The choice to buy both the Eurofighter and the F-35, is imho not a realistic one for financial and logistical support reasons…
The 2 photos of the HAF F-4E SRA’s flying low, were uploaded by myself last year, both here:
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=25731
and in the Acig website:
http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_365.shtml
One of them had appeared some years ago in the Greek magazine Ptisi, while the second was never seen before anywhere in public…
BTW the other photo with the turn, I’m not so sure if its real or not 😉
Yes Orko, I was speaking of 67-0272 which is mentioned in the beginning of the topic and which was delivered in 27 Jul 87 and obviously not on the Peace Diamond 1 & 2 Phantoms.
I am not sure, I read this
Built at Castle Bromwich. To 29 MU on 23rd June 1945, to 695 Sqn (later 34 Sqn) on July 11th. With 2 CAACU from August 20th 1951 until September 1st 1952, then instructional airframe 6709M and 7001M at Bicester. Taxied in ‘ The Battle of Britain’ film in 1968, then to 4 Sqn detachment of CFS at Kemble for restoration to flying condition, but work halted. To CFS Little Rissington on December 4th 1970, displayed on pylon. To Cranwell with CFS on April 20th 1976 then to Leeming in 1978. Exchanged for a P-47D and joined Doug Arnold’s Warbirds of GB collection in 1986, stored at Bitteswell. Registered G-SXVI on February 25th 1987, rebuilt by Trent Aero East Midlands, first flight on December 16th 1987. At Biggin Hill until 1990. To Evergreen Ventures of Oregon, USA as N356EV in January 1990, to 747 Inc of Oregon as N356TE March 1991. Note : The TE356 seems to had a short life with the RHAF.. We may assume it was early returned to RAF due to technical problems. http://imansolas.freeservers.com/Aces/Greeks%20in%20Spitfires.html
and since the serial is also found here:
http://koti.welho.com/msolanak/spitregist.html
I decided to try and find more information
Does anyone have info regarding TE356 (N356TE) and its service the the RHAF?
Isn’t there a Flight Simulation forum where this kind of posts belong?
AFAIK the F-4 is still the property of the US Goverment and special permission is needed if the THK is to give/sell it to anyone else. The F-16 is another matter however… Any info as to the location of the wrecks and to what actually hapenned?
Forget Russia, this will not happen for many reasons. Participation in European programs like FREMM is the way to go, however things are not that simple. There are short term needs (the result of decades of inconcistency and lack of long term planning) that need to be dealt with fast. The HN has now ONLY European main assets.
If we go to the Air Force forum we will talk there in more detail, now that KYSEA is scheduled to convene in a few days…
According to statements by the MoD in the Greek Parliament, only 2 Standard class Frigates will be modernised, and the money will go to the new Frigate programme. The French have offered Greece a place in the FREMM programme, so thinks look interesting for the HN…
Am looking for Skyblazers photos taken in Greece in the early ’50s. Anyone that might help please pm or e mail me.
TIA!
Nice photos!!!
BTW this was not the 1st Greek airshow…
…Contrary to common belief, during the 1950’s and 60’s Airshows were very common in Greece, featuring visits -among others- from the Skyblazers and the Blue Angels, while the 3 (then)RHAF Acroteams made shows in the Athens International Airport at Hellinikon with crowds of over 200.000 people in attendance. Airshows took place also in various Airbases in Greece and over Greek cities as well. On the same time they performed all over Europe becoming famous for their expert flying in Le Bourget or Spangdahlem for example…

The good news are that according to a decision by General Avlonitis, the CO of the HAF, 49-2622 “Poseidon/Neptune“, who flew with the Kyushu Gypsies during the Korean War as part of the 13th RHAF Flight, and which now still flies with the 355 Mira (Sq.) will keep flying as part of a -still to be founded- HAF Memorial Flight!!!
From J.Baugher’s site:

and later N15836 that was required by USAF in 1949.

PS last week the T-6D 49-2751 that was under restoration at the HAF Museum in Tatoi, was completed and is now displayed at the courtyard of the HAF Istorical Branch building at Palio Faliro… Excellent job as always, well done guys!!!

Greece to purchase 30 American F-16 aircraft for about 1.1 billion eurosGreece will purchase 30 F-16/Block 52 fighter aircraft in a direct deal with the United States government for about 1.1 billion euros (1.32 billion dollars), Greek Defense Minister Spilios Spiliotopoulos said.
Athens will also sign an option to obtain 10 more aircraft of the same type for operational needs as part of a four-year arms programme extending to 2010, the minister said following a meeting of the Greek state council of foreign affairs and defense (KYSEA).
The final cost of the contract will depend on the offer tendered by the US government, Spiliotopoulos said.
The Greek defense ministry will request the provision of maintenance support for the F-16 planes as part of the offset deal, he added.
In April, the government said it would reexamine a deal sealed by its socialist predecessors for the purchase of 60 Eurofighter aircraft from European consortium EADS at an estimated cost of 1.7 billion euros.
The state council will decide at a later meeting whether to buy a further 30 fighter planes, with an option for another 10, the minister said.
The F-16/Block 52 is the latest generation of the popular fighter, which first appeared in the 1980’s.
Spiliotopoulos and Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis both visited the United States earlier this year, respectively in April and May. At the time, the Greek press had reported that the government was examining proposals for F-16 planes.
The minister also announced on Tuesday the approval of a contract with the German government for 333 Leopard tanks.
Originally scheduled to order 170 Leopard 2A5-class tanks from Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), the Greek government modified the deal to include 183 Leopard 2A4’s and 150 Leopard 1A5’s for an additional 325 million euros (392 million dollars).
The renegotiated deal is to be signed soon, a defense ministry source told AFP.

This was the attrition order that was excpected, it does not rule out the Typhoon, on the contrary, many see it as the “share of the pie” that will go to the US for purposes of geopolitical balance, before ordering “European”…
Spook time!
Great photos Michael! Very good angles you got there…
Again a big “well done!” to George and his crew at 110 MSV for finishing the Spook “finart” in a very limited time period, in a time when the schedule for 348 Sq. was very demanding with one exercise after the other…

Michael do you have other close shots of the Spook?
