Work has been progressing slowly on XX741 this winter and early spring, due to availability of the project leaders due to work commitments. However we have started to rebuild the high lift device mechanisms of the wing (that had been stripped out of the replacement one we received with XX741). Time and the elements had not been kind to the slat drive system, with all the intermediate drive shaft bearings being so corroded that replacement of them was the only solution. All the leading edges had to be removed and the bearing changed to commercial ones. The left hand side screw jacks have been refitted with the left side drive, just the locking of items and adjustment of rollers to allow the slat to properly roll required on that side, before panelling up.. Other side is stripped out and bearings changed, awaiting rebuild.
The fund page has disappeared and so has Mr Wilkes by rumour control. I paid money into that on good faith.
Well caught – did you manage to get any contact for any spares? 😉
Go on the DSA website, loads on there.. Nice J41s 🙂 .
Exciting development – so many questions. Are they yours? Do they run (on the ground I mean)?
Yes and hopefully we can get them running in time. The shafts are free and the engines are virtually complete now (and we have access to any missing parts if we find them). Fuel control systems and the issues that made them ground instructional engines, certainly one of them, may have to be addressed for long term operation.

Various videos of XX741 as hydraulic and AC power are applied to the frame for the first time in 20 odd years..

XX741 lives.. Need to update the last progress report!
Basic errors like the “31st of April 2007”, looks like it didn’t get a good proof read. Virtually all the drawings have the same photo shop error and photographs that have been credited to non existent people. Stu has multiple images included in the publication without his correct acknowledgement of name (and unlikely his proper permission, they are of XX741 and I was at the events he took the photo’s). The usual rubbish about the Maritime Jaguar with its successful carrier trials. The second trial was finished early as the aircraft had fatigue cracks on the fuselage and the French Test Pilots were damming in their reports of the tests (been told that by a British liaison officer that saw the paperwork). It does mention a half decent flight test section stating engine development hindering the airframe, however missing A04s escape from the same accident A03 had (that confirmed the single engine performance), E01s maiden flight was not a 100% success (broke an undercarriage door due to unforeseen aerodynamic effects) and the other aerodynamic issues, other publication point to. Drawings spoil it and too many errors.
The wing fences and the over wing pylons are in the wrong position too. They sit directly over the top of the inner pylons in real life. Who did your drawings?
If that is a GR3 on the second profile, aerial is completely wrong..
Hi Canopener,
Quite a write up on what led up to the Jaguars inception. All seems quite correct as I remember it too. I nearly made it into the TSR-2 Hot Weather Trials planned for Australia in late 1964. Was upset about this for many years but got to service Jaguar Internationals in Oman for many years in 1980’s-early 90’s. A great Aircraft and I enjoyed my time there at Thumrait and still do with the memories. Thanks for your input.Bill T.
No Problems Bill. My write up was done by actually spending my time and my money to go to Kew and look up the JMC files and many others that exist in the National Archives. I know professional writers cannot do such a thing as it costs time and money to do so. My trips to Kew and Warton cost a few quid. I have not seen the publication yet, but a fellow Jag lover, has found me a copy and I’ll examine it at my leisure for a critic’s review later..
