It hasn’t hapenned yet, although there were some negotiations going on, so it does not seem very likely now…
Not exactly…
Greece is not blocking anyone, especially Turkey form her rights in international waters… you seem to ignore (on purpose or by ignorance) the fact that the UNCLOS provides for free passage, fishing rights, military exercises, etc etc, so the whole Turkish idea about the so called “closing the waters” and other similar melodramatic sentences, is null and void…
Stereotypes are a bad thing, as is hiding your true intentions behind “SAR exercises”…
If you are bored you can submit a flight plan, this can be done by radio also if you are short of ink and paper…
If I understand the Turkish position well, if a Greek Helicopter lifts off a Greek frigate inside Istanbul FIR, the THK will not intercept and Istanbul Control will not try to contact the unidentified blimp on their radar screens, right?
There were no upgrades, although several modifications took place. You will find F.1CG photos here
DJNik, the Psathoura range is just south of Chalkidiki, with lots of a-a exercises taking place there. Also you might catch a Canadair or 2 in transit, or even T-2’s!
From a Navy point of view, nothing much I’m afraid, unless you go to Thessaloniki until May 15th where you will catch the Standing NATO Response Force (NRF) Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2)… 😉
The EMB-145H Erieye program is behind schedule, due to delays in the electronics integration. There are clauses in the contract that provide for compensation, and since the matter is financial as well as operational, the progress is slow. However as proven by the M2000-5 case, the problem was not so much “electronic” but financial… It is excpected that by next year the system would be formally accepted…
The profiles are the work of my good friend George Psarras, I’m helping with the information gathering aspect…
Great profiles ContrailJJ!

ContrailJJ, great profile! Do you have a site on profiles?
What are you talking about? You can not claim superiority without knowing the facts. Firing a live missile in a peace time encounter between HAF and TuAF is as crazy as firing a real bullet on an innocent person in the street…In fact, there are hundreds of Greek Mirage-2000 six position HUD pictures taken by TuAF F-16s….But nobody fired a live missile to shoot them down…
Because no Greek M2k practised a simulated attack while flying directly above Turkish soil… The THK F-16D was actually flying to the limit and jinked 3 times before being shot down…
The ability of the Mirage 2000 is well known, choosing to underestimate it shows arrogance and ignorance…
Roger that Belbecos, I heard that too but no more info yet… I’ll let you know when I find out more details…
The news clearly states that the purchase of the 100 new generation fighters is related with the replacement of F4-TI 2020s and F-16 blk30s not the old and non modernised F-4Es who are at the end of their service life.. Both the TI2020s and F-16 blk30s have enough life in them to wait for the introduction of F-35 or EF2000-TIII which are both expected after 2015.
Beleg, from the above statement of yours what comes out is that the “old and non modernised F-4E’s” are not related to the purchase… Did I understand you correctly?
SOC, during the last year, there are several indications that Cyprus may have acquired an unspecified number of Gadflies, nothing confirmed yet though… 😉
@ Sahin/Feridun/Tasdan
Taking a forum post, posted by who knows who in order to generalise in such a gross manner, is completely typical and not very smart either… We are supposed to be grown-ups, please use an adult argument for a change…
One could argue that those who worship the Army whom they consider the basic pillar of their society, without which everything would disintegrate, are the ones who still live in the past… Especially when they are not doing much in order to comply with the obligations for reforms for which they have signed…
For those who comment on the disposition of forces, pleaze keep in mind two things, first that its the ground forces and especially the amphibious 4th Turkish Army which has as its mission to capture “enemy islands” when the only ones facing it are thousands of Greek ones and nothing else, and second that things in the air are very hot on almost a daily basis for over 30 years now. When fighter a/c from another country try to challenge your sovereignty and fly over your islands, it would be stupid not to take care of it…
Now since this is quickly turning political, I will not comment further, let’s stick to the fighters…
From what Beleg posted, I did not see any referrence to Block 30s or unmodernised F-4s at all… If you are speaking from other articles you may have read that are in Turkish, please elaborate. If however these 2 reports are your source, I do not see how you came to this conclusion… Logic says that the unmodernised F-4s will be the first to go, while I am not so sure about the B30s…
Taking into account similar Turkish purchase programs and their long history, I think its still early to be sure of anything, based on ambiguous press
reports…
Doesn’t matter what fighter Turkey buys. The real interesting part of this is whether we’ll see another attempt by the Greek Cypriots to import high-end Russian SAM systems :diablo:
Which ones did they get last? :diablo:
@ Z1ppo (and Beleg partially)
The F-4 is known to the Turkish since 1974 and the F-16 since 1987, now there will have to a) find personel wihdrawn probably from other units in order to train them to 2 completely new types that are not properly known even to their producers, establish 2 new technical support lines, 2 different crew training OCU’s, 2 different spare parts supply mechanisms in at least 2 Wings, etc etc… and b) Find money in order to buy 2 different new fighter types while at the same time having a significantly inflated price per unit since splitting an order like that is not your ticket for entrance in beancounter heaven…
I did not say “it won;t cope”, I said its not sensible to try and cope with both at the same time (practically) while with one you can save time, money, personnel and resources that in the end of the day will give you quicker and deeper operational advantages…
OTOH the key here is the time variable… The F-35 won’t be coming into service anytime soon, while the Eurofighter which can be available sooner, even not in the desired tranche III, will be able to provide quicker entry into operational service. And of course the ever present political behind the scenes maneuvring, which is the most desicibe factor in such deals, and not the operational requirements of the Air Force per se.
@ Distiller: Excellent post as usual, although I disagree with the “power projection” part #3, your Rafale arguments hit the mark!
Agreed. Turks don’t think about Greece most of the time, but unfortunately Greeks don’t realise that.
And how exactly did you reach this conclusion???
