I have just read Geoffrey Wellum’s First Light for the second time , great read , beautifully written . Test Pilots, the story of British test flying 1903-1984 by Don Middleton , and Lions Rampant , the story of 602 Spitfire Squadron are also great. I have always said , if someone want’s a loan of a book , I will happily post it . Some good choices above ! My favourite fiction is Catch-22 , but that’s a love or hate , read one time deal . Great book.
Great news ! The more the better! It is amazing to hear of more Hurricanes gracing our skies . This clip to me says it all …..
Always thought that this was a great pic. The one having a fly puff looks like the only one that doesn’t know this is being taken ! Least of their worries I would expect !

Interesting thread. It’s amazing what must lie beneath ! Not wanting to hijack, mearly to add. A couple of years ago I was at Hunters Quay , near Dunoon. On the beach below the campsite was a tyre, that looked aircraft like to me. Ths area was literally buzzing during the war. The size 10 footprint was the only way I could think of to give scale ! Any ideas ?

There were two Lancasters modified with long range dorsal saddle tanks,HK541 and SW244. I always thought this was a mod for the FE Lancasters ? Would this have been used if they had went over? Awful looking modifcation , and wouldn’t have fancied sitting under all that fuel !!!
Oh, so many, but the first I remember without help may be the Matchbox Dornier Do-24 . Always loved Matchbox for their eclectic kits ! The first I painted and made a decent job of was an Airfix Hurricane. All 1.72. I set fire to a barn next to my house in an unfortunate inident involving petrol from the lawmower, a string from my sisters window, and a blazing Spitfire ! Can’t imagine kids doing that now , maybe a good thing !!
Putting a face to this sad story, posted on the ARC forum
Thankyou for posting the link. Amazing . Good to be able to put a face to this. So very sad.
That was indeed moving. The true cost of war. As a long serving firefighter, I have had to deal with moments that require quiet dignity , and it truly rung a bell to see this. May we remember them all. Lest we forget.
Enjoyed that. Made a balsa and tissue glider in my lunch hours at school. Already made an Airfix Spitfire with my five year old son, but whether he continues , who knows. My childhood was full of Commando books, The Victor, action men, model kits which hung from my ceiling etc. Not only did they teach you dexterity (ideal for making Ikea units!) and patience , but instilled a sense of history, and learning. Better than smart phone (which my son can work better than me already!) anyday !
Thirded ! Well done, what a team. Your restorations enthral all us “normals” out here. It is a privelage that you include us. Thankyou.
Willie
Lovely, just lovely. Well done to all involved , and for the pictures.
Lovely pic ! Thanks ! 🙂
Great aircraft , and memories ! Remember the Leuchars airshows there would be interuptions for scrambles !! Will check this book out for sure ! Still have a signed Dugald Cameron print from the Phantom Pharewell by the pilot and navigator, can vouch for it’s provinace as I got it signed personally! Awesome plane !!

I have seen pics of that wreck before, thanks for sharing, and have heard of the other remains too, most interesting ! So, what about the one the RAFM has,Big – youknowwhat ! (don’t want to cause ripples ! ) Has it been crated and buried in a pit for future preservation? Couldn’t resist, sorry, will get me coat !!!
Many thanks Robert. Looks lovely.
Willie.
