I’ve wanted to say that for some time now! It’s an easy fix… Such a shame that they haven’t sorted it yet. She would look stunning if her paint had a little touch up! What sort of paint would they use on an aircraft like that?

A 1000 aerosol cans of Halfords Appliance White might do the trick, if they decided to repaint her in the 1960s overall white delivery scheme….I wish!

Is that this month’s £50,000 quota used up? 🙁

An obvious place for her would be at Boscombe anyway!!

I wouldn’t want it to go there. The museum has no room and any complete aircraft are just left outside to the elements. Also visiting has to be by appointment and no photography is allowed. Wherever she goes, it MUST be kept inside! I would vote for Cosford to join their collection of Meteors.

Don’t throw it away. What I do is buy the paper in the main WH Smith here in Hull, when its busy. They don’t have time to cut out the coupon. I then go down to the other WH Smith and get a second DVD using the same newspaper/voucher.

Do your local police know about this scam?

    Albert,
Willow asked this same question only a couple of weeks ago (he, too, is planning a June visit) but raised no satisfactory answer 🙁

Hope someone can shed some light on this.

    Roger Smith.

I contacted the museum via their website and am very pleased to receive this answer:

    Dear Sir,

The museum will be open as usual at least until a decision has been made about the restoration of the aviation hall which is not expected to start before 2011.
Entrance is free of charge and the normal closing day is monday.

    Sincerely
    Alex Peelaers

Yes I have a slide of her when with Ferranti – but finding it is another matter – I’ll see what I can do when I get time. The extended nose was retained for some time and eventually removed when it was civilianised at Duxford (I have a b&w of the mod of the nose to more conventional status when in progress). The extended nose cone after removal ended up with the collection that at one time was at Booker (Wycombe Air Park) – don’t know if the component survives. Sorry I can’t easily share those pics presently.

    Tim

Tim, you are getting your ‘extended nose cones’ mixed up. The Ferranti Airpass radar nose cone was replaced by a large ‘thimble’ radar nose cone in the mid-60s and it is that one that ended up at Booker. TS423 was retired from the RAE in 1979 with that nose shown here. The aircraft was then registered as G-DAKS with Aces High and flew as ‘G-AGHY’ with Ruskin Air Services colours in 1981 for the Yorkshire TV series ‘Airline’.

Don’t remember that Prop Boss colour before- was it like that b4?

It’s been that colour since 1987!!!

Does anyone know what the current status of the Brussels museum is? Is the Aviation Hall open or closed and has restoration of the building began? I am planning on making a visit in June and am concerned I may not get to see the aircraft!

WJ643 at the Turnhouse Air Show 1971? no day glo on rear fuselage and WD953.

I have looked into my archives and find I have a colour slide of WJ643 taken from the starboard side, looks like at the same show at Turnhouse on 22 June 1968. Of course WV787 was used by Ferranti for testing the Buccaneer’s radar and this aircraft went on to A&AEE to become an icing tanker trails aircraft. It was WJ643 that was used for Airpass radar trials by Ferranti.

I think this is the one you probably want. WT327 was modified with a B2 nose, but WV787 was modified with various noses and was used as the Ferranti Airpass testbed.

Jetflap, I’m interested in many photos, i’ll update the list of ones I would like. BLFC is one of them, I only have a B+W photo of her.

…here’s one of G-BLFC from me at Farnborough 5 Sept 1984

I flew my first air-to-air photo sortie with G-AIDN, way back in March 1968 out of Staverton Airport with the Skyfame Museum’s Anson.
Here she is in her early pale blue scheme:

Thanks for those Albert! Can I have permission to use them (I presume they are yours)?

The Sun makes a change from one of the photos I have (from days before the hangar fire i think) of an Optica under 3 or 4 in of snow!

    Brian,

Small world! I was there the very next day!! I think you did very well in those cramped conditions and how you managed to shoot the Hunter is beyond me, as I gave up! A great shame the balcony was closed, but I think this is probably the start of the massive refurbishment programme following their lottery grant. The Air & Space Hall is going to be rebuilt as a state-of–the-art glass building, so hopefully we will soon see these aircraft is much better conditions. Meanwhile, here are two of mine that you didn’t include.
