Sorry Arthur, 53-5239 is an RT, that was a typo…
You mean 21218 or 21519? The confirmed ones as you correctly say are 18, although there are usually mentioned 20. The confusion with the 52xxx serials might also palyed a part here, although there seems to be an ex-Dutch example between them as well ( 54-1542 ex M-102?) I remember a formation photo of about 10-15 RT-33’s but I’ll have to look for it…
The RHAF RT-33A’s were used initially by 335 Mira from Eleusis and later by 348 Flight (Sminos) which operated from 1953 with 6 modified F-84-G’s before moving to Larissa in 1954 were it acquired 335’s Rt-33’s in 1955 and the RF-84F’s in 1956.
Yes Steve it comes from P.Anastasiou site, the guy that sent Scramble the PA unit badges. The list was put together in the last year or so IIRC, and it certainly is not complete and I have cross-checked it with some files of mine… Here are some additions I managed to find so far. Keep in mind that the RT-33’s were returned as soon as the RF-84F’s started to arrive and they were used along with F-84G’s that had cameras in their tip tanks…

Yes it is and the license plates look British… The car on the right is an Opel/Vauxhall Hybrid of some kind or maybe a Chevy…???
Hellas, (Greece), received the T-33A in 1951. About 400 of them, not all at once. Then in 52′ they began receiving the first of 250 F-84Gs, and so on and so on.

The very first “Daskala” (Teacher, s/n 50-434/TR-434 that landed along with 50-435/TR-435) photographed on September 21st 1951 at Eleusis ( via Michael Solanakis, http://koti.welho.com/msolanak ), it was part of the “Sminos Aeriothoumenon” ( Jet Flight). The first operational Jet of the then Royal Hellenic Air Force was the F-84G Thunderjets that replaced Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVI’s, flown by 337 Mira “Fantasma” on May 1952 from Larissa. 😀

(Kokkas, Stylianakis, Damaskos and Papadimitropoulos, the Acroteam “Aces Four”!!!)

…Arthur were are you?
Hey Big Mac, this thread is 4 years old. Many familiar names here that unfortunately don’t post here anymore…
😮
Does ACIG team have some kind of “collective opinion”? Smells like hard-core communism to me..
Smells like dozens of researchers worldwide compiling information that actually proves what hapenned instead of using decades old stereotypes and minimalistic generalities to support ones “reality”…
Alepou , this 337 Mira F-4E shot was taken from an Antena TV station report by Argyris Ntinopoulos from Kalolimnos island on January 30-31st 1996…
I’ll have to ask and see if I can get more details… BTW only the first one was published 😉 , the whole set comes from an inside source… 😀
Don’t you think the THK (and the EPA for that matter) realizes this? I don’t think they’d undertake a program as big as the Phantom 2020 (or the Peace Icarus 2000 in the case of the EPA) if they weren’t confident of the aircraft’s new capabilities post-upgrade.
Well, they did and the reasons for it were not entirely financial. The hard reality is that a 30 year old airframe, even if SLEPed & upgraded costs a LOT of money in maintenance. That is a FACT and the Phantoms in Greek service will most likely be retired sooner than scheduled because of this. First the non upgraded ones and then the PI2000, which were a gap filler solution anyway…
I don’t know what Turkey will do, although I suspect it won’t be much different…
Here is his wingman:
338 Mira birds mid-90’s…
The F-4 even upgraded needs a LOT of money to be maintained. If the F-35 is purchased by Turkey, it will not be on a 1-1 basis even for the THK F-16 fleet alone…
The EU angle mentioned by Distiller is correct. However money is still the biggest obstacle for any new fighter purchase…
PS
to replace more than 20 Turkish F-16s that have crashed because of various causes in the past 15 years.
In my count there are at least 21 and probably 22. Any of our forum spotters has more details on this…?
