Lovely stuff that.

Are the aircraft there simply out of service/retired with a sign in front of them or are there conservation/restoration programmes evident?

Just a thought – any likelyhood of a spelling error?

Could this be De Bruyne – as in Dr. N. A. De Bruyne who built two light aircraft of his own design (in the Cambridge area) in the 1930s?

Have they opened the box yet?

Sounds like my local on a Sunday night

“Open the box”, “No, take the money”, etc.

Setter,

Your term “replica” is surely better substituted by the modern term “Full Size Model” (FSM).

Myself, I have very mixed feelings about originality:-

In an article by Air Cdre Allen Wheeler, then Aviation Trustee of the Shuttleworth Collection, about the rebuild of the SE.5a at Farnborough in Air Pictorial (c.1959) he wrote something like…

“The first thing we did was to replace all the wooden parts…”

This does nothing to detract from the pleasure I (and thousands of others) get from seeing her in the air.

On another tack some types can maintain/increase their monetary value the rarer they are. It could, perhaps, be that an owner would not want additional examples floating around because of a presumption of lessening the value of theirs.

What do you know about G-AFFD?

Whereas it was reported a couple of years ago that she had come to the East Midlands from the Isle of Man for further restoration work this appears to be incorrect – only some flying surfaces travelled to the mainland.

I don’t know the fate of G-AEYE but wouldn’t think she survives.

while the USAF personnel have no power to stop you unless you enter the base, they could call upon UK civilian or MoD Police to arrest you. You were lucky, and probably watched like a hawk – if you pointed that camera anywhere else you’d have had some flashing blue lights on your case pretty quick I should think. Your actions weren’t wise and no doubt made things worse for people wanting to take pics in future – a simple phone call or letter to the Croughton PAO would have got you permission to take the pics!

Thanks and agree a courtesy call would have helped but it was opportunist and not a planned visit.

Is there a law in the UK statute that makes what I did an offence???

There was a crate on the back of a lorry and a crane outside TFC’s hangar this morning…

Didn’t know there was an Ilushin Il 14 in the UK. LOL

Probably best to edit your post to NOT acknowledge the guys on the gate for letting you do this they may not thank you if someone in charge sees them if you know what I mean, I have inadvertantly done this myself once, Sorry to be a pain but the anal retentatives are out there waiting for opportunities….John P

It’s probably a topic previously covered but as I’m a newcomer hope you’ll forgive me for any duplication.

When stopping at RAF Croughton to photograph the F-100 and F-105 on the gate there a couple of years ago I sauntered up to tell the US guards on the gate of my intentions. They said I couldn’t, I said I thought I could, was going to and did.

I do not beleive I am breaking any law if, on a public highway in the UK, I take a photograph with my camera pointing towards a military base. Can anyone tell me I am wrong?

Roger Smith.

PS similar problems in the US saw me biting my tongue and sullenly skulking off, tail between legs – I was far less sure of my position.

Nice pics.

Dare I say I like cooling fans and hairdryers.

Question: is the IWM’s F-86A currently on display at Duxford?

The Bob Ogden books I referred to are:
“Aircraft Museums & Collections of the World” published by Bob Ogden Publications. Prices vary, 4 – 10 quid. Bob’s not on the web last time I looked, but have a hunt around.

You can write to Bob at 13, Western Avenue, Woodley, Berkshire, RG5 3BJ.
or telephone 0118 693276

I’m pretty sure he has most volumes available.

In Detroit the Henry Ford Museum has got a pretty decent aviation collection on display, they opened a new gallery in late 2003. Not much interest in the way of warbirds but some excellent vintage planes.

And don’t forget south of Detroit The Yankee Air Force at Willow Run Airport, Belleville who had that disastrous fire last year. Go and support them.

[
I visited here about three years ago. Well worth a visit with Spitfire, Stuka, 2/3 of a Boeing 727, Boeing B.40 mailplane (this is due to move out soon though?), Curtis Pusher, Curtis J1N, Brown B.1 racer, Coastguard HH-3 – plus U-505 (German u-boat).
Roger Smith.
Looked out my photos last night – delete Curtis Pusher ( and J1N was VERY difficult to photograph due to lighting)
