What I don’t understand is why everyone is praising this digital stuff when it may not suit your needs. It all depends on what you do with your camera.
If you are the average joe or enthuased amature (most people) then sure a cheap Digital will work wonders as you can instantly view what you’ve taken and delete the junk (most of the pictures) and keep what you do like.
A EOS 300D in my mind is still only an amature camera. Although an SLR version where you have some choice with lens but limited working range. Your choice of lens and your set up if you have one will be limited to the money you can spend. For most people thats less then say $1000
So why spend ~$2000 getting an average camera with a average lens when you can buy a Nikon N80 film at a mind boggling price and a new spectacular prime lens?
And how many of you out there have done night scenes and long exposure with a digital or low light nature or bright cloud cover? The night scene gives flat tones and unrealistic colour. Cloud cover gets burned out and gives you way less colour depth than what you want.
There are places where you might want to use a digital but there are also places where film excel…it all depends on your needs.
I think you’d have to got a Microsoft PictureIt or the discontinued PhotoDraw 2000 for it to open…
Better download a copy using bittorrent… I’m sure people are sharing it online. Good luck hunting!
Microsoft makes the weirdest file types and haggles you to buy their products…
Both exciting digital SLR for beginners but I find both lacking in some key features in PRO digital SLR… Not much different in handling. I’ve useds the Canon 300D and D70 which are the older versions and with those I’d recommend the D70 because it dosen’t handle like a novice camera the way a 300D does. D50 is actually sort of a step down model from D70 where they have included better motion focusing but deleted Wireless flash, rear command dials, No DOF preview button, No White Balance fine tuning, 1/8000 sec exposure to 1/4000 sec, less Sensitivity steps from 1/3 EV steps to 1 EV steps. Which makes it sort of a newbie camera…like the 350D
For a little more I’d bet on a used EOS 10D or a EOS 20D. Both would give you roughly same results but a better built body and some handy extra features you might need later.
You’re right Digital can take a lot of corrections where film cannot though processing. But that also means you need to learn photoshop along with picture taking which can be of a nuisance for beginners. Honestly how many beginners know who to correctly tweak photos on the computer, even professionals need help in this department? Where are the days when you can leave all the developing decision to your trusty photo finisher?
Shooting RAW has almost nothing to do with colour burn out and once the colour is already burnt out there is nothing you can do to bring them back. Unlike film which can take a variety of ranges and still give acceptable work digital don’t give you that pleasure. Thus meaning you’d better take everything darker and lighten them up in photoshop and again bring us to my first point…
I’ve worked with both film and Digital…
and I have to say except the fact that digital give you instant gratification of viewing pictures right away and reduced cost in negatives, film has better quality in all other respects.
Personally I don’t do action shots, as I mostly shoot nature or skin so to me a film really suffice. I’ve used D2H, olympus E-2 and such but found sharp colour and especially purple fringing to be a tough problem.
I can live with film that are a bit soft on the focus but if the final result of digital turn out that colour gets burned out in high contrast or vivid setting and the fact that bright light and chrome don’t mix is really limiting for my uses.
So I suggest film if you are not in a rush to see what you’ve shot and the camera is a lot cheaper too.
My question on this subject is this. Should China make Varyag seaworthy again, I would assume they would create a CBG. However, I would imagine that this would only be the beginning as China’s government would most likely decide to design their own indigenous carriers. How many do you guys think the Chinese Navy would need in order to be able to counter any threat they might encounter? As well, would the Varyag, if it is indeed being retrofitted, be involved in a move to take over Taiwan?
China might need carriers as time progress as power projection ability is required. THat may be 10 or even as long as 50 years down the road.
Right this moment there is no immediate need for a CV.
Why do people here always tie Varyag with Taiwan? Shadow isn’t the only one here… Hopefully people should realize Chinese desire of a CV does focus on the ability to attack Taiwan but rather to secure and protect sealanes and project power where they are not yet within the reaches of the PLAN or PLAAF.
In a nut shell Taiwan is only 200km off the Chinese shore no real need for a CV.
The paint job could be just to keep the ship from deteriorating further?
what’s the point if your not choosing to use it? If they are stripping the ship for scrap they they wouldn’t bother with the paint which could potenially cost a lot for a ship of this size. If PLAN are stripping the ship they might as well do it now…they already had a ton of time for engineers to come and study the design no point in actually keeping a ship at the Ship Yard and take up valuable space that can be used to build other ships.
