    Great post Eric!

Regarding the discussion mentioned by Sabre Ace, I think he means Kurt Plummer’s post in the second page of this thread at the ACIG Forum:

“…It won’t be an “accident” if someday we have a MIDAIR
COLLISION in the Aegean with a blind greenhorn that the last thing on his mind is “training” and instead his objective is to violate every ROE regarding the 1000 feet Bubble, speed and altitude, in order to force us to make a fatal mistake…”

    27/01/2004 23:19:02

    ——————————————————————————–
Three formations of Turkish warplanes made an equal number of infringements of air traffic regulations in the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR) on Tuesday, press reports said.
The eight Turkish aircraft were recognised and intercepted by Greek warplanes, while in two cases the interception process developed into an engagement.
The reports said three of the Turkish aircraft were armed.

The Falcon on the fin identifies 330Mira/111SMET bird. From what I heard 346 Mira will start appearing soon with Jason on the fin :).

And as said before, “clean” fighters are found at delivery ceremonies, brochures and museums… 😀

The “Greek Sacred Regiment” ( Ieros Lochos) was part of SAS/SBS and took part in operations in the Aegean mostly by Caique, but also in paratroop operations, like the one in Samos on December 1943.

“…1 S.A.S consisted of 500 men of 1 SAS, 100 men of the Free French S.A.S Squadron, 55 men of the S.B.S, and the 114 men of the Greek Sacred Squadron. Greek Sacred Squadron was formed in August 1942 by officers of the Royal Hellenic Army who had escaped from Greece after the German invasion. This was the unit’s third incarnation: the first was the Theban Sacred Band that had helped free Greece of Spartan domination at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC; the second incarnation, the Sacred Battalion had served in the Greek War of Independence 1821-1829. The name of the unit came from the pledge of faithfulness that the Boetian lovers of the original Sacred Band made at Iolaus’ tomb. The Greek Sacred Squadron (or Regiment) had a tradition of refusing no task set it, and dying to the last man if necessary. It was rumoured that they expected 50% casualties in a raid and felt frustrated if they didn’t get them. Its motto was ‘Return Victorious or Dead’ – said to be the parting words by Spartan mothers to their sons, when they gave them the shield, when they departed for war. (“Either you shall bring the shield back as a victor, or they shall bring you dead upon it”). The Greek Sacred Squadron later worked with the S.B.S raiding the Aegean and Dodecanese Islands by caïque…”

The Greek Special Forces have fought from El Alamein ( Captain Karampetsos LRP discovered Rommel’s tank manoeuvre from the south ) to Ksar Rillan, Gabes and the liberation of Tunis , to the Aegean islands and later the Greek civil war.

Col Christodoulos Tsigantes , Founder and CO of the “Sacred Regiment” ( Ieros Lochos ) . A brilliant military mind and a close friend of General Leclerc , he persuaded him and Montgomerry to approve the formation of the Greek Special Forces and then sending them to the front line .

    Quiz threads!!!

IMHO these threads by Arthur and lately Distiller are by far the most interesting ones in this forum, so I propose to the Webmaster to make them more “official” by creating a special section were people would e mail their answers, provided of course that they ( Arthur and Distiller) agree with it. This could be also included in the AFM’s printed edition…

My hat is off to these guys who not only have a vast understanding of aviation matters but are willing to share it with others, and to all that answered or even bothered to look for an answer without making a post… Well done guys!!!

Well, as usual the matter of buying fighters is both political and financial. If Serbia gets its economy in a decent shape, then everything is possible. From leased F-16 coming from AMARC/Belgium/Israel to, bought with loans from French or British Banks, M2K’s or Grippens…

It remains to be seen if the Russians will make an affordable offer, probably of used and/or upgraded airframes…

    Did someone say IMF…? 😉
