August 1977 British Air Ferries HP 7-100 Herald G-APWA at Blackbushe at the tender age of 17.
So that would have been on THIS day then?? Is that you waving out of the window?
I applaud this change after seeing the ‘Mk.1V’ in the air in several schemes before its accident. After all, it’s was not a genuine RAF Blenheim Mk.1V anyway, but a Canadian Bolingbroke, so they are not exactly destroying the aircraft’s history, but giving us another variation of the type to see in the air that has never been seen since WW2. I can’t wait to see it completed.
…let’s go into colour! 😮 These two shots show 29 Squadron FAW.9s at Nairobi and Akrotiri in 1965
Have you got any of the Javellin that used to be at Manston – I used to spend hours clambering around undernreath it when i was a kid. What happened to it? – did it end up on the fire dump?
You mean this one?
Well, what a variety we have had so far and am pleased to see so many are more ‘mature’ than I am, having flown much earlier. Surprisingly, there are some regular posters amongst us who only flew for the first time a few years ago! Are they really THAT young, that they couldn’t get airborne earlier, or wasn’t the opportunity there? I must say that after my first flight, which was a pleasure trip in that Auster, my flying log was greatly boosted when I became an ATC Cadet which gave me lots of free flights in RAF aircraft.
If there are any of our younger posters out there between 13-18, I strongly recommend joining the Air Training Corps for free flying. If nothing else, it kept me off the streets!
Another six to add to the assortment. All were taken at Wethersfield on 19 May 1962.
Glyn
1 F-100D Super Sabre 55-3669 coded FW-669
2 B-47E Stratojet 52-0581 coded 581
3 F-84F Thunderstreak 52-6629 of Ohio ANG
4 RF-101H Voodoo 54-1486 coded 41486
5 C-124C Globemaster 52-0958 coded 20963
6 Eb-66E Destroyer 54-0434 coded BB-434
Glyn,
The ‘RF-101H’ is in fact an F-101C of 81 TFW and
the ‘EB-66E’ is in fact an RB-66B of 10 TRW
For some reason you are quoting later designations for these types?
With an ex girlfreinds dad in a Piper Tomahawk from Wellesbourne in the mid eighties, great fun as I remember, couldn’t be that lucky again meeting a girl who’s dad was a pilot! Split up not long after she thought I was more interested in aircraft than her, don’t know why?!
Alan.
You should have told her you were only interested in Bristols
Hmm, looks like they started with NUMBER tail codes, then changed to LETTERS in 1963 and reverted to NUMBERS when they got G.91s in December 1964. Can anyone confirm this?
Neil,
You can only get into Fairford on the Friday and Monday if you are a member of FRIAT, which I think costs £130.00 as a package. Check out http://www.airtattoo.com for details.
Same problem as ‘Grey Area’ ! I have this lens and also have a problem that it decides to ‘hunt’ for focus at the most critical time!! I don’t trust it and always use manual focus and have no problem when I do that. In fact, modesty aside, I find I can focus quicker than the camera can!
Thanks very much for posting these Glyn. However, are you sure about the date as I was under the impression that the “Frecce Tricolori” Sabres used LETTER tail codes up until May 1963, when they changed to NUMBER codes? Here is 19550 ‘G’ at the Paris Air show in June 1963 and a shot of the team at Rivolto in late 1963 with number tail codes which were carried on to the Fiat G.91PANs.
So…anyone want to make a educated guess, do you think it will be a flypast for the first Airshow outing? or will she be static, and then take off do her display and land?
Given the insurance costs involved….and dependant I guess on when and where she flies from….and yes when….
Do you want an ‘educated guess’ or a cynical answer that will start the arguments all over again?
I must say the Hermes is looking good now after its repaint. 😉
Acondition of the lottery cash was that 558sport colours that represent the Cold War era. So no to Red Bull!unless they are happy to have avery small logo on the tail.
So that’s be white overall then, as the height of the Cold War was in the ’60s? 😎 Ah, a white Vulcan with the sun on it against a black stormy sky….cracking Grommit!
Also taken at that show I have a couple of the Frecce sabres. Does anyone have a tie up between the codes they wore and their serials?
Glyn
I may have, Glyn. Please post the photos? Trouble is that the Frecce Sabres were very dark blue with black serials! 🙁