But what would be the use of Varyag? Unless they are converting it into training deck or less likely a conventional carrier or maybe only a helo carrier… I don’t see the point.
Let me bring things back on track.
Recent photo of Varyag posted from our good friends at CDF
Definately a new lick of paint. light blue or grey( whatever the colour of PLAN since I could never figure out…)
… but what is the thing on the starboard side?
lol finally settled on the deal.
took them long enough…
What version of exocet included?
I thought there are many Air boats in the area that are useful in getting people around…
didn’t see any of those in the field though…
It’s a media statement. No one has disclosed the exact range of the C-803 but it seems so far it can go furhter than 200km from sea launch with air launch projected at 250+km.
For a missile this size to go 200+km is pretty hard to swallow. Especially for the russians who’ve recently delivered the Club-S missile system to China. On comparing with Club system the chinese missile is smaller and rely on only a single stage while Club is much larger…
Scooter mate…
I tend to think that you believe in the impossibilities here…
Lets look at the situation another way. Take Bill Gates for example. Once the richest man on earth, he has the means to stop poverty in all of America. He can donate all of his wealth in the aid of others and he’s definately aided others in the past. He’s even been knighted KBE by the british royals due to his aid. But it is not likely that he will give all his possesions to charity due to personal interest.
Why? If there is nothing to gain for you why would you put everything on the line? Just like there is nothing to gain from waging war with China for Taiwan.
You can believe that bread will fall from the sky but bottom line is that it will never happen.
Well, hopefully China doesn’t have the same views as you? That would be a “dangerous miscalculation”. :dev2: The US will Defend Taiwan no doubt. Further, countries like Japan and South Korea will allow the US Military to use its bases in there respect of Countries. Further, world opinion will favor Taiwan over any forced reunification by China……..
All depends on the situation. It seems that Taiwan has less and less of a chance of independance as time pass on and the only time frame for a independance is rather now. Before 2008 olympics to discourage a chinese invasion. But international consesis and that includes the view of US is that if Taiwan declare independance they they are on their own… as Bush said “we have no obligations to fight for Taiwan” But if China single sidely invaded Taiwan there would be US intervention. The question is to what magnitude? I don’t think US would deploy troops but rather send weapons and supplies aid. To actively oraganize a concensis in the senate for a War with china would take weeks if not months of debating. A counter offensive would be organized too late. I don’t know if you people realize that to mobilize or for a order to be carried out in a division level takes 72 hours minimum. A naval battle group takes ~ 7 days to prepare.
so no matter what Chinese have a huge lead in the war.
No I dont think Amrika bahadur needs to back down. I think it works this way.
1. A irrational madman like OBL who apparently has no thought to his own life or his
own country (whatever that may be at the moment ;)) can make such a threat with a
nuke “I have a nuke pre-positioned with my cell in NYC” . the US cant threaten him back
because he doesnt care and he cant be found. so nothing the US does will hurt his
demented mind.2. China is a country and a civilization that has finally enjoyed 25 good years after
75 years of chaos and misrule. US knows what their vital nodes are and how to hurt
them . would the CCP throw everything away ? if they make the threat and US rejects
their demand what will they do ? they can lob 20 nukes at the US and get 20000 in
return ?You cannot threaten in nuclear terms a much stronger adversary if you value your
own assets. if you are prepared for a nuclear exchange that is another matter.
well american did sell Iran weapons after the Iranians stormed the american ambassy and took everyone hostage.
Hell the Americans could have not back down and declare war on Iran.
Taking an ambassy(ie. foreign territory) is considered an act of war. But in fear of american lives the United states backed down…
yes, Japan should go ahead and make some ICBMs, at least IRBMs, instead.
well if you think about it ICBM or IRBM are proven and battle tested systems that will definately work.
No one has ever came close to building an ABM system. How many analysts have been warning that this project could turn into a massive blackhole for funds and no guarentee that it’s going to work at all… Look at how strong the US have been lobbying parters to share its burden… They are pratically forcing Canada to join in as well.
To develope a ABM infostructure you need a lot of R&D and a lot of money. This money is used in the american economy and thus stimulation it’s growth. I can understand why US would want to develope such a system but why anyone else would be suckered into paying is anyones guess.
