Who needs paint?

Or the airframe after she had finished with it.

[I], I wouldn’t object to the paint scheme in the photo above – even though it’s pretty wild, it was an in-service paint scheme, even if not for long (it also reminds me of the whole saga, when 6 Squadron’s boss first contacted me seeking some help with his plans to paint a Jaguar… look what happened – eek!).

Well that is what OC 6 wanted. The fact it was similar to that German “Tiger Meet” Tornado was my problem with it. The whole saga of that scheme started in early December 2006. The original draft image sent to ACM Joe French to authorise. Makes me want to throw up looking at it and I had to draw the thing. Joe Buck of Jaguar/Landrover made the changes of the orange and extending the scheme to the wings (that I had avoided as it meant a reweigh of the frame at a time when the ground equipment required was being disposed of). The tanks had come from another idea, that as I was changing the design to meet OC6s wishes , had been already painted by the Coningsby painters on the authority of the SEngO (and not communicated). They looked wrong in real life, so ended up on the our last T-Bird.

A few photos will be taken of it again this Saturday.

He could always paint it like that, I would be happy.

I certainly wish them well. Even though it’s on the other side of the Atlantic, it would be good to know that a former RAF Jaguar was back in the air. I’m quite surprised that anyone in the States has such enthusiasm for the Jaguar!

Well the RAF Jags did do many a det across the pond.. Oh, I miss those.

Yes, that seems to be the case – they don’t make the news pages very often. All of the above aircraft have had their share of media coverage but I haven’t heard anything about them in ages. I guess one has to assume that no news is good news, whereas in the UK, it often means bad news! πŸ™‚

The project is still alive I’ve heard. XX832 suffered the fate of spares recovery like most Jags disposed of. It takes time and money to fill the holes (lots more money would make it a lot easier).

I believe one of the first uncontained failures (turbine disc) was caused by mis-matching the NGV’s during a rebuild in RAFG.
Isolating the pumps is a good move but can you also blank off the feeds to the galleries?

No reason why not. Blanks in the flexirac couplings and sealant would close the gallery lines not required. Only need Fuel in F1, the N Tanks and the feed lines to the engines.

The F4 tanks will be totally dry and totally sealed off from the rest of the system. Because engines that are not airworthy will be running underneath it. Uncontained engine failure has killed a few Jags with the massive reservoir of fuel raining down on to a disintegrating engine. Wings and the centre group do not need fuel in them for our purpose so won’t have fuel in them either. Fuel pumps will be isolated too.

We are well aware of the health and safety implications of those tanks. They will never carry fuel again and the guys who will be painting them up will not be rubbing them down to matrix and any cracked or chipped areas of existing paint will be filled. Only tanks going to see any fuel is the F1 and the N Tanks. They will be the ones, I will have most concern about leaks. The pressure refuelling system will not be used either.

Further update: The starboard slat drive system has been restored and Slat rollers restored to working condition and lubricated. The Starboard slat works a treat with no adjustment and the port now rolls on its tracks as well (not perfectly but well enough for our uses (we hope). A bit of wire locking and a couple of items to sort and we will stick the slats on and see if we can get the heavily disturbed hydraulics to work. Flap system just needs the port outer flap screw jacks and shafts to be installed and the flap rollers / tracks checked out and flaps set up. We also have a delivery of some rare and very welcome components that will finish the airframe externally and allow progress towards a running frame.

Our Adours have a full set of ancillaries, with the addition of Alternators and TGT Amplifiers

Full set of wing pylon Ejector Release Units

     Oh, Wing Pylons too.

and two complete tanks units (in sections at moment).

We will be busy restoring the latter items prior to installation. πŸ™‚

It wasn’t mentioned over the two days of filming at Bentwaters. They concentrated on the Cold War role of the base.

    Graham

So much so that the Cold War Expert got totally stumped by one of Jules questions and said the Meteor was armed with machine guns.. Realising of course it had cannons after the filming finished.. No UFO’s were mentioned in any way, shape or form by two of the contributors.. Wonder who they were?

Bentwaters on the 28th. Agree on the errors and the mistakes, but the production team is very small and work on tight time lines and budgets. Even some of the experts make mistakes… One can’t proof read and rerecord filming that is already done, there is no auto cue πŸ˜‰

Saw the special edition.. One of Chris’s drawings was as he drew it. Rest had the image flaws of the first print run.

Good luck with it Peppermint, know exactly what your are talking about with the scars that a Jag GR has given me today. We have engines for ours, but have a few items missing from the rest of the frame that means said engines will not run. Seems most frames disposed of by the MoD now especially ones that are still in service elsewhere are robbed blind of anything of value or remaining life and sold on to other organisations or agents before the frames are then sold on. Good old spares recovery πŸ™

And the markings and colours decided on for standard schemes of RAF aircraft is decided by the “Camouflage Working Group”, civil servants and RAF surface finish experts. The standard is set for each type depending on role. ALL Ceremonial schemes must be applied up to and authorised by C in C Air Command if different from the set standard.. and cleared by the CWG as well (that does tend to be a rubber stamp if the boss says OK). Rules are tight because of public expense considerations mean unless a Squadron can stump up the cash to do the scheme and return it to standard at the end of the scheme period (it will not be authorised forever), it is unlikely to be done. Considerations as a complete aircraft re weigh are also to be considered in the design of such schemes (more cost), that fins / spine paints avoid. Been there, done that, got the Jamie Hunter A to A shot of it (who doesn’t slag off photo ship jockeys like someone you know 904). This Tiffie is celebrating 75 years since the BofB, so considerations have been rightly more relaxed on scope of the work required and expense to the public purse IMHO.
