on my lap and wiffy beside me and watch a solid evening’s TV….ah, sanity returns!!! 😉
Can we establish just exactly WHICH Andover(s) we are talking about as everyone is saying ‘it’ and ‘she’ yet no one has quoted a serial. As far as I know, Andover C.1 XS606 is still operated by ETPS, XS596 is still operated in ‘Open Skies’ titles (but not painted Raspberry Ripple) and I wonder if C.1 XS646 and HS748 XW750 are also still airworthy?
Kemble today
Super weather for Delta Jets 10th Anniversary Open Day today. Good to meet several forumites and thought you might like to see a taste of what was there. As you can see, I found the Bristol Aero Collection, now sharing half of an Airbus storage hangar at the extreme south of the airfield.
Thanks for clarifying the situation Tom. I was at Kemble today and asked your Devon crew giving joy flights about this and they were shocked, as they knew nothing about this! 😮
The Bristol Aero Collection will also be open for the first time this year in its new home, hangar E2 on the Southern edge of Kemble airfield. Admission will be free, and donation boxes will be around the hangar to help make up some of the lost income from being closed during the summer! This was a result of various H&S problems, flooding etc. As a bonus the cockpit of Bolingbroke RCAF 9048 has just been moved up from Filton, and no work has started on it yet. The rest of the aircraft is in storage at Filton pending restoration.
Andy A.
Andy,
I am probably not the only one that is not familiar with the hangar designations at Kemble. Please can you explain where hangar E2 is in relation to the previous hangar that the Bristol Aero Collection was housed in? Hope it is less crowded as photography was almost impossible before?
Thanks
There is no flying display as such, but admission is only £5 on the gate. Should be a good gathering of jet warbirds with FOUR Canberras, lots of Hunters and Jet Provosts lined up + more!
What is the last photo? Is that another Hind brought back from Afghanistan?
Am I seeing things, or has that Spit got MH434 written below the tail flash?
With clipped wings?? It’s actually MJ271 painted as ‘MH424’.
What’s the Dutch Spit doing there? I’m surprised one of our regular ‘Duxford sleuths’ has not mentioned this before?
I was told that the DC-6 at Deanthorpe was ‘vandalised’ whist parked there?
Obviously nothing serious to make it unairworthy!
Just finished watching the “Red Arrows” selection procedure on BBC1, during which I think our delightful lady presenter needs to do more research. We were told that “during the 1940s, the skies were awash with aerobatic teams”….and “The VC-10 is the fastest transport aircraft in the world”…hmm! 😮
