Interesting. I was fortunate to see the CF-104’s of the CAF many times. Close up views of them coming in over the fence and touching down at 160 knots were always great fun.

If you ever get a chance to pick up a copy of ‘Starfighter’ by David L Bashow, do so. (someone at ACIG may be able to relate to it) It’s a retropective of CF-104 service from 1961-1986. While it has many technical details they mostly relate one way or another, to the many submissions from a host of individuals who flew the jet including a number of exchange types from the USAF. The stories are interesting and personal (some are funny) and cover the full range of experiences with the jet in CAF service in Canada as well as at Canadian NATO bases at Marville, Grostenquin, Zweibrucken, Bashow, Lahr and Baden-Soellingen. There are a tonne of very interesting photos.
CF-104 were shipped into their European bases squeezed into CAF C-130’s sans their empennage, wings and nosecones.

Bashow has 2400 hours in the 104 in addition to those in the CF-5, F-15, F-16 and CF-18 (gasp!) and is a grad of both the USAF/GAF Fighter Weapons Instuctor School and the USN Fighter Weapons School.

Just I reminder – Arab who are atually citizens of Israel vote in all elections. They are the only M-E Arabs who live in a true democracy. I would guess most of us here live in democracies and on balance are very greatfull that we do even though we bitch non-stop.

Unfortunately for both Arabs and Jews it dosn’t look like workable liberal democratic practices are going to evolve in Palestine or elsewhere in the region any time soon with the possible exception of Iraq. This is unfortunate because those principles are the best chance for true peace between Israel and the Palestinians. As long as the power in Palestine, Syria, SA, etc, remains in the hands of the current brand of leadership there is little chance because the vast majority of Arabs will remain without a voice.

Opinion pieces from left-wingers are hardly places to go to seek the true but what do either of them have to due with this discussion?

If the speed of the Super Hornet is such a problem (keeping up and all that) why is the speed of the Prowler not a bigger proplem?

Everyone likes the Netherlands. Canadian troops liked it so well after WWII, they married all the girls who were the best cooks and brought them to Ontario.

I believe the USA deserves a lot of credit for it’s policy in the middle east post WWII. We have to deal objectively with the issue of what would have happened if the US had abandoned Israel when others did. There is simply no way around it. It frankly suprises me, therefore, that you put such a value on not being “played for fools”. Standing up for it’s own interests indeed. Who dosn’t?

What should the US have done differently?
