    RE: How time flys

    Sam

Actually any one who lives in Canada could tell you that it is as much a melting pot as the US. If you have ever been in Toronto or Vacouver you would see for yourself. Even Montreal has become quite diverse in the last 60 years or so. I live in Canada and have helped my wife raise four children here so I am not a teen. I have a reasonable knowledge of Canadian history.

Personaly I try to avoid hyphenating people if I can. Its my obervation that most ordinary folks do as well. The press and the special interest groups thrive on labels.

I was just trying to pull your leg a little Sam but I guess you feel any counter observation about europe are off limits.

Well you have a point about the bulk of european immigration into the Americas occuring from 1800, however the sense of being American or Canadian (as examples) had developed to a significant degree by then. Perhaps that is dificult for some folks to understand.

I do not recall ever hearing the term European-Canadian used in common speech in Canada (nor by Americans that I am aware) but I suppose now that Europeans no longer see themselves as distinct nationalities or members of an ethnic group, it is the more politically correct term for us to use. J

Just a minor point, but I didn’t say that Europe was the centre of the world’s attention, only that it wants to be.:-)

Sounds like a good idea. Sort of like a modern Tribal class. By the way not to change the subject, but the tribal HMCS Haida still exists as a display vessel in Toronto.

    Glenn

First Steve sells off leaky subs to Canada, now he wants to sell Australia a leaky destroyer. 🙂

Europeans in the Americas for only 200 yrs?. 🙂 Thats sort of like saying nothing happened in the UK before 1066.

Yes you are correct that the many Americas are still somewhat “euopean” based on origin but IMHO thats as far as it goes. Amazing or not, North Americans, while quite aware of their origins, certainly do not consider themselves Euro-American, at least not in my experience. Perhaps some Europeans still view the Americas the way they wish they were rather than the way they are. The colonials as the British used to say.

From my prospective, many Europeans still feel the need to be the centre of the world’s attention again and that is why they appear to resent the US at times. A return to the glory days of the early 1900’s. Perhaps this is illustrated by the circle of stars which adorns the EU flag. 🙂

    RE: American Bashing!

    Primer

So the military coup was a Brazilian affair caused by disagreement within the country. The question is, would the coup have failed without the support of the CIA if indeed the CIA had any infuence at the time? Brazil’s democratic institutions must have been quite weak throughout much of the country at that time.

    Brazil’s 25 yr dictatorship

    Primer

You blame the CIA (the USA) for ‘your’ 25 year dictatorship. Thats the kind of comment that I find hard to accept.

Brazil is a large country full of smart people. Its hard to believe, therefore that Brazilians would blame the USA for their own bad government. Perhaps democratic processes in Brazil were alot slower to mature in Brazil than in other new world nations such as the US and Canada, for reasons internal to Brazil and its early history rather than to the CIA.

    RE: Ratification

Found this info on the CIA site.

Nations which have signed but not “ratified” the Kyoto accord include:

    Australia
    Belgium
    Brazil
    Argentina
    Canada
    China
    France
    Germany
    India
    Indonesia
    Italy
    Japan
    Netherlands
    New Zealand
    Russia
    UK
    USA

    etc,etc

I wonder if this is accurate/current? If so, why the delay from those that seem so commited?

    RE: Compare US to Brazil

It makes you wonder about Brazil. Both it and the US started out as colonies of European powers. Both have extensive resourses, energetic people, diversity, natural beauty, fine climates and extentive coastlines, large populations etc, etc. They are the same size geographically. They both have most of the ingedients to be great and they started out in approximately the same place and time in the development of so called ‘new world’.

In spite of all those similarities, look at them now. The US economy is the largest and most prosperous in the world, it is a world power in every sense and while we can argue about the nature of its past and current policies it has been and continues to be the most influential nation in many respects. Look at Brazil in comparison.
