yup, just look at the cost of the IAF M2000 upgrades, and Taiwan maintenance issues…
The F-5E/F/RF-5E is still operational albeit the numbers now is around 8.
IMO the MRCA can either be deferred to the near future to wait for some of the new fighters to mature (incl. the gripen E/F). I do think the gripen is quite expensive for its size and IMO the only options price-wise to the gripen for now is a newbuild F-16 (which a lot of airforce now wont be buying as it appears to be a fashionably “dated” design compared to the “newish” gripen)
Ideally I would like to see RMAF to get additional 2ndhand low-houred legacy hornets to replace the MiG’s (i know that is near impossible, but i think the kuwaiti ones will be up in the market soon if the rafale/f-15 rumours are true), consolidate on just 3 types, the MKM, Legacy Hornets and Hawks. And the next fighter replacement would the hawks with Yak-130/M-349 types around 2020.
So is this the plane that was carried on an awkward angle on a trailer?
The question now is this going to be a future replacement of J-10 (while new variants of J-10 itself is still being developed), an export only model (quite unlikely), a carrier variant or just a tech demonstrator?
I found some sources that quoted around $30m for an Su-30MKI, but others as high as $70. Which is the more accurate figure?
Either way, I still think Brahmos is the way to go in terms of anti-shipping missile, even if it is land based launchers.
If the MKM’s are about $50Mil, then the MKI should be around that…
Hmm… Actually i’ve been browsing through this forum for about 6years now (!), but never did until now that a thread with such an interesting topic that i am moved to register and post!
As it is Durango has a very large and strong army for its size (8 brigades!). A it is it would be more than capable of making havoc of any force that lands onto Durango. But there is virtually no AD units at all in its rank. I would convert 1 of the armoured division into an air defence division with 2battalions of used rapiers from UK and 2 battalions of igla VSHORADS with djigit launcers on pickup trucks. 3 units of Vera-NG passive ESM tracking systems would be deployed around Durango as a complement to the radars as it cannot be destroyed by radar homing missiles. The single remaining armoured division would be upgraded with 100 used leo2’s equipping 2 battalions. 2 brigades worth of BTR-80 (400units) will be bought to replace BTR-60. Metis-M ATGM’s and RPG-7 would be added to the infantry units.
The air force and navy will have to be upgraded for it to become a strong deterence. An island nation with small navy and air force is an oddity. The MiG-23’s will be retired and replaced by 38 F-16A MLU’s. The F-16’s will be AMRAAM capable and equipped with Harpoons and Mk65 Quickstrike mines to counter enemy subs, surface ships and hovercrafts. 24 low hours L-39ZO from Libya will be bought and upgraded in Ukraine with HUD’s and glass displays along with the remaining 9 L-39’s. The L-39’s will be used in CAS/air defence/training/aggressor role. For basic training/COIN, 28 used PC-7 from UAE will be bought. UK donated 6 C-130’s to replace the old AN-26’s. 8 CN-235MPA with ASW suites and 4 CN-235-220 to replace the Shorts 330. For additional surveillance, 9 Sagem patroller UAV’s will be bought.
4 Sauro class SSK will give some deterence to the PRB kilo’s and tango’s. Surface ships will have mainly ASW role. 2 type 22 frigates will be transferred from the royal navy and will become Durango’s main surface warships. 8 Pohang class ASW corvettes will replace the Koni class frigates. Additional Osa-II FAC’s will be bought from Algeria. For EEZ patrol duties, 24 used ex south korean Camsuri PKM will be added as a complement to the castle class OPV’s
As you can see most of it are 2ndhand which IMO the fastest and most effective way of spending 2bil for all 3services…
