Mustang VH-MFT at the QVAG fly-in at Watts Bridge 2006. Based at Caboolture airfield (about 15 minutes by Mustang to the East of Watts). This aircraft did LOTs of flights, so we heard the great sound of the Merlin over the weekend.

The RAAF 38 Sqn Carboui’s are very regular visitors to Watts Bridge, they do night landing practice there under full blackout conditions. Very impressive to be on the field on a moonless night and stand next to the runway and have them loom out of the dark and land in front of you. This photo also taken at the QVAG 2006 Watts Bridge Fly-in.

Russian aircraft a-plenty at the QVAG 2006 Watts Bridge fly-in. They are very impressive aircraft This YAK VH-KGU was a first of type for the fly-in. Maybe someone can remind me of the model.

A aircraft well-known to me, its mine! Tiger Moth VH-JRS formally A17-300 when it was in the RAAF. Photographed at the 2006 QVAG Watts Bridge Fly-in.

The Chippy, also at the same fly-in is VH-ZCX (RAF WD480). There were a number of DH Chipmunks at the fly-in.

The CAC Winjeel VH-IOX belongs to Bill McMonagle formally A85-438. Bill and his Winjeel have attended pretty much every QVAG Watts Bridge Fly-in.

This Twin Pioneer attended several QVAG Watts Bridge Fly-ins during the 90’s. It was one of a pair operated by a company at the Coolangatta Airport (Gold Coast, Queensland). Its rego is VH-EVB. I would be interested to find out where they ended up.

Not photographed at Watts Bridge, but at a private airstrip about 60 miles north and near a town called Gympie in Queensland. The photo was taken in the late 1970’s. The rego is VH-ACR and at the time it was owned by George Sutherland. I think it is now at Caboolture airfield (Queensland) and may being restored.

Gipsy Moth (DH60M) VH-ULP is based at Kilcoy Airfield, an airfield about 15 minutes flying time by Moth from Watts Bridge. VH-ULP and her owner Mal Shipton are regular visitors to Watts Bridge, This photo was taken May 2006. That was about the time Mal purchased the aircraft.

The building in the background is the Queensland Vintage Aeroplane Group Clubhouse.

Here is the Luton Minor belonging to Gary Button. Gary owns several Luton Minors in various states of repair. This one made it back into the air about a year or so ago. It looks great and is based at Watts Bridge

The Luton Minor VH-LUT was photographed at the QVAG Watts Bridge 2006 Fly-in.

Yes the DH-94 Moth Minor has nice lines. I have tracked down the rego of the one I put up in an earlier posting. It is VH-AGO. The photo was taken at the Watts Bridge 96 QVAG fly-in and at that time it was owned by Bill Machin and had been restored by Bathurst Aircraft Maintenance. It was based in Bathurst New South Wales. Once it had been registered VH-AGL and when in the RAAF it was A21-14

Below is a Auster Mk3 which as can be seen was once in the RAAF as A11-55. Once Again this photo was taken at one of the Watts Bridge Fly-ins in the middle 90’s.

Austers were once advertised as the ‘Steel Aeroplane’ in light of the tubular steel fuselage structure. In Australia, those szelling Austers had to compete against the all-metal Cessna’s that came onto the market in the 1950’s. The Auster was really an obsolete design and lost the contest.

The second photo is of another Mk3 This one VH-MHT formally A11-49 (Photo not taken at Watts Bridge).

Fate has a strange twist sometimes because now most of those early Cessnas have gone to the junk yard and quite a number of the Austers still remain.

This De Havillabd Moth Minor visited the Watts Bridge Fly-in in the late 90’s. I can’t remember the rego, maybe someone can help out.

Another one from Watts Bridge 2006, This time, Des Porter’s DH84 Dragon. The DH84 Dragon is a very familar aeroplane at th QVAG Fly-ins at Watts Bridge.

The second and third photographs are of it being restored at the Chalinor Bros establishment, Mothcair at Murwillumbah.

Here is one from the Watts Bridge Fly-in in 2006, This one Percival Gull 4 VH-UTP. The aircraft was rebuilt from a wreck by the Mothcair at Murwillumbah, New South Wales.

The Gull 6 is VH-CCM also the subject of a rebuild by Mothcair. Nick and Greg Chalinor, the owners of Mothcair are very respected people in the world of vintage aircraft restoration in Australia. They have restored many vintage aircraft ranging from Tiger Moths to Avro Cadets to DH Dragons and many in between.

This is the CAC Boomerang that was owned by Guideo Zuccoli. Photographed at the 1994 QVAG Watts Bridge Flyin.

Matt Denning designed and built a set of wings for this aeroplane, his own Boomerang (now flying) was then under rebuild along with another belonging to Greg Batts.

Have dived a few of those that did not make it back across the channel, out of the four that we looked at and this is over ten years back now a hawker typoon was the only one with any recognisable features, a fortress off beachy head was the last one, torn too shreds now and apart from a single engine nothing in situ though it ditched intact and the crew rowed ashore according to our guide, most of whats left laying around crumbles to dust if touched, Sea Water and airframes is not a good mixture.

I saw the remains of one of the aircraft that had been dumped of the Queensland coast. Caught in a trawler net and they bought it back. Made the TV coverage here. Extremely corroded and not a lot of use for any restoration. From memory I think it might have been a corsair.

The story I have heard here in Brisbane, Queensland is that carriers were tied up at Bretts Whalf and all sorts of stuff was loaded on them, they were taken out to the 30 fathom line and the stuff was pushed over and it was back to do it all over again.

More exciting is what was in the Archerfield (Queensland) hole, I saw oil tanks for mossies, undercarriage legs (badly corroded), 30cal and 50 cal machine guns. rubber seals in good condition. That was about 10 years ago, Most of the stuff was left there and the hole reflooded.

However, if you’re a student of rareties, try the cream and green biplane above the Drover pic. Gold Star to the UK reader who picks it!? 😎

    G’day 😉

I’ll give you a hint – its based at Caloundra S.E. Queensland Australia – it had a major rebuilt there. It hadn’t flown for years

and yes Glen has some magnificient photos. The next Watts Bridge fly-in is only about 8 weeks away and I am really looking forward to it.
