If china have plans on securing any other planes from Russia… i seriously doubt it will offer any J11 on the international market.

I’m simply pointing out that your statement about the PRC having the right to to exercise control over its sovereign territory (i.e. Taiwan) will not float as far as the official US policy is concerned. We continue to support Taiwan in its right to build a credible defense against PRC aggression. We continue to ignore the PRC’s threats to anyone who supports Taiwan (unlike most of Europe). We have also not ruled out direct military intervention if this aggression is unprovoked from our point of view.

    Those are the facts.

no Bush continues to support taiwan, and sadly i doubt if everyone in the whitehouse breath down the same neck… i’m reffering to collin powell’s speech in china (intentional or not!)

No…it’s still just “bluster”…but I wanted to point out that they have indeed used that threat…not just as a threat against a Taiwan declaration of independence, but also as a “stick” to get the two sides talking about reunification again.

well you have to understand why they are using such a “verbal” no physical action taken threat… The Taiwan government are trying to reduce the amount of impact of the influence of mainland china upon their citizens… They try to in a way brain wash people and convince them to believe Taiwan is a sovergn nation, they refused to acknoledge their official government name, the republic of China and only acknoledges Taiwan. So in short they try to remove the concept of being chinese… This action have already been going on at alarming rates… The mainland government fear that in time the whole population of Taiwan may believe they are really a seperate sovergn nation. And anyways the conflict is a problem that should besolved … not like cold war where everything could drag on forever…

if MAO is still in charge of mainland today… you’d see war tomorrow just like korea!!!

What i mean is the chinese government is exercising an amazing amount self control on such matters lately…

please someone tell these two to cool off…

I don’t think you two understand the situation at all here
this is a bad stand off situation to argue because, reality state the stake of war are too high for Taiwan so why are we arguing about something that won’t ever happen…Taiwan can’t sustain a escalating war by it self…
Taiwan economy and the chinese economy are so closely tied that any physical seperatism movement would result in economical sanction by the mainland, which would cause caos and total market failure within Taiwan. Taiwan has very limited resourced, their crude oil are 100% imports that only last at most 6 month. Chinese don’t need to do anything except a blockade. This blockade is different from many historic proof since Taiwan isn’t the second England. Taiwan is small, and without firm international support form allied countries. And the chinese blockade don’t need to be 100% successful but make it tough enough so that most Taiwanese merchants feel the lack of taste in shipping.

The Mig29M lack also a co pilot which is useful for dedicated ground attacks.
It’s just a little too much for a single pilot to both fly and operate ground attack at the same time…not that it couldent be done but one of the jobs have to be prioritized. That’s why the SU27UBK, Su30MKK and the F15E strike eagle are all two seater…

The 688 will still detect the Victor first. You have to understand how the whole process works first. A submarine won’t tool along at 25 knots during its’ entire patrol. You were very right in stating the sonar degradation issue with regard to increased speed. However, tactics can be used to alleviate these effects, such as jumping forward at high speed and then cutting power and coasting for a while. Plus, when you consider that a typical CVBG has not one, but two 688s in residence, you can have one shooting off at high speed to leapfrog forward while the other is still listening for enemy targets.

    I don’t agree…
Just because american have larger and more expensive equipement on board a larger sub doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. Sub warfare is largely dependant on geography and relevant tactics. SSN are designed with deep oeanic mission in mind. In the taiwan straight the water depth is only at most 200m thus meaning shallow waters, making it a tougher time for a larger SSN to hide. Yes it is agreed a US made SSN have better detection and tracking equipement but let us not forget that a SSK sub is generally more quiet, and more suited to coastal and shallow water warfare… these SSK captain have always trained in such conditions while the SSN have to venture into not so familiar territory.

US SSN have always been participating in NATO war games with allied NATO fleets. i.e. one on one with a allied SSK in shallow waters… GO check the stats on those…and you will find that a SSK in shallow water fare just as well, and in some cases better than the more expensive SSN.

And to cast some doubt on american sonar detection technology… do you still remember the incident where a LA class sub crashing into a Jap fishing boat when it surfaced and killing some Jap fishing students off the coast of Hawaii??? The sub didn’t even know there was a boat on top… !!! Oh i remembered the Navy refused to comment on that incident…

But still japan is only allowed to participate in defence related projects… due to its historic aggresions and its ignorant policies of unwilling to apologize for ww2…

Japan has some hidden agenda (well not so hidden nowa days) to start up it’s military engine again… notice that Japan has the worlds second largest military budget, and it adopt new policies to change it’s (self defence army) into a regular army…and its enthusiasm to join UN as a permanent member.

If submarines are obsolete they why are countries such as US, Russia, China etc designing and of course building newer models… i believe these military specialists hired arn’t all bunch of idiots. I have no idea what new technology he’s deaming about but the 636 subs the chinese are getting from the russian are quoted at around 90 decibels which is quite close to the surrounding noise. they are quite hard to detect with sonar.

and regarding the Taiwan U boats… did the states ever finalize on the design and make of the proposed ships to be provided to taiwan???

…. Got nothing to do with the PLAN or China- absolutely nothing. This is a matter of the inescapable facts of shipbuilding. They would be better served building a new carrier from scratch than attempting to get the Varyag moving. It was an abandoned hulk when that Chinese company bought it for the paltry price of $20 million- 80% complete when abandoned, it was stripped of *all* useful equipment and left alone for 10 years- literaly. No engines, no rudder, no mission equipment of any kind. The word “hulk” in naval terms is applied to the Varyag for a reason.

The Chinese arn’t actually trying to salvage the Varyag that’s why it’s being turned into a floating casino… i think the PLAN are only studying the hull structure so in the future it will have prior knoledge to start it’s own design… you have to realize that the carrier by itself is a huge floating target without the fleet of DDGs… The chinese are focusing on aquiring new DDGs with “aegis” capability and VSL before contemplating a new carrier.
