Gee. I thought Egypt was in Africa. I must take another look.
Any excuse to avoid admitting that this is essentually an African problem requiring an African solution.

I thought you were serious about this subject.
As you implied both SA and Nigeria have the ability to perform ‘peace’ missions but so is Egypt and others. Last time I looked Egypt was part of Africa. Where does it stand on African social and security and human rights issues? Egypt, Nigeria and SA alone have a combined population of approximately 240 million and all have substantial military capability.
As you pointed out, the UK restored order in Sierra Leone “with just a couple hundred solders.” Where are the couple hundred African troops to restore order in Liberia?

Perhaps if more of the population would speak out and stand up for themselves and the central government (which may not be perfect but has to be better than the Taliban) instead of supporting the local bully boys or simply whining for another hand out, things would improve at a faster pace. At some point the more responsible elements of the population have to stand up for themselves and whatever brand of government they want.

As usual the UN is AWOL. Maybe the US will eventually agree to support and coordinate a multi-national force but they are reluctant to take an active combat role.
It’s astounding that among all of the African nations there are not a few with enough interest, pride or humanity to get together and deal with the situation on their own.

Oh I can think of a few. The USSR, Germany, Italy, Japan, China, GB, France, Iraq, etc, etc.

Its interesting that Garry considers the relatively good treatment received by the detainees in Guantanamo (and Iraq for that matter) on a par with cutting peoples heads off.

I could be wrong but I don’t believe Saddam ever attended Sandhurst. I don’t believe he ever travelled outside the ME. I think he did try to enrole in the Baghdad Military Academybut was rejected because of his poor grades. HE appointed himself General but he never earned it through service.
Saddam was involved in an assassination attempt against Gen. Kassem in 1959 but who knows if he had personal contact or ‘training’ from the CIA. He certainly had indirect contact while out of Irag after 1959 and latter via Jordan. As to details? Lots of stories. Few Facts. It would appear that later on his security forces were trained in or by eastern european countries, in particular East Germany.
I have never heard anyone claim OB ever attended CIA training of any kind. The US did support his fight against the USSR.
On the subject of the IRA, I simply do not believe the US or any of its agencies ever knowingly supplied direct support to the IRA . Weapons can be obtained many ways.
As far as the Stinger goes, some were supplied to Afghans fighting against the USSR. Maybe OB has one in his suitcase. To my knowledge no US aircraft or helos have been hit by stingers in Afghanistan or Iraq but I don’t know for sure. Stingers flown to Peshwar in a C-5? Whats this about? US forces being targeted by them in Afghanistan?
Socialist Europeans being weak on terrorism? Never said that. Perhaps you have me confused with someone else? My understanding is that european counties are very active in the fight against terrorists. The US government sure seems to think so.

Yes some of the replies are amusing and some are pretty stupid as well.
On the point made about US assistance to the IRA. Have you noticed that such comments often hint that the US condones this type of support. Sadly, there are those individuals in the US who support either IRA or Loyalist terrorists but there are individuals who support other such groups around the world as well and its very dificult to control. I wonder how much money find its way to the IRA out of the Irish population in England or to ME terrorist groups out of arab populations in Europe?
As usual on this forum the US is singled out with no mention that this type of thing is wide spread.
It would be interesting to know if the people who whine about why the US dosn’t prevent such support, are the same ones to like to whine that recent anti-terrorist legislation in the US are is unjust and un-democratic. Just a thought.
That bit about Stingers being used against US forces is a surprise to me. While I admit I know little about them, I thought they are mainly for use aganist aircraft and helos and I don’t recall such US loses to enemy action recently. Any info on this?
Lastly, do you know at which CIA facility Osama and Saddam were trained at?
😀
