An update as the plane was photographed and its gun – among other things – was brought to the surface by divers of the Hellenic Air Force. Half the starboard wing and the tip of the port wing are missing, as are the engine and the tail. Its landing gear is intact which means it made a smooth ditch and probably the missing parts were torn off when it was cought up in the fishing boat’s nets, since the marks are recent…
The guys at the HAF Museum are once again called to do their “magic”… 😉
Any chance of displaying those unmarked grey SE that were in transit from the Med to Iraq in the late 80’s? 😉
It’s a Dora
According to new information from Kyriakos “Kirk” Paloulian, it appears to be a Ju-87D-x and has a section of the nose and tail blown off, otherwise it appears to be in one piece.and probably will be raised. A team of Hellenic Air Force Museum specialists has been sent in order to asses the situation…
Sorry, no photo yet so depending on second hand guessing imho we cannot be certain of either the type or the condition of the plane…
So we are not supposed to have owr own gps, airliner jets, 5th gen fighters. How about television sets or pc’s, are we allowed to develop them, or we need also permission from uncle Sam? In a free market it seems that some countries wanna be more “free” than the others which is reminding of the way the WarPac functioned in political and economic ways… In a free democratic and capitalist world, after winning the cold war, we are supposed to have gotten rid of monopolies, right???
Surprisingly there are people who actually think that way… If it wasn’t scary it would be hilarious…
PS1 I suggest to the Under Secretary of the Air Force to bomb, in case of war, the factory that manufactured those terrible terrorist weapons situated in Everret WA, as well as arresting and executing those Federal Administration executives and military personel responsible for selling F-16 technology to China ( via Israel)…
PS2 Unfortunately Kubrik is dead so there is little chance for a Dr.Strangelove PartII, in the current context of events…
Using recent developments as a guideline is not blind, its the smart thing to do… As I wrote above this is a proposed upgrade for a possible sale… Listing capabilities that could be included in a possible upgrade is a practice inherent to arms sales and whether you like it or not, until a deal is signed and delivered, there is a significant difference…
SPEWS II was exactly about money since the 190 millions could NOT be exceeded as the contract with Thales mentioned and covered block 50’s only, not block30/40’s… Then Lockheed sent its engineers to study which block 40’s could receive a smaller and cheaper upgrade package that retained GAC instead of installing MMC, etc, so its pretty safe to be cautious since things seem to change rather easily depending on the financial situation…
Now IF Turkey buys Typhoons, 25-30 is not a number that makes sense… Either you go for more ( and essentially scrap the F-35) or you stick to CCIP and wait for the F-35. Berlusconi tried to make a sale with Turkey, but so far the THY Airbus deal seems closer than the Typhoon…
As to the ELTA EW suite, thank God it was not chosen… It was below specifications of the HAF and was advanced for political purposes only… ASPIS was also pushed by the US administration but at least the product was proven and it was logical to upgrade it… HAF Block 52+ are not naked and the second squadron is on its way to be evaluated for operational status…
When…
Well, this is a proposed upgrade for a possible sale, so until ink has been put to paper and we know all the details, it sounds more like a sales brochure. The Block 30’s were offered for sale without finding a buyer and earlier plans had left them out of a possible upgrade. Later other proposals came up with the latest having MMC for all blocks, when earlier proposals were considered the possibility of retaining the GAC for financial reasons, and so on… Taking into account the 145 combat helicopters program that is ongoing for years along with the financial problems of SPEWS for the THK Block 50’s, things are not certain even after the signing of contracts. Such news should be taken with a grain of salt imho, especially when at the same time there is talk for 25-30 Typhoons and 48 more T2020’s…
In any case the matter is interesting…
Well one wonders of Iran is a greater threat than Dr.Khan and his clients for example…
Arthur may remember a Greek M2K pilot that made an emergency landing on rail tracks in February 1991 and was later repaired…
The big deal is not the denial of entry, is sending your interceptors into an area for which another country has responsibility, instead of keeping to yours and overriding the ATC responsible for the flight, instead of cooperating with it through proper channels… Tecnhically speaking IDF/AF interceptors were “renegade” a/c also…
Cypriot protests after Israeli jets force airliner into flight control zone
LARNACA, Cyprus, Oct 5 (AFP) –
The Cypriot authorities issued a strong protest Tuesday after Israeli warplanes forced a German airliner into their flight control zone without prior authorization amid a bomb alert.
The foreign ministry summoned the Israeli ambassador over the action taken against the Tel Aviv-bound Lufthansa flight, the privately run Sigma television channel reported.
