There will be some good news for at least one of the Shacks in the months to come…
The link for the Greek page is given in the first page of this thread. HAF Museum people have been the previous week in Rhodes preparing for the salvage.
The HAF news release:
http://www.haf.gr/el/news/default.asp?id=378
mentions that on 9 Oct 1943, II/Stuka Geschwader based in Maritsa Airfield in Rhodes lost 9 Ju-87D-3/Trop. These were claimed by RN ships, while the RHN Destroyer “Miaoulis” claimed another 3 and USAAC P-38s also claimed 7 Stukas as shot down by Maj. William L. Leverette alone, while:”the leader of Leverette’s second element downed five Stukas, and his wingman got three“

The raised Stuka is probably S7+GM w/n100375, having as crew Lt. Rolf Metzger and Uffz. Hans Sopnemann.
Yes…but what about the “eight orgies”? No wonder the museum decided not to recover it. They obviously have more pressing matters to attend to….tough choice…hmm…lets see…recover this barnacle encrusted wreck…or eight orgies? Tough one!! Andy
Actually there are also other planes that have been found and are assesed to be raised. All these cannot be raised at once obviously, and the choices are indeed tough, despite of your irony… When you will learn about the next one to be raised you will understand this better…
Marine archaeology in Greece is a vast subject with thousands of ships and airplanes spanning in thousands of years, up to and including the mid 20th century, and as one can easily understand the emphasis is given to the former than to the later…
Also the HAF Museum is undergoing a major overhaul and this will be evident on St. Michael’s Day, November 8th, the day the Hellenic Air Force celebrates its patron saints…
Today the raising operation started:

Greek F-102s remained in service until 1977, most of its pilots loved it. It was a demanding plane however…
Now regarding its combat role in 1974, what we know for sure is that 2 Turkish F-102s crashed, whatever one claims…

Fantasma,
We are not that “naive” to beleive your arguments…Free passage for civilian maybe…what about military? does Greece will allow Turkish military to conduct exercises within Greek national space when ever she want? Dont say me YES…
Well, I have to say YES since you ignore the Greek position: If you apply correctly for requesting airspace or sea for military exercises, you have been ALWAYS given permission by Greece… ALWAYS… During the last years you have stopped to apply for permission, so obviously you will not be given something you haven;t asked for in writing…
OTOH what you do is issuew NOTAMS that you will conduct military exercises in terminal areas of airports in Greek islands, so no, there you will be intercepted and escorted out of the area…
I repeat that the UNCLOS provodes for EVERYTHING including military warships, a/c etc… Surprising isn’t it?
Beleg, I did not wait to be informed about the THK RF-4E from you, gimme a break please! I posted it one hour after the incident on the ACIG forum but some of your fellow Turks there questioned my “conspicuous sources”…
You are clueless and informed by the meadia exclusively… What a pitty… Try and reasearch first about the mission of the THK RF-4E and the 2 escorting F-16;s and then attempt to post…
It is a FACT that Turkey has rights under the UNCLOS that provide for EVERYTHING, and you still have the nerve to talk about “suffocation”??? Try getting a job as a writer in a soap opera, you have great talent at melodrama…
Beleg, either you are clueless or you lie on purpose… Turkey has rights to FREE PASSAGE and to MILITARY EXERCISES and to FISHING RIGHTS as per UNCLOS… EVERYTHING is provided for had you bothered to read it, and since I have mentioned this dozens of times, you and the rest of our Turkish freinds should already have the discency to accept the FACTS…
Regarding the “demilitarised islands” and other such nonsense, the status if the “demilitarised islands” was REVOKED by the PARIS 1947 treaty, when in the early 50’s Germany and Italy were REMILITARISED as well… Your cluelesness does not surpise me, but then again you sat out the entire WW2, so go figure…
Turkeyis afraid to go to the Hague since 35 years now, because she knows she has zero nil 0 nada legal arguments to support hers “case”, so she tries from time to time to create a mini crisis like yesterday and ask for “negociations”… Typical…
As for Sahin/Feridun/Tasdan/robust, the only “difference” in the Aegean is that Turkey does not accept the current status quo and uses its air force in a vainb attempt to change it… BTW the Turkish Goverment has published maps where Turkey claims to have SAR rights nit only in the high seas, but in Greek National Watres and ON Greek islands as well… What do you think of that my friend? Very …”friendly” indeed…
Yesterdays incident was coming for those of us who monitor developments closely…
3 years ago I wrote this:
As an unnamed Greek F-16 pilot said to me:
“…It won’t be an “accident” if someday we have a MIDAIR
COLLISION in the Aegean with a blind greenhorn that the last thing on his mind is “training” and instead his objective is to violate every ROE regarding the 1000 feet Bubble, speed and altitude, in order to force us to make a fatal mistake…”
The Hueys will be replaced gradually as the NH-90 enters service… They will not be upgraded as the Greek MoD found this was not going to save as much money as originally thought… Look for an second NH-90 order that will allow all the Hueys to be retired in the next 5 years…
Regarding the HAF Hueys, they will also be replaced very soon, probably sooner than the Army’s…
Negotiations with several countries, no names sorry… However already some have been earmarked as gate guards in several places, so its not likely that any sale will go ahead…
