Anyone else here remember the exact same rumours and ideas for Hatfield? Philip Birtles heading an attempt to set up a heritage centre there, with help from the dHAMT. Remember Spielberg being really very interested in using the place as a permanent UK film studios? Remember consultations with the locality being largely ignored by Arlington and Welwyn Hatfield council? Remember promises from both to have a heritage centre there, as well as promising there would be no shops etc to help save the ailing Hatfield town centre.
I really hope Woodford is saved, but I just don’t see it. Money talks and property is the easiest way to it.
This is very good news!
I am sad to see yet another Mosquito leave UK shores, but she is going to good hands. I know this has been on the cards for a long time, but it says something when our Canadian friends fight tooth and nail to keep an aircraft built in the UK when ours slip away quietly.
I do hope that ‘959 doesn’t sacrifice all of her original woodwork in the aim to get her airworthy. I understand that it would be easier to just build a whole new airframe now that the capability is there, and of course she will need a whole new wing.
I wonder what will happen to the original wing/wings, they must be good for a static rebuild.
Anyway, I sound like a right old misery, I am genuinely chuffed to see another Mossie heading for the air. Maybe one will end up based in the UK permanently, I live in hope!
Not de Havilland Hornet by any chance, where’s DC when you need him!?
Mosquito RR299 was based at Chester. Still a sad loss.
Be nice, deHavillands were the best, cheeky AVRO! Nothing wrong with pride in your product even if you pinched it from someone else…;) My grandads last plane this, having started on Moths and Dragons in the thirties! My uncle was on the 146 also. DH/HS/BAe/AVRO, it went too young and should still be providing employment for someone, be they in Herts or Beds.
I feel the same way about Hatfield! It seems to be the curse of Aircraft Factorys. People will drone on endlessly about a grass strip that saw 6 months of use in World War Two and nothing for ground breaking Factorys! Never mind…
Very sad news. Many condolences to his family.
Cheers for the update Bruce. No, i don’t get over nearly as often as I would like, life gets in the way of my hobbies. Especially when your from ‘oop North’ as you always eloquently put it! Hope things are well with you!
Hi again Janie, the DH.88 replica formerly of the Galleria is now stored at the deHavilland Aircraft Heritage Centre. They, (we, I’m still a member there), now have two replicas, the one being restored is from an Australian TV movie and will be finished as Black Magic I believe but those plans may have changed. The Galleria one is tucked away but isnt of the highest quality its mostly ‘orrible styrofoam!
Janie! I thought you might be… wheres my inheritance?!!:diablo: Thanks for the link page01!
SoD? Charming, you must know my Mum… 😉
Good to see that BAe can still invest a tiny bit of time in the venerable 146… Agreed Janie, good to see the buildings preserved in some way however the Flight Test was preserved for its roof structure which I believe is quite rare and yet they put in false supporting beams etc. As I say, I really struggle to go back to Hatfield now and particularly avoid the former airfield. As for the recognition of what went before, the Galleria removed its replica Comet Racer, Ramada Jarvis are still keen to lose the model of the Racer. The Airfield pub has plenty of aviation but nothing from Hatfield, same goes for the Harrier pub (!). As for street names the (not so) locals wanted the main street to be Spitfire Way, thankfully now Mosquito Ave. The best part was the original name for the misspelt ‘Gypsy’ Moth Ave, Dragon Moth Ave! I had a small part in having it renamed and even then they just couldn’t spell it the DH way! Okay guys, rant over, many apologies. No untoward or or racist connotations intended in the ‘not so local’ comment, just that its by and large a student town now with very few aware of the old place and it’s achievements. Hey ho, carry on chaps…
Too right Warbirt, the Admin Block looks fantastic despite the new wedge but I dont like what they have done to the Flight Test Hangar at all, very little point in preserving a building when you take away all it was preserved for! Glad this thread has caught some intrest, keep them coming!
Unlucky scuba flyer, I really thik Hatfield lost it’s soul when that went. I dont think the deal to build there was entirely straight forward to say the very least… Anyway ancient history I suppose but sad when you think every airport in the south wants an extra runway now on site or not! I might be working in those nice art deco buildings next to you soon should all go to plan, considering the family history on that site its oddly befitting I should end up there too!
The Mossie is RR299, Chester built in 45 and to date the last flyer. Crashed Barton Manchester in 1996. She’s wearing her Mosquito Squadron movie colours.
Nice Trident pictures. This was Grandads least favourite aircraft because he worked on the very high up tailplane, “Up and down all bloody day!”, bless…