Public television said protests would also be filed with the international civil aviation authorities as well as the Israeli communications ministry.
“The plane was escorted by Israeli jets to some 60 nautical miles off the Larnaca coast before retreating,” complained Communications Minister Haris Thrasou.
“Israel would not allow the plane to land.”
The distance is outside Cypriot airspace but well within the Nicosia flight information region covered by control towers on the Mediterranean holiday island.
Six hours after the Boeing 747 touched down here at 3:08 pm (1208 GMT), the 331 passengers and 18 crew who had left Frankfurt at 10:10 am (0810 GMT) were still on the ground, AFP correspondents on the scene said.
Sniffer dogs had already searched both cockpit and cabin and given the all clear. Cargo was also unloaded and re-inspected.
In Berlin, a Lufthansa spokeswoman told AFP that the bomb alert had been discounted from the outset.
“We came to the conclusion with the German authorities that this alert was not serious. We wanted to fly through to Tel Aviv but the Israeli authorities forced us to land in Larnaca,” she said.
Cyprus Justice Minister Doros Theodorou said the aircraft had only been allowed to land at Larnaca without the normal clearance “for humanitarian reasons”.
Military sources in Jerusalem confirmed that the bomb scare aboard the airliner had prompted the air force to be put on “very high alert”.
The internet edition of Israel’s Haaretz newspaper said F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to escort the plane and keep it out of Israeli airspace.

It seems that the Nikeforos/Toros LIVEX cancellations came in the right moment…
In any case I have to agree with Arthur about the paranoia bit, a prank call is not reliable intelligence, and although it should be taken seriously until investigated, there are ROE and criteria to be met before a shoot down…
In any case it was a good chance for the IDF/AF to make “good publicity”, and it would be interesting if Syria wold take the diverted plane instead… 😉
The HAWKS were carried as a test and were not operational…
Well, terrosism is taking schoolchildren hostages and exploding the school. Terrorism is also an AH-64 shooting on apartment buildings or people in the street…
So instead of going into this discussion let’s just concentrate on the topic at hand, and whether these stories hold any grain of truth in them, or in the age of information PsyOps are more hard to distinguish…? 😮
Hi Distiller!
#attack the oil facilities in the sheikdoms all along the Persian Gulf (and the Caspian Sea)? With ballistic missiles (they have 300 or so Scuds) and their Su-24?

# attack the oil facilities in the sheikdoms all along the Persian Gulf (and the Caspian Sea)? With ballistic missiles (they have 300 or so Scuds) and their Su-24?
Possible and quite probable…
# close the sealanes (with FPBs, Mines, ASMs, …) in the Persian GulF and the Arabian Gulf?
Certainly
# invade Iraq and try to cut off the U.S. forces? They have 1200 MBTs and about 500.000 standing ground troops.
Good idea, the question is if Iran is already preparing for such a scenario, because if it has’nt, then it would be foolish to proceed just as an impulse and not with a carefully drawn plan.
# terror attacks all over the West? Possibly with unconventional B&C assets?
Not very likely, although others may jump at the opportunity.
# do nothing until “The Bomb” is ready and then – booom someplace, sometime?
How will they prepare the “bomb” if the facilities are bombed? Either they already have it or they have other facilities.
# Kofi Annan deeply worried?
LOL,certainly! He may also express his regret over such an action… :dev2:
#no more nuclear R&D in Persia? or more and faster?
Hmmm, probably the second…
# a big war in the middle east?
Very likely…
#revolution in Egypt and Pakistan?
Depends on the stance of their Goverments… Chances of success not very good imho…
# all muslimi in the West in c-camps? (for their own security of course)
Not very likely, we are talking millions here… In any case , we are supposed to be free Democratic tolerant societies, and not fascist/communist/nazi etc totalitarians, …….right????
# crude at USD150 a barrel? (hello electro-mobiles and horses!)
Oh YESSSSSSSS ( where’s my bicycle?)
# gold at USD800 an ounce? (cool! I’m gonna be real rich!)
Oh YESSSSSSS ( yes, I would like to buy some gold please…)
# uprise all over the Islamic world? From Western Sahara to Indonesia? (not really)
Since war will brake out, uprisings are peanuts…
Well in case that such a scenario comes true, I am sure that GW has given serious consideration in all these, and many many other possible outcomes, …right??? :diablo:
The photo appeared on the Greek newspaper Imerissia, although there is a larger version that shows the rest of the plane. As you can see half of the fin and 90+% of the rudder are gone…
Special thanks to George Psarras for the heads up…!!!
