Mike – no worries – hope that helped!
Oxcart – sadly Doug hasnt written a book – though i keep on banging on at him to put something down! He is unique I think as he is the only person alive, as far as I know, who flew the Whirlwind fighter (on ops) AND the Hornet.
Fantastic bloke, will have a brandy with him on wednesday actually!
He did write up his memories of the Empire Air Day in ’38 when 19 got spits – turned out to involve a spy and all sorts!
Sadly, FP didnt fancy running it (fair enough) and Aeroplane have had it for over 3 years now (and been damned rude – they said they wanted to publish it but have had no contact with him for years, simply ignoring his calls and letters 😡 )
TT
Thats a crying shame, Texan- wish him all the best and buy him a drink for me- as long as you pay!!
Texan, has your friend had a book out, by any chance??
Most (all?) of the B-17’s used were scrapped after filming of ‘the war lover’ – nobody wanted them!
Thanks guys!!- i was thinking about the P-51 – i read somewhere that the Dallas Built ones had a slightly different shaped canopy to the Inglewood ones- i don’t suppose anyone bothers with THAT sort of detail though!!
In his autobiography, Chuck Yeager says he loved flying them – but he also mentions a contemporary song that some wag made up- i have no idea of the tune, but the lyrics went something like “Lord don’t give me a P-39, it’ll tumble and roll and dig a big hole- don’t give me a P-39!!-for what its worth, i don’t mind it – the fuse has a nice shape- apart from that intake on top
I’m certain nobody HERE could!! (all being aircraft enthusiasts!)- but somebody scrapped the last Hornet without batting an eyelid!!
could REALLY improve things there if they did though:diablo:
don’t know why the de Haviland museum can’t sell one of theirs, myself
The Typhoon is smaller and lighter, simple. Thrust vectoring can help, but it can’t win a battle against laws of newtonian physics, unless the F-22 can move at relativistic speeds… or higher
It doesn’t have to win against the “laws of Newtonian Physics” just outmanouvre the Typhoon! (for the purposes of this discussion) , and i’m sure sudden changes of pitch using its vectored thrust will help it in this regard.
And 2 more with Bob Hammer in Seattle i believe
from what i’ve seen the F-22 is EXTREMELY manouevrable- it does have vectored thust don’tforget!- i can’t see how it can lose against a Typhoon
Getting a job at Historic Flying!!
XB-70, B-58, Seafang, Spitfire 21, deHavilland Hornet, SR-71, A5M ‘Claude’, FW-190 and an F-104 please!
i know this is an old thread but does anyone have an update on the paul allen he111 project that is supposedly being restored in Norfolk? Is it being done by the same guys who are doing the fw190 and me 262?
Not much of an update i’m afraid- but i remember reading somewhere that Paul Allen is having the ‘2-111 restored to fly and with Junkers Jumo 211 engines
I couldn’t help noticing that Jerry Yeagen has a ‘Tony under restoration already!!- never seen THAT news in a magazine!
